Steps to making "the" move to Vegas

    Trips to Las Vegas:
    Recently I was asked if I could write down a step by step guide for a person moving to Vegas. Then I thought, there must be other people with the same type of questions so here it is: (This is a guide for making a permanant move)
    The Prep

    1. While still in hometown, get a copy of all utility bills you have been paying for the past 6 months, 1 statement from each would be fine.
    2. Set up a banking account with locations in both cities, home town and Vegas.
    3. check-out your medical records and those of your pets, make copies and return the records to the respective MD's. Dental records too.
    4. Notify all insurance companies of your impending move, and how will that change your rates?
    5.Have a cell phone plan that does not have roaming charges, as you will be calling home town and Vegas frequently, and a hometown phone book.
    6. Assess your furniture and belongings, are they worth $.78 per pound to move? if not have a yard sale. Furniture is cheap in Vegas.
    7. Buy or already have a digital camera,
    8. get all Trust paperwork ready if planning on purchasing in the name of the trust.
    The move

    1. decide on which side of Vegas you want to be in. use the strip as the dividing line. Is there a job situation that you need to be close too.
    2. decide the type of life style you want, do you want carefree type living or do you want to do yard work, and your own maint.
    3. decide if you want to rent for 6 months and "feel" the lay of the land (per say) prior to buying, if so, decide what type of rental you want, house, condo, apartment, mobil home.
    4. How much money are you putting down, what funds are you planning on using to purchase your new home? get them ready
    5. Find a realtor. Probably the most important decision as you need to find one who specializes in the type of home and life style choice you are looking for.


    Actual move in tips and hints.....

    * When hooking up utilities in your name here, you need to provide proof of having utilities in your name before OR you pay a hefty security deposit on those services.
    * Finding a MD takes time, but emergancies pop up out of no where for you and your pet, be prepared with the records you copied. records can take up to 6 months to be copied and sent from hometown.
    * Car insurance and registration is NOT cheap in NV. Shopping around for the cheaper rates will save you money, as well as the neighborhood you choose. Neighborhoods/communities with a low renter to owner ratio will be cheaper on insurance.
    * when house hunting, you will want to take photos of the property and its features as these will become something you may want to share also use the photos as documentation of what was in the property at time of writing the offer.
    * Always keep a financial buffer in liquid form.

    I hope this helps some you folks who are thinking about taking the plunge and moving the Vegas.

    I have printed this out. Very helpful Thank you for posting it.

    Some of this doesn't pertain to us just yet as we are not buying right when we get out there, BUT I'm thankful for the post because I never thought about having 6 months worth of utility bills, great advice :nworthy:

    Not just LV ,you could adapt this to most places.

    And if you are going to work in the casino industry or food/bartending industry I am almost positive a Sheriff's card and a Health card are required and it would be an asset to have both before an employment search. And these cards may be required for other industries as well, not sure though.
