After sitting through a hot and humid 1st half of a boring 4th preseason game in Miami, I headed over to the local casino (Seminole Hard Rock) for some gaming action. The gaming sucked, but this post is more of an observation about the Top Dollar slot machine.

I was playing a standard three reel Top Dollar slot and was fortunate enough to hit several Top Dollar bonuses. As most of you know, you are given up to 4 offers of bonus credits and have the option to either "Take Offer" or "Try Again". Also, I believe that it is well known by now that the machine will suggest the "best play" after each offer down in the section that shows your credits in the machine.

Normally, I would follow the "best play" suggestion; however in this session, I decided to ignore the best play suggestion. I had four separate bonus rounds where the "best play" was to take the 3rd offer, usually somewhere around 40 credits, but I chose to try again and three of the four times ended up getting a better offer between 55 and 85 credits with one lower offer of 30 credits.

What have others experience been with the "best play" suggestion and whether you follow the suggestion or just go by your gut?

    I always follow the suggestion

The "best play" is indicating that the current offer is better than 50% of the total available offers...it does not compare the current offer to the next offer...

I am not a slot player but I always take a couple hundred bucks worth of shots on these. I would scoff at the suggestion box thinking that "of course they want me to do that because its a lesser offer...they don't want me to win"

I always follow the suggestion as well. If I ignore it and go for greed, 9 times out of 10 at least, I made the wrong decision.

The lady next to me went for greed twice before I told her to watch where it tells her what to do. She was very thankful for the info. She had never noticed it before.

I was playing a $100 Top Dollar at TI and the first 3 offers were either 10 or 15 credits. I thought, "How can it get any worse?"

Final offer: 5 credits. The slot attendant said she had never seen one that low before.

Then the machine adds insult to injury when it taunts you with "oh boy, you're a winner!"

I have had the 5 credits before. I think it just says "wow". Yeah wow, you just got screwed.

For me, I will mostly keep any offer of 40 credits or more, unless it's the very first offer, then I go for broke.

The offer of 5 credits had never happened to me before until this trip.

On the flip side of the coin, I did see a guy play the $500 machine at Mirage and the first offer was 1,000 credits and the game was over. He subsequently lost it all in a period of 4 hours.

Amazing to get that offer and totally stupid to play it al back. He got the best the slot would give so maybe he should have tried another?

Winning the $500k didn't seem to excite him that much... Since that was his reaction, losing it was probably no sweat off his back.

I would've pulled a Dave Chappelle and yelled, "I'm rich b*****!" then wire $495k home and just flat bet $25 a hand blackjack just to annoy the casino.

I wouldn't wire anything home, but I would totally flat-bet the $25 blackjack...after they agreed to upgrade my accommodations and provide some F+B ;)

+1. I'd just do it because they (Mirage) destroyed me on my last trip but gave me a lousy comp offer.

That hurts me just to think about that. Hope I NEVER get hooked like that. Sad he didn't get to enjoy it. The ONLY way to beat them is to pocket the win and do not spend!

I ignore the best bet advice. However, i'm usually on the wrong side of that. Once at the B, I had a third offer of 45 credits on a $25 game (5 lines though) and it said take the offer. I ignored it and on the last offer it hit $25,000.

Wow, I am a HUGE Top Dollar fan and never have seen any suggestions but then again I never thought to look for it.

I have played enough Top Dollar to tell you that 30, 35, 40 credit range is the most common regardless of the denomination.
If 3 out of 4 times you are getting offers between 55 and 85 then I would not have left that machine for a while because those are generally above average payouts.

I posted a Trip report with a number of Top Dollar bonus videos and if its 45 or more credits I would take it.

I wanted to kick the machine... but I'm sure Phil Ruffin would have had me arrested.
