Great movie! So many great performances :clap:
Caesar's Palace makes an appearance. Let me know if you notice an anachronism (I learned a new word) in the casino scenes.

Not yet, but we read the book. When my husband told me they were making it a movie I said, "That book? Are you sure?" It was a well-written book, but seemed a bit dry for a blockbuster movie. I'm looking forward to seeing it. Cast looks great!

This is one of the few movies where I'd recommend seeing both the movie and the book. The book is great for explaining complex financial issues; the movie is great for portraying scenes that don't come across as well on paper. I think the biggest takeaway is how scary it is that so many finance industry professionals truly didn't understand what was happening or what products they were selling. The movie makes thinks a bit over-dramatic, but things really were that bad.

i have it but havent watched it yet...i skimmed through a few sections though...as you said caesars palace does make a cameo and i find it weird that they did shoot a few scenes in vegas and at the real caesars palace but most of the movie was filmed in new orleans at harrahs casino new orleans, quite a few scenes were in besh steak house, some shots along mardi gras court slot/vp area, in masquerade and the theater...and the valet was designed to look like CP which in my opinion the failed, but its movie magic

Ok most people agree that book before movie gets your hopes up
But for those that have read/seen both? Would seeing it first ruin the book
Or is there so much " left on the plate" that the book would be better for having seen it?

I don't think reading the book first is going to be a problem. It's not like there are any spoilers, as most of us were actually present for the financial crisis. :haha:

The book is quite dry with the technical ins and outs of the credit default swaps and other dubious financial tactics. That's why I couldn't see it being made into a blockbuster type film. It's kind of like making your old college Econ101 textbook into a feature film. ;)

But the book was a good outline of what happened, how and why. I'd hope that is all there in the movie too and not overly Hollywood-ized to dumb it down for the masses.

Saw the movie, it was good for learning what happened in '08, there is a Doc called "Inside Job".

I finally logged into my audible account after wasting money month after month. Apparently I downloaded the book a few years ago. I enjoyed Moneyball which was also written by Micheal Lewis. Guess I'll "read" it before I see movie.

I just got back from seeing this movie. Wow... I feel like I need a light palate cleanser movie now, like maybe Leaving Las Vegas. :haha:

The part of the movie that really blew me away was making the complicated derivative market something the general public could understand. Using the game Jenga and the part with Selena Gomez at a blackjack table was pure genius! Loved it.

    Go see it!!!

    Steve Carell was outstanding.

And Christian Bale was... fine, but didn't seem like he really warranted an Oscar nomination.

I also suggest 'Margin Call' if you haven't seen it. Some great actors in that movie.
    Older movie, 2011 maybe.
