I can't think of any that promote must hit by that don't state what that number is. The most popular ones are the Quick Hit games and their Major is usually a sum that must hit by the time it reaches $500.

Every one that says "must hit by" is followed by the amount.

The Gaming Commission's rules are vague at best, however when the jackpot exceeds an amount to improve the player's edge then you'll see more people on the game.

There is no set rule as to when the jackpot must hit. If there was then everyone would play at that point, even a range would give away the point at which the progressive would hit.

If it says must hit by then it will be a low number.

Still better than nothing, but it factors into the overall payback percentage and lowers that to compensate for the progressive payout. So, if you don't hit it you're playing a a higher house take against you.

Best to play those only if you intend to play for a while, or just 3 plays and run.

You also need to differentiate them based on whether the progressive increases on bets or on wins. A number of WMS progressives (Mystical Unicorn, etc.) increase on wins which makes it much harder to determine when the positive EV occurs because of course you don't know how much coin in will be required. In the case of increase on bets, a simple calculation of $ left to guaranteed hit, divided by the amount the progressive increases per bet. So, say it's a must hit by $500 with the progressive currently sitting at $475, and the progressive goes up by $0.01 for every $1 put through the machine, it still needs $2,500 in coin in to guarantee the hit.

I think this description is spot on. In the same scenario, if the progressive was at $495 then it would require $500 coin-in to reach the "MUST PAY BY" amount...assuming you get ZERO wins (which is unlikely) you will break even on the jackpot win. So I think the "magic number" in this situation would be $495...since the casino would make nothing on the remaining $500 coin-in...so the occupied slot is just wasted.

The Must hit or Must pay by slots actually are +EV I cant tell you how many times I have seen people playing a bank of them with 1 machine empty with a must hit by 500 sitting at Around $475.00, actually if you do the math you can figure out how much coin in goes towards moving the jackpot up and make a +EV play, I have played a local machine with a must hit by $500.00 sitting at $470 where by doing the math on the coin in needed to move the jackpot up,it would hit $500.00 I have started with $300-$400 and have never reloaded before hitting the $500 and its always hit before getting to $500.00 if you count the points accumulated and the possible wins, its a better spot then a random machine that's for sure.

Edit I am not sure if I just got lucky the many times this has happened or if Math was on my side, the jackpot number was always rolling so I couldn't truly tell how much each spin counted towards the jackpot, but I am pretty sure it was about .1 per $1

You cant really calculate the EV without knowing the hit probabilities.

but as you (and I) said, you can calculate how much coin-in is required to hit the "Must hit by" amount simply by observing how much the progressive increases for a given coin in.

for example. the Lion's Share slot goes up 9 cents for every $12 coin in...so you can easily calculate the required coin-in to get to a particular progressive amount

If the progressive is a "must hit by..." then it will say that on the front and list the amount it must hit by.

Not sure how many are answering the original question. I am fairly sure the poster was referring to machines actually show the TOP end number,or hit by. That was not question - instead the OP wanted to know what the number was. I assume these sometimes hit BEFORE the number posted and wanted to know that number. Guessing that is random.
