I used to go to The Western all the time before hitting Fremont street for the evening. Are there any good replacements for the Western? Old, rundown, a bit gross, cheap games, interesting clientele?

Actually, Jerry's Nugget is probably a little too nice to fall into the OP's category of "Old, rundown, a bit gross".

Nothing could ever replace the Western.
You can search forever, and will never be satisfied.

or the Ambassador East, or the Ogden House, or...;)

Stayed at The Downtowner a year ago, had rundown, gross and interesting elements, but was a half block walk from gaming at the ElCortez...

Aztec Inn is the kind of place where giving a $1.00 tip for your drinks makes you a high roller.

Not in the Fremont zone, but the 5th Ave pub and Huntridge Liquors, both on Charleston, are the kinda places where as soon as you walk in, they know you're not a local. And i bet even locals get that vibe...;) No supercheap deals, but great dive bars.
