I wanna try the complementary upgrade/$20 request for the 1st time at Rio next week..we plan to check in early (noonish) and pay the early check-in fee..mainly to avoid waiting in line at 4pm....does anyone have an opinion as to whether this will hurt or help our chance for an upgrade?.. I would rather check in later than lose the opportunity for a better room...thanks

Based solely on checkin time I would have to say the later the better. Best chances would be way after 4 after everyone has checked in for the day, 8-10PM or so.

I'd have to agree that your chances for an upgrade are probably proportional to the time you check in. With few exceptions, most of my upgrades were after 9 pm or even after midnight. The upgrade was often preceded by a deer in the headlights look from the desk clerk followed by the dreaded "I'll be right back" or an "Uh-oh". These days I much prefer arriving in the morning and would rather get the room stuff out of the way asap, so it's no telling if I'll ever get another.
