That's the key with UTH...you really have to disassociate Hold'em probabilities for UTH because of the Ante and Blind bets. Certain hands which are better than 50% EV in Hold'em, against a random hand, are actually -EV in UTH, due to the Ante/Blind. J10 is definitely positive EV in UTH...it's just my personal nemesis hand.

Thanks Sin and Top, you two guys have offered great insight and information about this carney game. I enjoyed playing it and look forward to doing more of the same in the future. I even got my GF to play along side me (she's strictly a penny slot player and would cringe at the thought of losing $100 a session) and it was great fun. She walked away a winner too playing $10 a hand and followed along with basic strategy.

That's awesome! One of my locals has about 8 UTH tables and they are often all full, especially on the weekends. I dare say it is more popular, or becoming more popular than 3CP, around here.

Another fun carny game to play is Crazy 4

    sin,
Barona has a max payout of $100k...but the table max is only $100, so 50k would be a table max hit.

Barona is definitely the best one I have played. I'm just to lazy to make the 1.5-1.75 hour drive there, for day trips...especially when I play an average of 2 hours on a day trip. I wish it were closer.

Which one is near Harrisburg? We go there often as it's where my MIL and BIL live. I know there are a few casinos near their houses because I see signs, but surprisingly I've never went.

With regards to the trips bet, I looked back at my play this weekend and except for the 2+ hrs at Ballys where I didn't make that wager, I did play $15 on it @ Caesars; I only recall hitting it 4 times (I a full house, a flush, a straight and trips), so using a conservative average of 30 hands an hour @ $15 per hand over the course of 9+ hours that I played, I "deposited" $4050, for a return that was significantly less. The full house payed 8 ($120), the flush paid 6 ($90), the straight paid 5 ($75) and the trips paid 3 ($45) for a total payout of $330, leaving me with a net loss of $3,720. Ain't that a kick in the head!

Let's not even talk about the $5 progressive that I gifted to Caesars over the course of that same period of time. I only hit it once when I had trip 4's on the flop, which netted me $40 (they pay $45, but take away your original $5 bet, those bastards!), but dumped them $1,350 total on that bet, for a net loss of $1,305.

Combining the two, I could have walked away with an added $5,025 in my BR had I not played those bonus bets. Sobering thoughts ...

I'm no where near Harrisburg, that's closer to the middle part of PA, iirc. Almost a 4 hr drive for me.

I haven't played this game in awhile but I'm in Vegas next month and you all have me wanting to try it again! So the trips bet is a relative bad bet but the house edge really isn't that high, right?

I like the trips bet... if you get a full-house or 4oak, and stop playing it after that, you'll likely be ahead on the bet... even a couple of flushes and straights can put you net-positive on the trips bet, assuming you stop afterwards.
I play it every hand these days, but then, I only bet $5 on it, so it's not that big of a deal to me... I used to play it about every 3rd hand, but that didn't help much, as it seemed like I'd hit it when I wasn't out there, and rarely hit when I was.
I think a better "strategy" would be to play until you get a hit...then play 1 or 2 more...then stop for 5 or 6 hands....repeat.

I don't know... I need to either on it or off it 100% during a session. That me.

Though I usually play min ante and trips

The HA on the trips bet depends on the payout of the particular casino. According to WoO, on a 9/7/4 table it's 0.9%; 8/6/5 is 1.9%; 8/7/4 is 3.49% and for 7/6/5 the HA is 6.1%

3.49% for a sucker side bet is not all that bad... better than 00 roulette!

Do you all press your bets or flat bet this game for blind and ante bets? If you do press is it something close to $25, $40, $50, $75? And back to $25 after a loss?

I definitely press. I'll start with $10 ante and increase by $5 each time I win a 2x or 4x. Hitting 3 or 4 in a row, which isn't all that uncommon, is a quick couple hundred bucks. Throw in a hit or two on the trips bet and I'll have easily doubled my $300 buy-in in short order. When I lose one, I'll pull the ante down $5 or $10, depending on what I'm betting and how much I'm up. I usually keep trips at $10 until I get to $25 ante, then I'll bump to $15.

On the flip side, if I start out losing a few hands, I'll drop down to $5 ante and trips and try to grind my way back to even before trying to press again.
