    My Trip Report

We had received an offer from MGM back in August for three nights in a suite, $250 resort credit, $175 free play, and two free tickets to a show. Knowing that another “polar vortex” was going to take over the country last week, I contacted a host who had sent me a random slot tournament email months ago in September and asked what he could do for the fourth night. He replied quickly that he would comp it, so after sending him another email telling him to book a smoking suite or feel my wifes wrath, we were set.

Flights: We flew Southwest out of Tulsa, OK, which is about a three hour drive down the interstate from our home in Missouri. Originally, I had jumped on a pair of tickets from KC for $190 R/T on southwest when Spirit came to KC, but Ann is not a fan of driving to KC, so I ended up changing to Tulsa at an increased price. This worked out as southwest reduced the price later on, so I banked the savings and three days after, they ran a good sale, which resulted in another trip from Tulsa in February for 220 r/t less banked funds. Flights were on time, early coming back, so no complaints.

Transportation: Presidential limo with Ted from WI as our driver. A pleasure as always, we stopped at Lowes, at the end of the runways, to pick up a box fan, knowing that the walls, and especially the connecting doors, at MGM are paper thin. A $16 fan is a cheap insurance policy against noisy neighbors. After kicking back in the Lowes parking lot shooting the breeze with Ted and raising our nicotine level back to normal levels, we were off to MGM at 2:15 PM. Ted looked at me like I was crazy wanting to get a fan, and when we arrived he asked the bellman how many people came with fans. She replied “a lot”.

Check in: Knowing that room types are not guaranteed, I contacted a face book friend who works the front desk, either as a manager or agent, not sure which as I've never actually met her. It's become my routine to contact her a few days before to ask her to block a smoking room for us since we don't want to get up, throw on clothes, etc. She replied back that she blocked us room xxxxxx and if another manger doesn't unblock it, we will be set. With that said, we get in the empty platinum line and waited a few minutes.

I tell the clerk we have a smoking suite blocked and she types a few minutes, says yes, here it is, in big capital letters do not unblock this room, yada, yada, yada, and it's not ready yet, let me see if I can get you another room that is ready. I ask, a suite? No, just a normal room.. Wait, what? We want our suite, and will wait. So she then says, let me call a manager. No dice, no other suite is available, do you want to wait? Uh, yes. So she calls housekeeping to put a rush on it.

Now I'm thinking, who gives a shit, it's 2:30 in the afternoon, clean the room, I'm ready to get my gamble on, and the casino is right there. She finally hands me some keys and says I'll call you when its ready in an hour.

So we go gamble for and hour and a half, Ann goes to make a hair appointment, we go back to the “get keys here” line and another guy calls us up. He starts pecking on the computer, gives us a look, and says did you already put your bags in there? Nope. He says I'll be right back. What seemed like three years, but was probably only ten minutes of Ann saying let's go to the South Point, he comes back and hands us our keys. I tell him I noticed the “oh shit” look on his face before he left and that lightened the mood.

Now the suite isn't to big of a deal, but when it's offered and booked that way, that's another story. We go up to 24-205 and sure enough it's a suite, and it turns out the luggage was a welcoming gift from said random host.

Noise: Normally, I don't mention noise in a trip report, but this room has what must be a direct line to the bathroom next door hollow core connecting door. Coming from central time, I'm wide awake at 3:30 AM, and we finally get out of bed at 6:30 and make coffee (we bring our own pot). At 7 am, the entry door next door slams and then we hear, plain as day, a loud screeching sound that sounded like a cross between a terrified zebra and the coughing sound from Ferris Buelers day off. Ann looks at me and says WTF is that. After about five minutes of it, I say the guy next door is coughing up a lung. Then we hear a flush and dead silence for the next 24 hours. Again, at 7 AM, the sound repeats. This time we figured out that he was in Party till you Puke mode, and doing it right. Day three, he either said to hell with it or checked out, don't know.

I hate connecting doors, the first trip to MGM, I opened the door to the room, closed it and went back downstairs to change rooms as the people next door were watching cartoon network full blast.

Housekeeping: The room was clean, no complaints. The only thing that wasn't clean was the passive exhaust vent above the toilet, which had the typical 1” thick layer of dust, lint, filth on it. I guess the housekeepers never look up after scrubbing the toilet, or just don't give a fuck. Seriously, a 10 second swiffer once a week and problem solved. Seems like this is everywhere though.

Food: Had room service three nights, and food court Mexican one night. We also got some take out salsa/beans/cheese/chips from GyG at NYNY. It was actually the best food of the trip.

Gambling: As usual, I was a slot whore, never made it to the craps table. I'm mainly a dick around on the pennies in the morning and lose money guy, and hit up the 5 line $'s after lunch to hopefully win it back. That's my main complaint about the South Point, very few $ machines, and their HL room sucks, so hence the stay on the strip. MGM in the past (as in four months ago) had tons of $ games, but this trip it seems they were reduced by a bit. Still plenty to play, just didn't seem to have as many. Between that and the “specialty game bullshit” I ended up playing 9 line $ machines more that I'm used to.

Tuesday I wandered around most of the morning looking for something that would give me some play, Ann came down around 1 PM and wanted to play top $, and found a machine that was hitting pretty good, to the point she told me to go away. I'm a good husband, so I went away and found a triple red hot 9 line $ machine that I managed to build up to $1000, getting my morning money back. We mainly hung around that area the rest of the day, with an occasional hit and run in the HL room and ended up even so far for the trip.

Wednesday, same story, down about 1K when Ann came down around 12:30 to kill time before her cut/color at 2. She says she wants a drink and after receiving the look for the audacity to point out they want $6 for a beer at the bar, I take her into the HL room where the cocktail vultures take care of us right quick. I sit down at a 9 line machine, she sits down at a 2 coin $5 machine and proceeds to show me how it's done, hitting for 1K almost immediately. She then heads off to the salon asking where I'll be. The Coors was coming quick and cold, so I said I'll be right here. Well that turned out to be stupid, but it took about three hours to get that way. Ran the machine up to $1009 on a $100 start, put that in my pocket, and in true “I can't lose fashion” put another thousand in and the ticket while waiting for her to get back. So after a $1500 twelve pack of Coors, I go hit up a 5 line super times pay for $500 when Ann calls. She left me a blond and came back a redhead. It was probably the Coors, but I blamed the “poor lighting” for not doing the standing ovation, jump up and down, greatest haircut ever dance. I will say Thursday morning, the cut and color looked great.

Back to Wednesday, so we head back to the HL room, where I move away from Coors to 7/7's, best idea ever said no one. We play for a bit, I'm still losing while Anns machine is letting her play, I decide to go play some 40 line Divinchi diamonds. That went wrong real quick. Blew through the free play, and all the money in my wallet, asked Ann for some money and got the hell no reply. I have a smart wife.

So we end up going up to the room at 6:30, after a brief stop at the food court Mexican joint. I got the carnitas burrito, which I thought was great, but I was told the next morning by Ann it was awful. Everything tastes good when your hammered.

Thursday: I did not, repeat, did not make the zebra sounds like the guy next door, in fact, I felt fine. Must have been the 7 up. After calling the bank to find out why the ATM machine would not give me any money yesterday, find out that after the debit card got hacked (thanks home depot), they reset my withdraw limit back to 500 per day and 500+5.99 withdraw fee is greater than allowed, so got that fixed “just in case” and thanked my bank (secretly) and thanked my laziness of not wanting to go to the room for still having plenty of money to play on today, the last full day of fun. Or losing. Your choice.

So, long story short, can't hit shit. Ann shows up, I say lets go to NYNY and hit up their HL room, even though their bloody Marys suck. We head over, and finally find a 9 line super times pay that pays. Take it for $600 and Ann is playing a $ Texas tea, and winning. So I take the winnings, and watch her, we decide to go back to MGM and play in their HL room, why? So we can lose, or course. Head back over to NYNY, where a guy is playing max bet on the Texas Tea. So when your playing $45 bet, when do you stop, or should I say, when do you either make it to where you've won enough? We mess around there for a bit, go to GyG for the take out, and head back to MGM.

Halfway there, Anns knee grows to the size of a grapefruit, so she hobbles back to the room. Nothing wrong with her knee, according to the knee doctor, but we figure that's because it isn't knee replacement criteria. Right.

So I continue on at MGM, and lose, finally said that's enough and go upstairs.

Friday. Flight leaves around 1 PM, so we pack up and I head down around 9 to see if there is anything that needs to be comped by Mlife. She looks up the balance and says you owe 800. WTF? I ask her what it is. She says it's some sunglasses that Ann had bought, of which she paid 600 in cash and charged 135 to the room. Of course, they forgot when keying it in that the 600 was cash, so we had to wait till 10 to get that fixed. Everything else was taken care of, except tips. We check out and head for the airport.

Mlife: We earned 65,xxx tier credits, which seems low to me. I asked at the desk if it was still 10 tier credits per point, which they confirmed. Now I know I had one session in the HL room where I earned 3000 points that session, which should be 30K tier, and another session with 1500 points, which is another 15K tier. I avoid the specialty slots, since I can play them in Tunica or South Point with no “punishment”. Maybe the tier score will go up in the next few days, we will see.

VMB Bracelets: Didn't see any this trip, did speak with Tammy from the board on the phone, but they were at SLS for the day and then off to South point the next, so we never had a chance to meet up. It was a pleasure talking though.

Next trip: Going back in February, probably back to the South point. Money seems to last longer there, and the comps are way better for amount played

Great TR buddy! You and I share a true hatred of adjoining doors. That is one thing great about the Orleans... no adjoining rooms and thick as hell walls. Regardless if it's business or personal, I always ask for no adjoining door. But people are so rude, I've had more than my fair share recently of people standing in the HALL talking loud as hell late at night/early morning. So little courtesy anymore.

Happy to hear you did get the suite and had some positive sessions. One of these days our trips are going to overlap!

Did Ann buy the poor lighting excuse? lol. I had the same thing happen with my debit card and didn't find out my limit had been set back to $500/day after card was compromised until I was in Vegas trying to get money. Fortunately quick call rectified it.

I rarely play reel slots these days but your slot porn has me convinced I should give them a try.

Add me to the hate connecting doors club.
