I'm playing in a free poker tournament next month where, if you cash, you have your choice of 'play until you lose' promo chips or slot cash. And I'm torn on which to take.

The promo chips can only be used on even money bets. So, red/black, odd/even at the roulette wheel, some bets at craps etc. Or at blackjack. Craps is out because I have no idea what I'm doing. Blackjack is out since I don't know basic strategy and I hate that other players get mad at you if you don't "play right". I could learn basic strategy but I don't know if I want to because if I don't cash, I wasted that time as I don't plan on ever playing BJ at a casino. I know I could bring a cheat sheet, but blackjack just isn't for me.

So that basically leaves even money bets on roulette or slot play. I think it might be fun playing roulette. I've played it a little in the past but I don't know if that's the best way to go. What's the lowest return on a slot machine...80%? And depending on how much I have, I'd probably play a higher limit and the higher limits pay back better. (I know just because a machine is set to return 80%, that doesn't guarantee I will retain 80%...it's 80% over the life of the machine.)

But once I spin, that amount I bet on a slot is gone...win or lose. If I play roulette and bet red and it comes up red, I get paid real money AND get to keep the promo chip to bet again. So, I could get on a hot streak and win a bunch of real money while only risking one promo chip that I keep getting back. Or I could be wrong every single time and not win anything. While at the slot machine, you're not going to lose EVERY time. Hmm. Not sure what I'm going to do but I hope I have to make that decision when I'm there.

So what's everybody's thoughts? Really, craps and blackjack are out. Just roulette or slots. I don't know the payouts of the tournament so I don't know what dollar amount we're talking here. It is a $75k total prize tournament but I don't know how many are playing and how many will cash, etc. Would it change your opinion on what to play depending on the total amount won? Like would you do something different if you won $100 versus if you won $5k? Thanks!

If VP is an option with the slot play, then I would consider that too because you only need to play through the slot play once. Otherwise, the play until you lose chips likely provide better return.

As for the minimum long term return on electronic machines, is actually 75% in NV. But the market sets the machines a lot higher than that.

Since I never play but I like the game except for cost, I probably mess around with craps if you don't want to play bj.

Can you use it at Baccarat?

I agree VP is easy to run money through esp jacks or bonus...

Yeah, should be good on baccarat. Just put them on Banker, super easy and better house edge than slots or roulette.

    I like slot play.

Hit a jackpot on their money and you're golden.

Promo chips are nice though, but more just for washing and taking the cash.

    it depends on YOUR play.

If you play VP or Slots, then it is EXACTLY like cash. If you do not like to play those, then table play.

I hate you. I've never had anything close to that on my FP.

But, back to the question. All comes down to what you like to play. If you like table games, get the chips and a BJ strategy card. If you like VP/Slots, get the free play. Either way, good luck.

Thanks for the replies! Didn't think about Baccarat. Not sure if VP is included. Suppose I should worry about cashing first. Then I'll make my decision on how I feel at the moment.
