    My Trip Report

Howdy sports fans. I wasn't going to do a report since most of this trip was solo (some business, mainly pleasure), and I especially hate to do a report in the midst of such great live threads from Packer, Bronco, Ms.BJ, etc, but if I don't pound this out now, details will get sketchy and fish stories will develop, like me splitting 2's 14 times or whatever. This could get a bit wordy. Apologies in advance.

Even though I've been to Vegas 40+ times, I did a lot of pre-trip planning this time to maximize my time and offers- thanks to all for the detailed reports and such that allowed me to do so. Special thanks to Trig and UK Fan for advice on beer and shows. More on that to follow.

I flew out on SWA out of KC on 9/14 and had booked two nights at Venetian (comped, 9/14 and 9/15) and I double booked Palms for 9/15 and 9/16 to take them up on two free nights plus $200 in free play. The only 'musts' I had this trip was to get to Crab Corner, play lots of double deck BJ and finally hit a 4OAK at video poker. The Quad Queen (or King), I am not...

Much like an AA meeting, I feel I have to come clean. My name is Dave, and I dabble at VP, and I've never had a Quad. As I told Trig in reply to one of his great threads, I've been dealt a .25 Royal at the Luxor many moons ago, but in my years of playing ($20 here, $100 there), I've truly never gotten a Quad, 4OAK....whatever you want to call it. I play VP on my phone and they are rare for me there, yet I read many reports with multiple Quad's per hour....starting to really take it personally, so I was hell bent to change that this time.

I get my car from Enterprise and set a course to the Venetian. I pull up and I'm rather ticked I had to change hotels this trip. The first two nights were comped as I mentioned, but the 3rd night, which I also had an offer to be comped, couldn't be accommodated and they wanted $1,000 for the room. Crazy. I checked back a bit later and the rate was down to $500 and when I checked in the best they could offer was $399. It was a business expense, but I just couldn't do it. In hindsight, it was a good decision on my part.

Being a fantasy football (and football in genreral) 'expert', I got to the V around 3:45 and ran to the sportsbook to place a wager on the Falcons / Eagles MNF tilt. Got there just in time (bags in hand like a degen). I should have flushed the $100 down the toilet. Would have been easier and probably more fun...at least I could have watched it go down the drain and think "I just flushed away $100" and tell a good story about it later. Instead, I had to wait 3 hours to tear up the ticket to make it official. Good start.

After I finally got to the room (losing ticket firmly in hand), I went back down to satisfy the DDBJ pit in my stomach. Turns out it must have been an ulcer since I couldn't hit anything. Lost a quick $500 and didn't so much as get a drink. So I moved tables and found another $50 table and lost that $500 just as fast. Down $1,100 and I haven't found the bathroom yet. Clearly I needed some food so I got my car and I went to Crab Corner for their crab cake platter, crab soup and boardwalk fries (knocked it down with a few Rolling Rocks). Excellent food as always. 4.5 stars for food and service. No pics because....I'm an idiot.

Drove back to the V after dinner and found a co-worker and his family (in for vacation) at the Bourbon Room and proceeded to spend several hours (and $250 in drinks) listening to awesome 80's music. Not wiling to call it a night after $250 in drinks and $1,100 in losses, I had to stay up and lose another $1,500 to make the night official. I didn't try any VP and lost it all playing more BJ. I literally fell asleep at 4:20 local time (according to fit bit) and woke up 2 hours and 29 minutes later at 'early' to get my day started. I don't sleep much as it is, but even for me that's a bit extreme. Seems like a good place to stop day 1. Day 2 to follow....over 23,000 steps taken, and possibly, a giant leap for mankind???

Day 2 started early- didn't want to sleep the day away, but certainly wanted more than 2.5 hours sleep. I was up though, so coffee and more coffee was in store. I went down to the BJ pit and I almost hate showing up again as the same crew that wiped me out is still on duty. But I'm not there to not play, so I buy in and settle in for some decent play, but break even for my time. I needed / wanted to get out of the V/P so I set sail for the Mirage and played some over there, again breaking even. It was rather dead, so I took off up the strip again to Bellagio. I found a decent shoe game and actually won a couple hundy and had a nice time in the process. I really wanted to make it to Aria and play, but my compass pointed me back toward V/P to try to earn the comps and keep the offers coming. As I was leaving Bellagio I headed out toward the strip through their shops and I had to use the restroom (weird I'd tell you that, but there's a point). Years ago....when I first starting coming to Vegas (like early 2000's), I had a decent hit (for me) at Bellagio, and I was so excited, I called my Dad from the bank of payphones back near the restroom. Yeah, before we all had smartphones attached to our hips and ears, we used these things.... and I'll be damned, they're still there. I won hundreds of dollars (at the time a huge deal) and all I can remember is my Dad telling me not to blow it... and we had a good, quick chat. I can't do that anymore since we lost him 3 years ago, so it brought back a neat memory. Had to take a pic and smile. 064.jpg

So I head back to Venetian, intent on going to the pool, playing a lot more BJ and enjoying my solo day. The weather started to turn and it actually rained and got cloudy and was in general, a pretty crappy afternoon for a few hours at least. So, scrap the pool idea.....play more BJ. And that I did!! Except, I continued to lose here, losing my winnings, plus a few hundy more. At this point, I'm bored with the Venetian. I'm not winning. It's crowded. Palazzo is dead (this place seems hollow to me, anyone else feel the same??). I make an executive decision to pack up and have the rest of my stay at the Palms. So I head upstairs to change and decide I want to grab dinner at the Wynn buffet (solo). Before that, a few pics of my room, which as always, is very nice 060.jpg 063.jpg

I make my way through the Venetian, through the Palazzo (still dead) out and over to the Wynn. On the walkway there were several panhandlers, which of course we all see, but several here had dogs. Hate that. I'm a complete sucker for a dog. Once when I lived in Chicago I got off my exit and I saw a homeless guy with a dog...he looked like hell. Drove home got all my leftovers, stole most of Bailey's (dog) food and went back down to give the guy and dog a bit of walking money and food. Sad I'd probably never do that for a solo homeless traveler, but point being....dog. I didn't do anything on the walk over, but it bothered me seeing these dogs just kinda laying there, clearly hot, clearly not eating what they should, clearly tired...hate that. So of course, after seeing someone asking for pennies, I walk into a multi-billion dollar enterprise and proceeded to hand over $43.00 so I can eat the finest meats and cheeses in the land, and I rather enjoyed that experience. I started slow with salads and stuff... 080.jpg

Then I went for some substance... 081.jpg

Then for some indulgence (Opelio crabs...wonder if I saw any of these crabs on the Deadliest Catch?? 087.jpg

Then, finally, some sugar! 088.jpg .

All very good and great service. Very pleased I went here and took my time enjoying the food from around the world. Such a great place 079.jpg

As I walked out, this gal was walking by the buffet just as I was leaving. It's hard to see in the pic, but her butt...I mean, that thing was good (in the words of Ron Burgundy). It made Kim Kardashian's butt look flat. I'm sad I know who that is or that baby's got back, but hey...it's the world we live in. Anyway, trust me, it was a fine booty 082.jpg 083.jpg

So I followed (stalked) the booty for a while and ended up eventually leaving, back up the escalator and over the bridge to Venetian. Along the way one person was left with their dog, so I stopped and gave her $5 and chatted for a few minutes about nothing and wished her well. Karma, plus, the dog...made me feel better.

I headed up to the room to pack. I had had enough of the Venetian and the Palms was calling my name. A change of scenery would do me good...

That's interesting because I think I had my first Royal (not dealt) before ever getting a quad. I had a Royal with 1 coin in about the first time I ever played VP. I thought 'well, now this isn't so hard...'.

P.S. thank you for the booty.

No wonder I walked over 23,000 steps this day. Back up to the room to throw stuff into my bag (including a bottle of bubbly I received from the V for my birthday) and back down to get my car to drive to the Palms. I dropped things in my room and decided to use MyVegas points to go see KA. At only 40,000 coins (or whatever), it's a pretty good deal. I've not seen this show yet and I thought it was a good way to kill a few hours. I didn't really want to drive and navigate MGM, so I texted my cabbie buddy @LVCabChronicles on twitter to come pick me up.
(Soapbox moment: do yourselves a favor and follow this guy. He's a talented writer who just happens to drive a cab in a city we all love. The things he sees and is able to translate to the interweb is incredible. His blog, back in the day was gold. Still is but he's taken to 140 characters at a time now. He's punctual to a fault, funny, and someone I'm glad to call a friend. Look him up when in town. If he can't help you, he will get someone that can. Don't wait in a cab line...just get in touch, ok??)....end of rant.

So where was I? I texted him and he said he was about 15 minutes out. Just enough time to try my first go at some video poker. Since I've never gotten a Quad on any single line VP, I thought I'd try some multi-line---you know, be disappointed more times and spend more money doing it. What could go wrong? I found a 3 line and 5 line machine and stuck a $20 in and was intent on playing 5 lines. I spun, but the first spin only cost me $3.75...wtf??? Dumb me didn't hit the right button and I was playing 3 lines and got nada for it. I could have continued, but for some reason I had 5 in my mind, so I switched over. What happened two spins later is a thing of beauty. 085.jpg And the after pic.... 086.jpg

Just like the dealt Royal Flush, I was dealt Quad's on a multi-line payout and the .25 level. Holy cats!! It wasn't a premium hand, but I finally lost my virginity in a big way. I basically had a Quad orgy for my first Quad experience. Only thing better is if this happened at the Quad, but that would be asking too much. So having won $300 on a $20, I'm now convinced that $5 donation for the poor dog back near the Wynn set me straight. That, or it was just time I finally hit something this trip.

True to his word, Cabbie showed up right on time around 8:15. I jumped in a little heavier in the wallet and off to see the 9:00 showing of KA.....

YES!!! Happy ending indeed! When you were dealt the Quad snowmen, did you hear angels sing?

Good thing you switched to 5-play...you would have kicked yourself if you had stayed at a measly 3-play for your first Quad hit. Cheers and keep the party going!

I get to the MGM and followed the yellow brick road (see what I did there....anyone?) back to the Box Office to get my ticket. Turns out I'm a bit early. The show isn't until 9:30, so I've got an hour or so to kill. Hmmmm....what could I possibly do in this huge gambling hall filled with booze, money, food, etc...I took a stab at some free bet blackjack. Bought in for my winnings at the Palms ($300) and proceeded to play that down to $100 pretty quickly, as the cards just weren't coming my way. Don't know what it is about this game, but the freebet doubles are ok, but any time I double with my own money (say I have a soft 16 vs. a dealer 6 and the house wouldn't double for you), I always lose the hand. Every. Single. Time. It's the right play, but it just wasn't going my way. I ordered a beer and that seemed to set me straight for a bit and I clawed back for a massive $35 profit. I still had time before the show, so now that I'm a Quad veteran, I set out to find another multi-line game, and wouldn't you know, MGM had a few to choose from!! Yay me!

I plunked down a crisp american $20 dollar bill and set out with low expectations, knowing a dealt Quad is rare. Two minutes in I got dealt 4 to a straight flush and struck out all around. A minute later, the heavens opened up, angels were singing and women were throwing themselves at me (none of those statements are actually true, except in my mind) and this happened. Forgive the terrible picture, I think I was in shock.... 090.jpg

I didn't even take the after pic or get the amount won. I mean, this Quad thing is pretty easy apparently. Playing single line has been a waste of time for years. I just needed to be playing 5 line and apparently you put $20 in and you get dealt Quads. What an idiot I am! So I'm pretty impressed with myself and I've got a few minutes to kill so I continue onward and then I get this... 091.jpg

What's that? A 3rd Quad in less than an hour? You bet it is. Now up another $500, I have to rush to the show or stay on this hot machine....I decide to cash out and go see the show, solo. Very glad I went. The stage is amazing and the cast....holy shit some of the stunts they do, you just sit there and think 'don't fall, don't fall' and hold your breath. At least I did. To pay $100 to see this show would be worth it for me. The fact I got it for free made it that much better....and as someone would say on this board....savvy! (Totally stealing that word from Flusher this one time....after all, I had 3 Quad's to my name now, so seems appropriate). Anyway, I found it amusing there was one guy to my right that kept taking pics and videos during the show. Security asked him numerous times to stop. I was hoping at one point they'd just take his phone and throw it into the fire like they demonstrate at the beginning, but they remained patient with this idiot. Much more than I would have.

After the show, I had to see if 'my' machine was still hot. It was open, so I threw $100 in there (stepping up my game, clearly) and a few minutes in I got this: 092.jpg Not dealt Quads, but I guess I'll take it (getting cocky now)

    Then this 093.jpg

And one more for good measure 094.jpg

The last one was at the stroke of midnight, and it was time to start heading back toward the Palms. I really wanted to get to Aria, but it was getting late and 2.5 hours of sleep the night before was starting to get to me. I walked over to MC and called my cabbie buddy and he was there in no time to take me to the home base. I can't lie...I put another $100 in the VP machines and didn't hit anything of substance (machine must have been broken), so I went to bed, having recouped about $1,500 of my losses the day prior. Tomorrow would be a mix of business and pleasure- my last full day in town. The Quad hunt would continue.

Wednesday saw me meeting with one of my employees for a good part of the day, making calls and such. We get out and about and do that and finish up around 3pm...we're not going to meet for dinner at the Cosmo (where he's staying) until 7. So I hit the DBL deck tables and find an awesome dealer... and for the life of me I can't remember her name (Sonja?). Quiet at first but we start a decent rapport (which I love), but I'm not doing all that well. In all my years of going to the Palms, I had never played at her table. Come to find out she's been there for 14 years and has seen all the changes (not for the better), but she's survived. Her hubby (also Asian, as she is) is under employed and together they have 3 kids...sounds like a great family. I like when dealers open up and talk and ask about my life away from the tables too. As a single dad, it's fun to brag about the kids and how we manage, just the 3 of us. Nice convo and a few beverages to boot. Beats a sharp poke in the eye any day.

I buy in for $700 (2 black) and I'm down to $400 pretty quickly, so I start to play two spots, $50 each and that turned the tide. I slowly increase my bets and start to get some 'black out' calls while betting often for the dealer. For the majority of the time it's just me and the dealer, which I like. After about an hour, my stacks are up to about $1200, so a nice little turnaround from where I was. We just start the next shoe and two guys sit to my left, one with a coupon for a free $150 play. You can't cut in mid shoe here, so they had to wait, which I hate (I just don't like to make others wait), but as I said that, I got on a run and couldn't really lose. At the end of this shoe, I'm now up over $2500 in my stack. The boys buy in and the guy with the coupon did well. He got dealt a 16 vs. a dealer face card, and he took a card and got his 5 for the $150 win. He played two more hands and left and soon after the other guy busted out. I started to lose a bit of my stack, so I decided to cash out at $2,200, even though I was having a great time. Of course my first chip porn of the trip and I failed to take a pic. Two yellow and two black....picture it....there....chip porn!

Interesting side note: Pit boss was hanging around (she was kinda hot)...she and the dealer were laughing (in a good way) about my manners at the table and called me the 'most polite' double deck player ever. I thought it was funny. I usually play two hands, so you look at your first hand and either tuck, swipe or turn over for a double (or BJ) and I place the cards neatly no matter what, even when I bust. Then I look at the 2nd hand and do the same routine. I hate when folks throw the cards or get mad and cards scatter. So it's just what I do. I appreciated the comment and took it as a sign to take the convo further, so I asked the pit boss out and she then laughed at me and shot me down (ok....I appreciated the comment and that was it, but that's how it would have likely played out had I gone that route)....

Anyway...I donked $200 off chasing my new found love (Quads), so I called it an afternoon and went upstairs to prep for dinner (showered and manscaped) and I called Cabbie to Drive Mr. Daisy around again. Once again he gave me a timeline and looking to revisit the magic that was the night prior, I instead had to sit down with my favorite dealer / pit boss combo, now freshly showered and spritzed, with the high karate smell thick in the air. In the immortal words of my man Ron B...."I looked good"...(that was some shower, apparently....)

There was an asian player to my right (I was at 3rd) and my intent was to play one quick shoe before my chariot arrived. Started with $300, playing two hands of $50 each. First hand I got a 20 and drew to a 19 on the 2nd. Dealer had a J showing but ended busting. Interestingly, the other player had a 12 and opted to stay. I thought it was a mistake, so I carried on upping my bet on both spots. Dealer once again shows a face card, and luckily I got two 20's. Dealer had 17 and once again, other player tucked a card he 'should' have hit (a 13). So idiot me, I pull back to one spot, $25 so this guy doesn't screw me over (which is poor thinking on my part). I don't remember the hands, but I won. Then I won again and finally upped my bet, won again. Upped it, won again, etc. In one double deck shoe, I didn't lose a hand. Started with $300 and walked with over $1200...I'm now within earshot of being even! What an incredible shoe. The only thing I do recall is the last hand, I had $150 out there, and I bet $25 for the dealer. I get a great double hand, so out goes another $175 and of course I won it....nice 'black out' for the dealer and a great way to end my one shoe session. I ran to the cage to cash out and Cabbie texted me that he was there. Once again no pics of the chips, so please visualize a yellow and two blacks and you'll get the idea.

Off to dinner...one more installment to go. If you've come this far....thanks!!

Where was I? So I didn't lose a hand and cashed out and dashed down to the Cosmo. Grabbed a drink and decided on Blue Ribbon for dinner. Always amazing. We had edamame, soup, Blue Crab Roll, Spicy Lobster roll, Cod, and their famous chicken. All amazing. 103.jpg Here's a shot of the rolls. No favorite here. Both great.

After dinner we waddled around a bit and headed toward Bellagio. It was a bit windy, so lots of disappointed onlookers for the fountain show that never happened. We walked around a bit and as my buddy went to use the restroom I threw $100 into a 5 play machine. He got back about $50 in and I wasn't hitting anything, so I cashed out. We got separated as I was looking for a machine to cash my ticket. I couldn't find a machine, so I just stuck the ticket back into another VP game... and glad I did...my first Quad Aces....no kicker, but I went from losing $50 to winning 104.jpg a few hundy on the .50 level. Cashed out quickly and proceeded down to CP.

We grabbed a drink at Ramsey's Pub and Grill...they truly know their libations there. This guy was making up a drink on the spot based on his customers' pallet profile. I think that means he can charge more for the drink...not sure. Was a nice guy though, as were all the bartenders. 105.jpg Interesting place though. We're sitting at the bar, watching tv and they made last call at 11:00pm and turned off all the tv's and basically closed up shop. There were still a bunch of folks in the bar- found that move peculiar. It was time we parted ways, so cabbie came to pick me up at CP and my buddy headed back to Cosmo.

I got back to the Palms and played a bit more VP and hit these before bed. The first two are minutes apart and the last one happened about 2 hours later. I donked off some cash at blackjack in between. 106.jpg 107.jpg 108.jpg I went to bed at way-too-late thirty, but only had to get up and pack and leave for the airport for a 2:00pm flight.

So I stumbled around in the morning and when I heard housekeeping, I showed her my unopened bottle of bubbly from the Venetian and asked if she wouldn't mind taking it home, and she was quite appreciative of the offer. Glad someone could use it!! I headed downstairs to play a bit more before leaving and hit one final Quad at the Palms 109.jpg

I then sat down at BJ intent to play as long as I could regardless of the outcome- buy in was my good luck figure of $700. Right off the bat, I wasn't feeling it. The pit boss and surrounding dealers were chatting and I felt like I was intruding, or that I wasn't in on the joke. It was a weird vibe. The dealer was kind of a quiet guy without much charisma...but what do I care as long as he's giving me more money than I'm giving him? Then, something weird happened. I described my table manners and how I'm pretty meticulous about how I play. I always do that, so it's now a habit. With all the banter going on in the pit, I got distracted for a second, and when I looked at my first hand I tucked it, as I thought I had a 20 and then I picked up my other hand, which was a 14 (8&6). The dealer had a 5 showing, but for some reason I just wasn't sure I had a 20 on my first hand, so after tucking my 2nd, and not taking any action on it, I simply looked at my first hand, quickly, and put it back under my bet. Didn't do anything....didn't make me change my mind...just simply confirming my cards- literally the only time I did it the entire 4 days. Of course, dealer has to say, in kind of a shitty way, that I'm not allowed to look at the cards once I move on to my next hand. I get it...I get the rule. If I was doing this repeatedly, or if I was being anything but nice, I could see saying something to me. Just the way he said it pissed me off. I told him I know the rules and told him my intent and why I did it and he continued to argue with me about it. At that point, I quit and cashed out, down $250 for that session, which left me down $900 for the trip. Not the best way to end things, but it's clear I wasn't going to get past being pissed and this guy wasn't going to give in, so best I just leave. I grabbed some chronic tacos in the back and grabbed my car and long hauled myself to the airport.

Once there I had to play $20 in WOF and got nothing....threw a final tally at some VP and got this... at the airport! 110.jpg

Uneventful flight home and now back into the football, gymnastics, homework, work routine which I wouldn't trade for anything. Thanks to all for reading and thanks to those that provide reports, insight and knowledge...it's a real pleasure keeping up on this board.

040.jpg Me and my gang at the Mizzou game after I got back. It was HOT!

The losses are always bad....but I don't think any of it can compare to the garbage Connecticut and Mizzou collectively put on that field SAT.

The Mizzou pic was from the previous weeks game, which wasn't a lot better. But you're right, that Mizzou / UConn game was horrible. The only thing that made it any good was this guy picking UConn +21 prior to leaving. That was my only good sports bet of the weekend, because Ravens, Tampa, Ohio St etc....ouch!

Yeah Mizzou really shit the bed last game. Lucky to win. And it seems to me that Mizzou underperforms vs. weaker opponents a lot, so I would definitely taken UConn with the points too.

And great TR! Glad to see you finally got a quad! But your first two being dealt? That's pretty rare!

Altogether, I would estimate a dealt royal coming before any quad followed by two dealt quads to be roughly 1 in 150k in single line, and even rarer since you played multiline!

And good you see you got some premium quads too, the bread and butter for making a DDB win. Get a dealt premium quad or another royal next time on multiline!
