    My Trip Report

The Drunk Dealhound returns to Sin City

Hello fellow Alcoholics, Degenerate Gamblers and Vegas thrill seekers,
I just returned from a trip to Sin City and thought I would share some tales of my drunken deal hunting adventure. First, I’ll give you a little backstory about your myself. I am a Vegas addict and longtime member of the travel2vegas message board. I used to go to Vegas 3 or 4 times a year and was a very active poster on lasvegasmessageboard.com. I had kids about 8 years ago and my trips to Vegas slowed down to about once a year, and I have kinda disappeared from the message board. Last year 2013 was the first year I did not get to Vegas at least once, in a long long time. So, anyway… I couldn’t let that happen again, so this year I made sure to book trip number 46 for me and number 28 for my beautiful bride. Now, if you enjoy my report and want to read of my past Vegas adventures, you can simply search rugbysteve and many of my past trips are magically stored in memory.

My strategy for Vegas is to get all the free drinks, fun, gambling and stupidity at the least cost possible. I want to get all the fun and pay for almost none of it. Vegas is the perfect city for this type of deal seeking! I started my search over a year ago by playing My Vegas on Facebook. Thanks to playing that free game I got a free Saturday night at Mandalay Bay, 2 free show tickets to Zumanity at NYNY and two free buffets at Bellagio. Not bad, my wife also received an offer in the mail for two free nights at the Cosmopolitan. Sweet.. Free nights are always nice. I had also signed up for the Harrah’s credit card which included two free passes to the “buffet of buffet” passes at Harrah’s. Sounds like we are ready to begin…..

After dropping off our kids at my Dad’s house, we flew out of Logan Airport on Saturday morning July 19, 2014. I should mention that I have a secret parking spot that allows me to park for free, saving the $30/daily parking fee at Logan (the first deal of the trip). We connected thru Chicago and landed in Sin City about 6:00pm. I had rented a car with Thrifty (after getting the advice on finding the cheapest deal on T2V) $80 total for 4 days.. pretty sweet. We picked up our car and headed straight to Lee’s discount liquors, about a mile south of Mandalay Bay on the strip. This is a great spot to stock up for the trip as the store charges regular local prices (not Vegas strip liquor store prices). My 1.75 of Captain Morgan’s was only $19.99 and my 20 pack of Coors light was like $11. I also grabbed a few 20 ounce bottles of coke and ginger ale to mix with and we headed to the Mandalay Bay check in.

    Day 1 - Mandalay Bay

Many people use the $20 trick at check in, I have used it as well (see my previous trip report at the Bellagio)… but I often just use the “be friendly, courteous and smile” trick… this got us a free upgrade to a suite in “the Hotel” which is currently being renamed the “Delano”. It was a pretty nice suite, we had two rooms, two bathrooms and a decent strip view. We quickly mixed some drinks and changed into our saturday night going out on the town clothes. After powering down a few drinks in the room, I mixed a fairly large rum and coke in the liter coke bottle to provide lubrication during our walk up the strip. We took the tram to excalibur and then meandered up to the Mirage… My wife had a my vegas voucher for sushi at the Mirage but we just missed the closing time. Oh well, she stopped to use the ladies room and I was feeling pretty good from consuming the drinks in the room and the entire bottle of rum&coke.. so I decided to pull out $10 and play a hand of roulette at the $10 minimum table. Now, I never play roulette, the house edge is too big for it to be a game I generally play…. But I also follow a Good vibe/Good Chi type of enlightenment and when I feel a really good vibe about a dealer or game… I go with the vibe.. So anyway… I felt a good vibe (maybe it was the booze) get $10 in one dollar chips … and load up around the 11 and the 8 and a few other numbers in that part of the board and sure enough .. 11 hits !!!! … nice… they push several large stacks of chips my way…. I bet again and win a little more…. I bet one more time and win a very small amount… by this time my wife has arrived and I loudly tell her how good I am at Roulette.. “Watch, i’ll show you” I drunkenly tell her … well, of course I hit the eleven again !!! … I decided to color up and I get $150 in chips from my $10 buy in. Sweet !!! that’s a nice start to our adventure.

We decide to cross the street and hit Casino Royal.. our favorite spot for low limit gaming on the Strip. We get the free fun books, use the two for $1 michelob coupons to quench our considerable thirst and sit down to play $5 switch Blackjack. This is a great game, and I have been playing it more and more as it allows for a lot of play and the house edge is reasonable. We play for about two hours and consume numerous free drinks from the friendly casino cocktail waitress. Finally the wife suggests we get something to eat, as the salad at the Chicago airport was the last time we ate anything. We cashed in $228 from a $80 buy in… nice a $148 profit. This is the way you want to start a Vegas trip. We split a subway sub and a hot dog ($9 total) from the back of casino royal (using coupons from their fun book) and decide we should start to stumble back. As always we grab a couple of $1 michelobs for the road and start back. We wander down the new Linq area and poke our heads into a few places… I like the vibe… what a great improvement to that section of the strip… by the time we got to the ferris wheel, the booze and time change had caught up to us, so we jumped in a cab and returned to Mandalay Bay.

    Day 2 - The Cosmopolitan
    http://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/images/attach/jpg.gif

Sunday morning we awoke about 8:30am (still on east coast time) and went down to the pool. Mandalay has that great wave pool and pretty good lazy river… we enjoyed them both until about 10:30 and returned to the room to check out. As we were leaving the elevator I remembered that Mandalay offers the win cards. These are always a good deal and one of my favorite ways to beat the casino. Basically you buy $30 in chips, but it only cost you $20. You just have to gamble the chips until you lose them. Sweet … so carrying our luggage and my “box of booze” .. we get the deal, get the chips and each play $30 a hand BJ until we lost a hand …. thankfully the luck was still with us as we turned that $40 buy in into.. $120. This trip is working out good so far. I should mention that Mandalay charged us a $25 resort fee with a $3 tax on that … so a total of $28 to stay saturday night in a suite… really that is a fantastic deal !!!

We get in our rental car and head to the Paris Casino. I had signed up for the Harrah’s Credit card a few months earlier, and one of the perks is two free “Buffet of Buffet” passes. This allows two people to go to any of the 7 Harrah’s buffets (Rio, PH, Paris, Harrah’s, Flamingo, and Ceasars) as often as we want in a 24 hour period. We started with the Paris Lunch Buffet. It was a pretty good buffet, we did get to cut the line because the credit card sign up also gave me “platinum” status for a year.. which is nice. They had pre split alaskan King crab legs and I tried to eat a ridiculous amount of them… I would say I was pretty happy with my effort. After waddling away from the buffet, we went and checked in at the Cosmopolitan.
    http://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/images/attach/jpg.gif
We have only been to the Cosmopolitan one other time and it was two years ago… we both did their promotion, lose $100 in a slot machine and get the $100 back in slot play. For some reason my wife got an offer in the mail for two free nights. ( I did not get the offer) and strangely, this offer arrived two years after playing there?… Hey, I don’t need a lot of answers.. I love free rooms. Now normally my wife and I pay up and stay at the Wynn, because well.. we love the rooms and the pool …. but the Wynn was going to be $350 for two nights and the Cosmo was offering them for free. After checking in, we got the 61st floor in the East tower (the one right on the strip). We went up to our room and were blown away .. what a great room !!! We had three tv’s, a very modern open plan with bathroom, living room and bedroom split by half walls and an amazing outdoor terrace that was just awesome to step out on and absorb Vegas Vibe !!! Seriously, one of the best rooms ever in my 46 trips to Vegas !!!!!

We got changed, mixed a pair of captain and cokes in the coke bottle and went to the pool. Now the Cosmo has the “day club” pool marquee and the regular pool.. we chose the regular … the pool has a nice vibe and we enjoyed sunning, swimming and consuming our bottles of “coca-cola” poured over free cups of ice… This pool overlooks the strip and has a very relaxed vibe, just the way we like it. Captain and cokes at the bar are $14 each plus tax…. yikes… always a good idea to bring your own.

We got changed and went to dinner across the street at Planet Hollywood. The buffets had many choices (yes I did have another mother load of crab legs) and we filled ourselves beyond a reasonable level. We then started to wonder down towards New York New York. We had comped tickets to the 10:00 show of Zumanity thanks to the My Vegas game. We stopped at the Monte Carlo and used a free beer flight at the pub (another my Vegas game reward). You got four 5 ounce beers from their selection of over 150. The beers were good, the flight was $15 for one with the 2nd one free… still kinda pricey in my world but we enjoyed them. We did have a My Vegas voucher for the Ice Bar .. this is a total scam and should be avoided … the voucher got us into the ice bar.. but if we wanted shots they were $10 each with a two minimum… well…. staying in a freezing cold room drinking shots may be an attraction to some people, but we live in Massachusetts… you can stand outside in the freezing cold all winter long and drink if you want. We decided to pass on using that reward.

    Zumanity

We got seats in row c for Zumanity, three rows from the stage… pretty good seats considering they were free.. thanks again My Vegas! This show is very different from other Cirque shows… it is about exploring sex and sexuality … with plenty of “absinthe” like humor thrown in. Before the show even starts, some of the performers are performing and interacting in the audience… Two very large girls with very large racks got on either side of me and smooshed their very large breasts into my face and the back of my head while pretending to hug each other… it wasn’t so bad…… later in the show, they came out to the audience and pulled my wife up onto the stage. They pulled out another guy and had my wife and the guy simulate these goofy walks and dances… they then had the guy sit and had my wife straddle him and simulate.. well, you get the picture…. it was pretty funny.. the crowd was loving it and my wife was a good sport… She returned to her seat 10 minutes later and was rewarded with a free picture of her dancing on stage after the show. I would say that you should see “O” or “Love” .. first but after you have seen some of the other Cirque shows.. they you may want to consider Zumanity for a laugh. After the show, we strolled back to the Cosmo.. we played a little 5 cent video poker and got a couple of free Mojitos to take up to the room and enjoy the view from our balcony.

Day 3 - The Coupon Run

We got our of bed around 9am and went across the street for the Paris breakfast buffet. Again, we got to cut the line and sit in the VIP section, enjoy free mimosas and stuff ourselves on the many offerings at the Paris Buffet. Next we jumped in the car to start our annual “Coupon Run”. This is a great part about Vegas for me. Many casinos offer some type of free play or matchplay to get you into the casino. We try and go from casino to casino and take advantage of as many offers as possible. It helps to have the American Casino guide, a book available online for about $12 that includes many of these gambling offers. I bought 2 books, cut out all the coupons I thought I might use and carry them in an envolope in my pocket with printed My Vegas rewards and list all the deals on the outside of the envelope, so I can easily check what place offers what deal. These coupons offer either free play on the slots or matchplay on the table games. If you go and just play the offers, you are virtually assured to have a profitable run. I keep a pen and piece of paper to record the net outcome of each place, so I can have a net won/lost total at the end. Of course this is Vegas, and detours and changes are all allowed and factored into the master plan.

    http://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/images/attach/jpg.gif

We drive to Ellis Island and play the coupon that gives us $10 in free play after we play $10 each in their machine, we also each had a $5 matchplay (you bet $5 and if you win they pay you $10). We netted a $15 win and drove to the Riviera. We had $10 match plays here and I had traded with someone on the T2V board so I had 4 total. Now as we were approaching the tables… this loud drunk 30 year oldish guy was screaming like crazy at the craps table. He had three friends with him, but he was the only person playing at the entire table. I immediately liked the vibe he was creating, so I bought in for $20 and jumped on the pass line. This guy was great… he had no idea how to play, he bet $5 on the pass and $5 on the field… He threw a 7 (great a winner for me and him on the pass line) and was high giving all his friends like he has won hundreds .. of course he has lost the field bet, so he had just broken even.. but anyway… he proceeds to roll five 7’s in a row….. making me $5 each time and cheering like he is the greatest player ever… the pit crew was not too happy with him, and at one point came and made him change out the dice because they had left the table in his hand… anyway .. he establishes the nine as the point and a few rolls later he hits it. When he was done I walked away with a $65 profit. We then each played our $10 match plays at BJ and lost them and ended up leaving the Riviera with a $25 profit.
We walked across the street and got the Circus Circus Win Cards… Here you can buy $30 worth of chips and they give you $45 of chips that must be played until you lose. The vibe was very bad and we decided to just play them and get out of there ASAP. We went back and forth a little.. finally leaving the Circus Circus $16 ahead.

    Downtown Vegashttp://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/images/attach/jpg.gif

We jumped back in the car and drove downtown. We started at the Plaza where we each had $5 in free play. We recored a $7 profit and headed out the door. Our next stop was the La Bayou Casino. This is a classic stop for us, no not for the free beads and immediate free drink when you walk in… but for the yard glass of frozen booze you can buy at the back of the place. It costs about $20 and it well worth it. The real secret if you want to turn your day up to eleven is to request an extra shot of ever clear (grain alcohol) .. for $4 extra… it turns the trip up fast… Drinking this has been coined… “riding the grain train” … and we of course bought our ticket and started our ride. We won $35 at the four Queens, again buying the win cards and playing some Blackjack switch. Next we got our free pic at the Horseshoe… an annual event and probably my 25th time getting a pic down there… We then went to the D… with the best vouchers of the run.. we each had a $25 Matchplay and a “push on 22” coupon that allowed us to push our bet if we busted at 22 for up to a $25 bet. Well…. the luck finally ran out…. we both had $25 bets and both had 20’s on the table… (I had doubled down on a ten and turned it into a 20) things were looking great .. until the dealer made 21 on a 5 card draw….. dammm… we limped out of the D with a $75 loss…. our first of the trip….. ohh well… time to hit the El Cortez .. they give you $10 in free slot play every year as long as you have the ACG coupon. We played our free play and cashed out a tiny $2 profit .. yes its small… but I always like to record a win. From there we traveled to the Downtown Grand… now at this point we have consumed the grain yard drink and are pretty close to invincible… we play the free deal there and record a $46 win… as I am waiting for my wife to use the ladies room… I get a good vibe in front of a vacant $25 Baccarat table. Maybe it was the grain, but whatever I threw down $25 and got my green chip…. Now Bacarrat it a pretty simple game.. you with pick player or bank … it really is that easy… I threw my $25 on bank … and you guessed it… Banker won…. now I had to pay a $1.25 commission (when you bet and win on bank) so… I paid that,, tipped the guy the extra .75 and added that $23 to my win total. It’s always nice to have a wallet busting with bills in Sin City. As we left the Grand in a drunken state we ended up outside the Hogs and Heifers Saloon…. Clearly we were in the right state of mind to enter this Bar. This place is great if you want drunk entertainment and you are drunk yourself…. it turns out you can scream F&%K You to the Bartender after any question and its considered ok …. which was good, cause that was about the state I was in. We did some shots with the bartender and then we did some more…. The bartender has a bull horn and entertains the crowd with it. Well, I was wearing my favorite Patriots hawaiian style shirt and the bartender was apparently not a Patriots fan. Let’s face it… most teams hate us cause we always kiss their a$$ .. oops did I just type that or just think it…. anyway she is getting the bar worked up that I need to get rid of it and buy a Hogs And Hefers T shirt from the gift shop… well… after getting the crowd to cheer that I should .. I reached back.. pulled the shirt over my head.. threw it at the bartender and strutted shirtless (not a pretty sight) across the bar and into the gift shop. Well… $22 is kinda a lot for a T shirt… but I had kinda sealed my fate at that point… and well… I kinda like my new shirt.. it brings back good memories. After getting worked over for several shots, beers and a new T shirt .. we stumbled out of there and headed back to Freemont. We decided we better eat before we got any worse off. I had a buy one get one free to Hash house a Go Go.. So we stumbled there …. good thing it was pretty empty because my wife and I had a rather drunk and spirited debate about … well… never mind.. but I’m sure the Hash House was not sorry to see us go….. We then broke even with match plays at the Las Vegas club and ended out night at the Golden Gate. We each got our free girls of golden gate calendars… my wife didn’t really want hers.. but I made her get it for my buddy… Again, while waiting for her from the bathroom.. I got the Vibe in front of an empty craps table.. I bought in for $40.. rolled the dice and cashed out ahead $53 …. this seems to easy …. it was absolutely time for us to go home. Back at the Cosmo, in the elevator, the doors were about to shut .. an arm stops them.. and in the elevator steps Gus Hansen .. poker pro that you have probably seen on TV. I immediately called him out shook his hand and had my brush with celebrity greatness for the 30 seconds it took to get to his floor. I’m sure he was pretty excited about getting to meet me as well.

    Day 4 Finishing the job

We woke up and quickly went to the pool, after requesting a late checkout of noon. We checked out, threw the stuff in the car and walked next door to the Bellagio where I had two free Lunch Buffets. This is one of the top buffets in Vegas and we really enjoyed it. I had brought two baileys nip bottles and we each had a nice bailey’s and coffee…. no I did not have any crab legs. This is one of the best rewards on the My Vegas game. We then grabbed the rental car and went to the Tropicana. They have a deal going where they reimburse your slot loss, 50% the day of the loss and the other 50% 30 days later and up to a year from that date. We each lost 40, or 80 total and got back 40 in slot play. I also lost a $10 matchplay. At the end, we lost $70 at the trop.. but we do have $40 in free play if we can get back there in the next year. We then went next door to Hooters… they give you $10 in free slot play and a $5 matchplay… we made $12 and jumped in the car and returned downtown. We had to get some trinkets for the kids and played a little Bj at the Vegas Club. I got another picture at the horseshoe and we had the burger at the Horseshoe lunch counter ($5.00 with a 2 for one coupon). We made one last roll at the craps table in the California, where our luck had been exhausted and we left after losing $42. We returned our car to the rental center and made our way to the airport and our 10:55pm departure .. I fell asleep on the plane only to awake as the plane touched down on landing. What a trip… easily the least amount of money I have ever spent in Vegas and one of the best trips from a gambling standpoint in a long time.

    Final thoughts

Well, I wanted to come home from vegas with more money in my pocket than I left with and I easily did that. I really enjoyed the Cosmopolitan, and would definitely stay there again. I think I won $181 on the day of the coupon run, and had a net win of approximately $437 for the trip. I only bought three meals in vegas for a total of about $25. I did spend some on tips for the cocktail waitresses and in Downtown Vegas. Anyway, thanks for reading, I am always happy to provide any tips or answer any questions about my trip. The T2V message board is a great place to share and exchange Vegas stories, tips and suggestions. Peace, Rugbysteve.

That was fun :) enjoyed it. Brought back memories of the one and only time of getting the big ole drink with the everclear shot (I didn't even know what that stuff was but figured it would be a nice addition) hahahahah, I pretty much got hit by the grain train.
Nice to exit vegas with more than you went with .... and hopefully you got that Pats shirt back ;)

If I'm wrong - I apologize - BUT somehow the car made it back to the Cosmo from your downtown drunk.....exactly why I don't rent a car in Vegas anymore :(

That was the 7:30 show of Zumanity right? And the cross-dresser host mentioned later how weird that night was? and they brought that German guy on stage towards the end who had no idea what anyone was saying to him? I saw you getting smashed between the big girls! That was a great show! First time I've ever seen it but definitely not the last! Weren't those MyVegas seats amazing? We were equally placed near the stage but on the other side of the auditorium from you guys. What a great time that was!

    Great trip report too! :)

I was thinking the same thing. Easily the biggest gamble you can take in Vegas....
