So last week, I was playing BJ at the Fremont. It was mid-morning at a 3 dollar table. It was pretty quiet. TYpically at a table like this...there was me(pretty normal) and a couple others...one was pretty loaded and waving a cigarette around like a fly rod, the other just looking to play, shyly. A big guy comes and sits at 3rd base...says I'm tired of playing alone over there. So we play for a while...new guy making 10 dollar bets. So the drunk takes a couple EXTRA hits against a dealer 3. Dealer ends up with 20 ........We all lose and the big guy starts in an what a dumb play that was, to the drunk ...and doesn't let it go.....goes on and on. THe drunk says...I'll play my hand you play yours.....just doing my best. Finally new guy says...I'm going back over there, where people know how to play and goes away muttering to himself.
    Guys like that deserve themselves!!!

Perfect comment!!! At least he had the sense to leave... as we all know, there are those that stay and attempt to impose their shit view of the world on the table. They take annoying to a higher plane.

I wonder if it occurred to him, that's WHY he was playing alone.

You know what push the guy of his stool and keep playing. Understanding that one play has no outcome on the next will keep you leeps forward of anyone else!

I had a guy go crazy on me at the Mirage. I hit a hard 12 against the dealers 3 upcard(the proper play on most cheat cards I've seen). He started yelling and I started laughing at him. He lost $75 on the hand(hard 18 ). I won my hand.

The dealer and rest of the table tried to tell him that taking a hit on a 12 with a 3 up for the dealer was the proper play but he would hear none of it. Just kept yelling and I just kept laughing. I told him to stick around because when that hand came up again I was going to hit it again.

He had no chips left so he just left muttering to himself.

I've found that the best way to explain this to people is to suggest to them that I can "take" the 10 from the dealer that may bust him, I may take the 10 from the dealer that turns his 3-up into a 20/21 (7 or 8 in the hole), I may take the 7 or 8 from him, preventing a 20/21, or I may take the 7 or 8 that would have have given him a hard-16.
If they're semi-bright, they'll point out that there are more ten-cards than those other cards.
Then, I usually hit them right back with the rest of the math:
"How many cards bust a hard 13?" A- "uh, five?"
"How many cards give the dealer a 17 through 21? from his hard 13?" A- "umm, 8?"
    "That's correct. Any questions?

This thread's title is "There's always one!" I'd be thrilled if that were the case; but unfortunately, like roaches, where there's one, there're others! There's no point trying to explain anything to these ignoramuses; after all, there are still people who think the earth is flat, the moon landings were an elaborate hoax, and so on. Maybe that explains why so many former BJ players I know have switched to VP.

It's people like this that push me, and especially my girlfriend, away sometimes. I'm a low roller and look for the min bet tables as low as possible, around $5 bets. I know of the play card but sometimes like to take my chances, sometimes playing for each bet rather than the long run. I find this exciting to take a chance every once in awhile. And my girlfriend doesn't really know of the play card at all. She usually asks the dealers or myself for help. Usually the dealers are more than willing to help with great attitude, which helps her and all of us have fun.

Well, sadly, there are people who hate how we play, the people who take everything so seriously rather than playing for the fun of it, as if this was their job. We try to avoid these people like the plague. Another reason why we love to play downtown rather than on the Strip.

Careful with that one. There are exactly five cards that give the dealer a 17 through 21. The 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. The ace, 2, or 3 doesn't bust the dealer, but they are required to draw again to a worse hand.

My only point when hitting complainers with math is that their assumption of my hitting my hard 12 against the dealer 3 being a "taking the dealer's bust card", is a false one. The 9-thru-K busts him - five cards. There are 8 cards that do NOT bust him. Those 8 also do not bust my 12.
It is a fallacy to assume ahead of time that the next card is always a 9 or 10-value card - especially when one considers that the actual odds are 8:5 against it.

Now - a good count on a two-deck game my very well lead a player to stand on that hard 12. I've done it myself. I'm assuming here that we're discussing a neutral game or no counting.

I only ever do this (bringing up math) with people I know or with players who are bitching at me for hitting my 12 vs the dealer 2 or 3.

Now, going the other way, when I have hard 15 or 16 against a dealer 7-10, I hit. That's because the odds of the dealer making a hand are better than 50-50. They can have the 10 in the hole, but they can also have (with their 7) an A/2/3/4 in the hole... 8:5 that he has a hand or will likely make one.
    Dealer 8? 8:5. Dealer 9? 8:5. Dealer 10? 7:5 (no ace in play).

Very few people have ever complained to me about hitting my 16...but it has happened.

In any event, I always try to point out that any other player's decision has the same chance of helping the dealer as it does hurting him.
It's foolish to worry about the play of others... unless you know them and you're friends...then, you may want to help them make the better play.
Otherwise, let their own play make or break them.
