I'm leaving a few days before you get there, or else I'd have bought you a beer or five. That said, what hotel will you be staying at?

Welcome to VMB! There's a thread full of people who are going to be in Vegas in September here - http://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/index.php?posts/1337950/

I didn't look to see if there's a meet up of board members on your dates, but post your dates in there and maybe you can arrange to meet some other members for a drink or twelve.

    Enjoy your trip!

Down town is great. Check out the Boar's Head bar at Main Street Station if you care for video poker. Great bartenders. The bar is adjacent to the casino and sits a few steps above the casino floor level. It's a good feel the way you can look out over the slot machines. The crowd is mostly older with a few young folk tossed in.

Downtown is a different vacation than the Strip...completely different vibe. Both are fun. On the Strip you'll get more luxury, Downtown you'll get more value. Keep that in mind when you transfer from MGM to your stay Downtown. That being said, all of the casinos Downtown offer a good value and have positives. Bars? Each casino has a bar or two that has it's own vibe and is fun. All charge less than 1/2 of what the same drink on the Strip would cost. Rooms? Nothing like the Strip as you'll find negatives in every room Downtown; but they're generally clean and acceptable. Gambling? Table minimums are 1/2 of what you'll find on the Strip and the rules are better. Video Poker? Lots of full pay schedules all over. Restaruants? Tons of really good choices. Ask if you're interested. Sites? The Neon Museum, The Mob Museum and the Container Park to start but if you're not familiar with Downtown, I'd just spend the first trip wandering from property to property and getting the feel of which hotel/casino you'll want to make your home on future trips where you'll know the place better and can then fit in some site seeing. Enjoy the stage shows in the evenings.

Welcome! As has already been stated, downtown is going to give you more bang for your buck, but with less frills. I myself, am perfectly okay with that. We try to stay mostly downtown with a side trip to the strip for a night or two on every trip.
Good luck on your trip, we will be missing you by a couple months. :-D
