My wife and her friend are flying Southwest in August. She has purchased several drink tickets, and hopes to be able to use them to bribe earlier boarders to switch her seats so that she and her friend can sit next to each other on the flight. Is this a feasible plan?

Why does she think sitting together will be a problem? If she's going to the trouble to do what you say, she should have no problem checking in exactly 24 hours before the flight and get a good boarding number, quite frankly they should be able to sit together even with a poor number.

Yea, why do you think they will have trouble sitting together?

    Check in at 24 hours.
Or pay $12.50 for early bird.

    Or, just get lucky.

If it's just two people, have one person buy the early bird check in - which probably 95% of the time will put you in the A group - it's most likely 100% if you're not on a big business traveler route. If one of the two is going to sit in the middle seat, no one will give you a hard time about saving the middle for the other person that's boarding later.
