Who do you think the most interesting people in Vegas are? I'm referring to notable people, not the nutty buskers, prostitutes, casino cheats or the hosts/pit bosses/bartenders who have seen it all. I'm talking people who we may have heard of (or can find on Wikipedia perhaps).

People like Steve Wynn, Oscar Goodman or Doyle Brunson (is he a local?). Local celebrities, directly tied to Vegas (not just an investor or visiting performer) - someone still alive - that has an interesting story and has contributed to the history, culture, success and popularity of Las Vegas in some way.

If you had to put 5-10 people on a ballot (with the above criteria) for some award for being awesome Vegas-ites (Vegas-inians? Vega-nens?), who would they be? Bonus points for more obscure names. The more colorful the better.

    I guess mine would be:
    Steve Wynn
    Oscar & Carolyn Goodman
    Tony Hsieh
    Penn & Teller
    Wayne Newton
    Fertitta Bros
    Derek Stevens
    Anthony Marnell III
    Michael Gaughan
    Bill Boyd

    Who ya got?

You mentioned "someone still alive", then I know none.

Gustav Mauler. Sure he's not native, but not many are, and he's been there long enough now to qualify. Nice guy. Great chef. Key role in bringing food to Vegas from his years with Steve Wynn.

    Agassi and Graf.

Doyle Brunson definitely. He's seen it all over the past 50 years in Vegas, and made a lot of money in the process. He had run ins with the most notorious mobsters and was friends with Benny Binion himself. His biography The Godfather of Poker is a pretty interesting read.

It's a shame that he doesn't participate in the World Series of Poker anymore. He was one of the original players.

My NASCAR fan buddies would want Kurt and Kyle Busch's names, on the ballot at least...

This would just about be it, being that there are so many restrictions on who we can name.

Several of the folks mentioned above have passed away.

How about Gary Loveman, a PhD from MIT, former Harvard Professor who recently stepped down as a CEO of Caesars. He developed the Total Rewards customer loyalty program and oversaw the growth of his company through acquisition, it's transition to a private company through a leveraged buyout, and back to a public company. Then the shell game of splitting the company into 3 or 4 companies based on healthy or sick properties in an attempt to shield good assets in the Bankruptcy.
