    My Trip Report

I booked a package deal thru Allegiant. $392 for hotel and air so I jumped on it. Of course, then I kept checking rates up until the day we left wondering if I should have locked myself into the room at the Rio. Having never stayed there, it made me a little nervous. I've previously stayed at Orleans on almost every visit but they were more expensive.

Flight was on time and we checked in about midnight. We were given a room with a view of the roof and partial strip view on the 5th floor. Went downstairs to check out the casino and promptly made a donation to their building fund. Music came on about 2am (really loud) and scared the bejeebees out of us. A girl was doing a poor job of dancing on the table for about 2 minutes and then it was over. Thank goodness. It was painful to watch and we just happened to be close to the little stage.

The Wizard of Oz penny machine is pretty cool. It's fun to play when you get the bonus round. We stayed up playing slots until about 3. I really wanted to play craps and roulette but the $10-15 minimum bet isn't my style. Went to bed and slept okay. The beds weren't great. Comfortable enough but not something I would choose again. This obviously wasn't a remodeled room. It seemed clean and was very spacious. My friend said her bed had a spring poking her (she didn't tell me this until we checked out).

The second day we had breakfast at the Orleans and it was just as good as I remembered. $6.99 w/players card and well worth it. Caught the free shuttle to Bally's and took the monorail to the convention center. We had planned on walking down to Harrah's but the shuttle from the Orleans drops you off way in the back of Bally's and it would have been quite a walk for us at that point. After work, we headed back to the Rio, changed and hit the Gold Coast buffet for dinner. Dinner was $9.99 for prime rib and it was very, very good! Played at the GC for a while and also played some slots at the Orleans. The largest jackpot I hit was $100 on a quarter machine.

Second night in the room and the carpet doesn't look very clean, maid didn't do anything except make the beds and change out towels. Garbage still in the room, glasses in the hallway and dirty glasses still in the bathroom. I opened up the mini bar and it wasn't even stocked. There were 2 beer cans, 3 or 4 bottles (1 toppled over) and some snacks. It looked as if it had been pillaged. Since we hadn't used anything and didn't want to get charged for it, I talked to the front desk. Apparently, they only stock the mini bar when you ask for it. Otherwise they do it once a week. I thought that was rather strange. I didn't complain about the maid service because I thought it may have been a fluke that day.

On the third day, we ate breakfast at the Gold Coast (Rio buffet wasn't in the budget). After work, we played a Craps machine at the Mirage and had a blast. The minimum bet was $3 or $5. There were about 8 seats around the table. It was fun because my friend had never played and she was intimidated by the real table. This way she learned a lot and we had a great time. We played for hours on $20.

We ate at the Mirage buffet. I used myVegas reward and she paid $29.99. Honestly, if I had paid $30 I would have been mad. It was good, but not that good. I mostly ate crab legs and shrimp. I had a small piece of chicken and some chinese beef dish. The desserts were very pretty, but not very good. It was a very well kept buffet and clean but not much of a selection. I won't go there again unless I have a free pass. I didn't care for the smell in the casino either. Honestly, it gave me a headache. I guess they have an air freshener scent that is pumped in? I couldn't seem to escape it no matter where I went there.

Our room started to smell like urine on the 3rd day and lo and behold there was a pet in room sign on the door that I hadn't noticed the first day at all when we checked in. We had also come in to a leaking toilet in the bathroom which is what really made me decide to talk to someone. I complained at the front desk and we were moved to a very nice room on the 35th floor with a beautiful view of the pool and the strip. This was a newly remodeled room in the Masquerade tower. It was very clean and nice but the decor is weird. I took some pics but I'll have to figure out how to post them. The bed in the room was super comfortable!

We played a lot in the casino (mostly slots). I tried just about every machine there and couldn't win at all. The most I saw anyone win in 4 days was $1200 but I watched the man put $700 in the machine first.

Overall, we had a great time (even though we left quite a bit of $ there). We tried a few new places and had a LOT of fun. I can't wait to go back!

I won't stay at the Rio again without a car. Having to walk over to the Gold Coast and take the shuttle was kind of a pain and time consuming. The casino was okay, but I felt like no matter what we did we couldn't win on anything. I don't care for the dancers on the tables. I found it pretty awkward. The buffet was expensive. I guess the whole place just has more of a party feel to it, I can't really explain it. It was worth a try and they did make up for the crappy service and problems with the room by moving us but it's just not on my list of favorites. If they sent me a fantastic offer, I'd try it again but only if I'm on vacation and don't have to keep to a schedule. Taking taxis everywhere gets expensive.

I will probably go back to meet a friend for a girl's weekend next month. We'll see how many offers I get between now and then ;)

I don't think I'll buy a package deal again. I seem to get better deals by booking separately.

Anyway, I hope this TR is informative and helpful in some way. In the meantime, I'll start planning my next trip :ssst:

Can't believe you have stayed at the Orleans and not received the generic 2 nights free offer. You might want to call and see if you are on a list somewhere with the offer. Also the maid service is one of the things I think has the Orleans on top of my room preference list, they are thorough and quite pleasant. Good trip report.

Thanks for sharing. Don't really think I would like staying off-strip. I favor having center strip location so that I can walk to wherever I go. Last trip we did take the shuttle to Gold Coast and enjoyed the afternoon.

We are staying at the Rio in a month...You definitely convinced me to get a car, not so much for night but to get around during the day. Would you say that the Rio is more of a younger crowd ? I'm going on 50 and my wife is 40. we like a bit of action, not O'sheas but... We usually stay at Flamingo do you think this is a good call for us ?
    Thanks, Chrisby (nice TR:cheers:)

Thanks for posting your report. I haven't been to the Rio in years but always mean to visit. Sorry you lost but its nice when people post about losing trips since that's what most trips are. Switch from slots to video poker or table games to improve your chances. The penny slots are the worst -- just vacuum cleaners. Notice how you got your best play at craps? Even though that was still a machine.

    Rio has shuttles

Did you go to the Gold Coast to use their shuttle to Orleans?

Yes, the Gold Coast has a shuttle, but so does the Rio. The Rio shuttles take you to Bally's and Harrah's.

The shuttles pick you up on the side facing the Gold Coast.

Also, the PALMS started a shuttle service in 2012 that goes to Caesars.

Maybe these have shutdown since last August of 2012.

In short, the Gold Coast has a shuttle service, the PALMS had/has a shuttle service, and the Rio has/had a shuttle service.

I would call the Rio and the Palms to make sure they are still running, as you have confirmed the Gold Coast is still running.

We took the free shuttle from the Gold Coast to the Orleans. We also took the shuttle from Rio to Harrahs and back. Shuttle drivers were all very nice. We did end up spending a lot of time waiting on them though mostly because my friend was lagging behind :( Seems like we always arrived about 10 minutes after the shuttle left but I guess that was just poor time management on our part.

I'm not sure where the shuttle drops off when you take it from the Rio to Ballys as we didn't take that one.

As far as the Orleans, it's been almost 9 years. I did get a new card while I was there so I'm hoping the offers will come.

I think the Flamingo is better, honestly. You're so much closer to everything. I just didn't care for the vibe at the Rio. The employees we ran into were nice but the casino is very loud most of the time and then there are the Bevertainers. :goofy:

I would stay at the Flamingo again any day (as long as they don't bill my debit card again for the upgraded suite and tie up all my money for the vacation!)

Next time I want to stay on the strip I'll stay at Flamingo or Ballys. A bunch of people that were in our group for the convention stayed at the Quad! Most of them were extremely unhappy due to dirty rooms, water leaks, no hot water, smells, etc.

Off strip, my first choice is definitely Orleans. After spending time in the Rio and Gold Coast last week the air at Orleans is like a fresh breeze. They definitely have a much better ventilation system there.

Enjoyed your trip report. I am staying at RIO in May although i usually stay at Bally's (will be at Bally's in Aug. and Nov.). Reading your TR i am considering going back to Bally's in May, but my room at Rio is comped and no resort fee. I can book Bally's in May (which is also comped) instead of Rio but i'll have to pay the resort fee. I won't have a car but was hoping the Shuttle would be a savoir as i spend most of my time on the strip. Hmmm...........decisions, decisions.
The Rio shuttle stops at Bally's on the south side, near the parking garage, same as the Gold Coast shuttle.

Thanks for your perspective on things. I honestly have never been a big fan of Cravings either.
