Just going over the folio for last week's stay in the desert. I had NO idea when I booked that there'd be a $40 per day city TOT and a $6 per day city BID tax. Greedy nefarious bastards.

I was cool with the $5 resort fee that was obviously disclosed before we formally booked.

What the hell happened to America?!?

P.S. And there obviously needs to be a law that I check my subject lines before hitting send. Duh.

Yeah for sure tourists are often bent over a barrel. We do not vote in local elections so we get it good. Often to pay for pet projects (Soldier field hotel tax anyone?).

I am amazed that in Phoenix it is almost 2xs as much to rent a car there at airport vs neighborhood locations in taxes.

What are we gonna do not travel?

Sure does feel like this some times though!

I actually literally paid a leaving town tax once in the Dominican Republic, before I left the country there is a $20 "exit fee".

Many countries have exit fees. And why not? As for local BID or TOT charges on visitors, I'm all for it. Maybe not quite the 20+/- percent of the latter that is fairly prevalent, but why not overall? On the rapacious level, it's a captive audience that can't really say no other than by not showing up. And visitors do impact local services. Perhaps there's no exact nexus between exaction and demands, but then you just go back to the rapacious column.

When we go to Portland we often take MAX downtown and rent rather than at PDX, it can be that much less expensive.

Yeah this summer I got a good deal at airport for 2 week rental but in the past we had people pick us up and go to the local Avis or Budget to get our car.

I remember a cash only place... maybe that was when I was in Bahamas?

And the wise bird says ... do your research, people. Since we all know there are so many ways to get $$$$ from us, savvy researchers have an advantage.

Yep - it's getting brutal. Just paid $39 in fees in San Francisco for a room per night.

But, then again, if we can afford the trip...

    Pretty much....

Though it sucks to pay extra on top of what you used to pay for no extra services....

Because we're just gold carders whose combined play equal a platinum we get compted rooms in AC all the time but pay the $27.50 tax and resort fee. I balance that against the amount of play we would need to get Diamond status so it doesnt hurt too much.

One does have to admit that what you see oft times is not what you get with hotel room charges. You think you're getting a great rate, but with the various fees the rate is doubled if not tripled. Hey- what a great rate- only $25 per night? Add the various charges and it's $75 a night. Not so great anymore! As Ken said- "read the fine print!!!!!" Bottom line: as long as people pay the fees, they will continue to be charged. Right now all we have is bitching and moaning- but not enough concrete action to stop the fees from being assessed. I have a feeling the only direction they're going is up.

A few have totally missed the point here. I mean, lump government exactions into "fees" if that makes you feel good, but that's not really the gig. Getting all "don't tread on me" machismo with discretionary fees -- how has that worked out so far? -- is not going to move the needle on the City of PopularVacationPlace, which gives not a rip what you think about the TOT or related tax.

Well, when it comes down to it, we'll vote with our wallets on whether or not we support these taxes/fees. To do so we need upfront information on processes and costs. The industry, of course, is hesitant to be transparent. For example, the airline industry is lobbying hard to reverse current tax/fee disclosure regs. What we need are more regs for full disclosure on taxes/fees for hotel and amenity services.

When was this? I have been to Jamaica 12 times and never paid such a fee? I have heard crazy stories from back in the day before they remodeled and expanded the airport though of wild west like scenes getting in and out of country.
