Since Friday is a holy day of obligation, I am going to ATTEMPT to go to mass at 12:10 at the church downtown. Is it safe for me (a female) to walk by myself from the downtown casinos and back?

There is a church two blocks from the GN: St. Joan of Arc, 315 Casino Center Blvd. We stayed at Ceasars in May and caught the Duece Sunday morning. After mass, we walked right over to Freemont St. There will be other people walking to and from mass. We ran into a couple who sat behind us at Mermaids (deep fried oreos!)

I might not be the best person to answer this, because I am a large man (a little over 6 feet tall, stocky) and also not a practicing Catholic (though I was baptized at birth), but I'll give it a try...

I know there are two Catholic churches downtown. You didn't specify which one you are interested in attending.

    1. One of them is St. Joseph's, 131 N. 9th Street. Link on Yelp: http://www.yelp.com/biz/st-josephs-catholic-church-las-vegas (if this helps). To get there, find the El Cortez Casino (which is totally safe) and exit the casino on Ogden Street. You'll need to go east two blocks.

The El Cortez is the eastern end of the "Casino District" downtown. There are lots of opinions about continuing to go east... Some people say it's dangerous/sketchy, others say it's been cleaned up a lot with the "Fremont East" initiative. If you're going at noon, I wouldn't be afraid. There are some rundown hotels/motels and some homeless people and you might be asked for spare change, but it's not too bad at all.

    2. Another idea... Several times, I've taken buses that end up at the downtown transportation center on Bonneville Street and I've walked the 4 blocks from there to Fremont Street, by taking Casino Center Drive.

You pass law enforcement places like the City of Las Vegas Municipal Court, the Clark County Court, the Clark County Detention Center... which may sound like bad places to be near, but if you think about it-- there's always police officers nearby, right?

Well, you also pass by the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, only 1.5 blocks away from the Golden Nugget. Address: 315. S. Casino Center Blvd., Yelp link: http://www.yelp.com/biz/st-joan-of-arc-church-las-vegas if it interests you.

Both of these churches are close to downtown. But they are also quite small.

You didn't ask, but if you are looking for a larger church, there is one right on the Las Vegas Strip, Yelp link http://www.yelp.com/biz/guardian-angel-cathedral-las-vegas-2 if it interests you. It's located south of The Riviera and north of The Wynn.

St. Joan of Arc is by far closer to downtown not scary at all. I stopped there last May and really liked the little church.....more modest than the grand cathedrals on the STRIP.....GIVES a real homey feel.

Its All Saints Day and I am going to pray that a) I remember to go and b) I remember to not start drinking until after noon so I can remember to go.

Yikes! All these years staying at GN and I didn't realize it was that close. No more excuses for me...
