I've got a widescreen two queen room booked at Excalibur this weekend, and would like to get a room with a sunset view, thinking we might be able to view the near-total eclipse on Sunday evening at sunset.

I would imagine this to be NOT strip view at Excal? I did not book strip view. Would it be reasonable to ask for a sunset view room, and not get a blank stare from the desk clerk? Or is this what I am likely to get anyway?

You're correct, you want a view facing west, not towards the strip. Ask for a room facing west across I-15, or a sunset view.

I had a widescreen room in Tower 2 last week, facing north (NYNY).

Nice strip view, and, I could see the sunset but obviously not directly out the window. Had to stand off to one side.

So you have at least a couple of options.

Asking for a pool view should do the trick.

Cool, thanks. I'm assuming that it will be good viewing with just sunglasses, with the sun setting and the heavily tinted hotel windows.

You might want to go to maps.google.com and see how the Ex is set up. They have four towers, with rooms facing inside and outside. Some will be blocked by the other tower. Very complicated. And, guessing the check in clerk will not have a clue which way rooms face, other than strip view, mountain view, pool view, etc.

This is one of the coolest reasons for a specific room request!

    Have a great trip!
