  1. I love reading all of your trip reports and vowed to do one of my own but for now I'm content doing a pre-trip report in the hopes that it will help me calm down. I'm terribly excited to leave for Vegas in less than 2 weeks. :D We'll be there from Aug 15-18. It's two couples going and we are all mid-20's.

One small note, this is my favorite place to read about Vegas. Occasionally for sh*ts & giggles I check out other message boards but find the constant rude, obnoxious, UN-helpful posts to be a bit draining to sort through. [IMG]

I've fished for some different kinds of info from you guys over the past few months and if you read this and can offer any more suggestions/ideas/tips, I would gladly welcome them!!

Here's the background story and tentative plans we have going...

My best friend and her hubby got married two years ago. They have two kids, have never had a vacation together, and never took a honeymoon. My friend recently finished her radiation and her cancer is in remission. We decided it was time to party. My gfriend and I (yes, two girls as a couple, you see) decided they need a break and our favorite place to go is Vegas so we figured we'd take our friends. My gfriend and I are financing the trip (for all 4 of us). You can see why suggestions have been appreciated. Don't want to waste any time/money. We have about $1500 for all of us for 3 nights (no, I don't count the days because I won't be awake for them anyway!!!!)

We live in Phoenix so the cheapest route, by far, is to drive to Vegas. Once we get there, we won't drive though. Who wants to be the DD?? Not me! [IMG]

I booked 2 rooms for 3 nights at the Barbary Coast. Got that splendid "two nights, third free" deal and with the mid-strip location, couldn't pass it up. I've never stayed at the BC but I'm not picky as long as the room is clean. We are hoping to be able to see a lot at mid-strip casinos by foot to save money on transportation. (Back to that whole "doing the vacation cheap" thing...!!) I have called and talked to somebody in reservations to see if they could pre-assign my friends a nice room with any view of the fountains, explaining the "post-cancer" and "never had a honeymoon" situation to the guy from BC. I told him I don't care what room I end up in, as I've been to Vegas plenty. He said he'd do his best. I'll let you know how that turns out. (I used to work for a hotel and know that preassignment means the hotel will accomodate unless they are really full that night and then you are S.O.L.) Also, guy on the phone was really nice. I hope that's a good premonition.

I am excited because my friend and I are going to shuttle it over to Gold Coast from the BC for Bingo-my first time playing Bingo ever and I have a 2for1 coupon!

Her hubby wants to check out the Nascar cafe, which will give us a chance to see the monorail too as a way to get to Sahara.

I thought if anybody were in the mood we'd try a 2for1 coupon for the comedy club at Riviera while we were in this neck of the woods.

My very "typical housemom" friend wants to party it up and go dancing!! I bet housemoms are Girls Gone Wild, I can't wait to see this! Your suggestions have led me to think the Carnival Court is laid back enough for us to just have a relaxed/drinking/dancing/good time without a meat-market feel. Exactly what I think she'll like!

I want to see the lions at MGM because I'm a big kid and want to see the pretty kitties. My gfriend wants to see what they've done to butcher the pirate show at TI.

I think just enough plans to bring us to a few areas of the stip for sightseeing but not so much that we feel "busy" or "pushed for time". My gfriend and I always get sidetracked while sightseeing because of too much free drinking at the nickel slots....

Ok, I have calmed down a bit.

    WOOOOHOOOOO

    Ok, I lied.

Gwen, I think it is extrememly nice of you to want to do something special for your friend and her husband and I hope your trip goes very smoothly. I'll be there Saturday (yes this Saturday) so I understand your excitement!. I hope you and your girlfriend win big on the lots and enjoy the free beer. Barbary Coast has some really great waitresses who always laugh when I order my Bloody Mary (no eyeballs please), I can't stand Olives, it is like they are watching me. So the waitress kept bringing me drinks hollering, Bloody Mary, No Eyeballs!.. Enjoy have fun, and tell your friend to take it easy, the heat could get to her.

Sounds like you have everything planned out. Just a couple of my suggestions, first, when you take the shuttle over to the gold coast, when you're done walk next door to the RIO, its alot of fun and a real party atmosphere. The one side of the the casino has a carnival in the sky, which is basicly a parade of floats that hangs from the cieling its all free and it runs every 2 hours starting at 6 i think. Also, from the RIO you can take a free shuttle over to Harrahs, it picks up every 15mins and will get you back to the strip.
Have fun, ill be there from AUG25-28 for my 2nd time this year and i cant wait.

Since you're going to be in the neighborhood anyway...

What about hanging out at the Voodoo Lounge at the Rio? It's a little more laid back than the Ghost Bar across the street.

I've heard good things about Harrah's Carnival Court, but since it's outside it might be a little hot? But since you're from Phoenix it might not be a problem. Maybe somebody else with direct experience will chime in.

    Regardless, have a great time!

What a wonderful thing you are doing. I hope your have the most wonderful time & win big !!
Don't forget to walk down Flamingo to Ellis Island for the $4.95 steak dinner(just ask for it - not on menu). It is unbelieveably good.
My 1st trip to LV went to Gold Coast & played Bingo - also 1st time for me since I was a child. Had a great time - they give free drinks there also but you must go up to the window & get them.
    Good luck to you all.

In the spirit of doing something nice, let me set you and your group up with free access to a coupel clubs so you can have fun. I'm not sure what music or crowd you're looking for but I think we can find something for you.

I think you will LOVE Harrah's Carnival Bar. I know I did when I was there a few years ago. Of course we were there in April but you have just got to see the bartenders in action. So cool! Enjoy.

Vegashost, thank you so much for the offer but while I love the whole "clubbing" thing, I don't think my friend will be into that. I just have a feeling that a fun bar with drinks, some music, some dancing, and a laid-back atmosphere will be the best bet for her. It'll be "wild" to her without making her feel uncomfortable. Does that make any sense?

As for the temp in Vegas...bring it on. It was 100* at 8am today. hahahahahaha I laugh so I don't cry. We won't be walking around until night and I can handle 90* and shady (or sundown) with jeans on. Us Phoenicians are such rebels...

Keep any tips coming you guys can think of! I really enjoyed all of the replies. I forgot about that float "parade of sorts" at the Rio and of course FREE is my favorite word!

    Thanks so much everybody!

Yeah I forgot to mention the voodoo lounge, its very laid back as long as you're not there on Friday or saturday, i think are the real busy nights. Its on the roof of the RIO, its really cool, and i think its the best view in all of vegas. You're friend will love it.

What invariable happens is people's plans change once they get to Vegas. Unless, you have a set routine of things you do it's almost easier to go with the flow.
This is especially true when two or more people are in a group.
You did make a good decision in staying at the BC for a home base.

what a nice thing for you to do for your friends!

as far as seeing most of the mid strip casinos without spending too much on transportation - here is what i do - since you are mid-strip - decide how far you want to go north strip. take a cab there and then make your way back. same with south strip. i find that if we walk TO the places, we get tired. but if we walk BACK, we dont. i think its psychosomatic that we dont want to go back to our rooms, because we dont want to go to sleep, so therefore the walk back goes too fast.

or maybe we are just crazy.

have a great trip and best of luck with those slots!
