I've been studying and practicing blackjack basic strategy for my upcoming first trip to Vegas and I need help with something. I'm playing an app that let's you know when you've deviated from basic strategy and it alerted me when I hit on 3,4,A. The dealer had K. The chart says to hit A,7 so I'm confused. Is 3,4,A supposed to be played different from A,7?

Interesting question cause I'd be hitting that hand too.

There are a few exceptions to basic strategy based on the composition of the hand. Standing on a soft 18 made up of more than two cards vs. A is one of them, if I'm not mistaken.

I assume it's because any soft 18 with three or more cards is going to have multiple small cards (A,2,3) in it...meaning there are that many fewer cards left in the deck that can improve the hand.

    Edit: I misread the OP...versus a 10, I thought it was still a hit...:confused2:

vs. A yes, but OP said dealer had a K. If that's the case, the app is wrong.

Thanks for the replies. Not sure what that was all about, but I guess I'll keep hitting.

Thanks, that site has really helped me so far. The simple strategy was easy to learn. Now I'm trying to get the exceptions right.

Hit the hand. The winning average needs to be 18.5 against a 10 card. So, its a toss up but you can't improve the hand unless you hit it.

$1 shipped off eBay, and allowed on the table, and is a very good guide:
