I will be headed to the South Point Casino for the first weekend of March Madness.

Has anyone been to their Poker Room recently and could provide a scouting report? Mostly locals?

    Thanks in advance.

I live near the South Point. It's the closest Casino to my house and where I place all my sports bets. Like the casino, hate the poker room. It's full of scroungers and dirt bags. Not the kind of experience I'd be looking for if I was on vacation. There is a free shuttle several times a day to several points on the strip and back. Just ask at the desk for times. Or take the bus or a cab. Go to the South or mid strip and play. If you'll be watching BBall just walk over to the room and see what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the scouting report, Sinatraatthesands. Unfortunately, my friends and I will be spending the majority of our 3 days in LV at the South Point. We only plan to make two short trips to the Strip for meals at Hash House A Go Go and BurGR. I will check out the room at the South Point, maybe even play a bit. But if the scroungers and dirt bags are as bad as you say, I may stick to craps, VP and BJ.

Sinatra is probably right, if I recall correctly they have a very good freeroll that requires 100 hours to qualify. These type of promotions bring out the cheapest, grumpiest and bottom feeder players trying to get in there hours. That being said during March Madness there might be enough tourist in town that it'll offset the local nits. If your very lucky it might even scare the nits away. It dosent hurt to try the room for yourself. Otherwise minus the nitty locals it's a pretty decent room.

One other thing which kind of sucks, craps is only 2x odds.

You would think right??? Won't happen though for several reasons. You hit it right on the head. I used to play there quite a bit during NFR and it was a blast. Last 2 years during NFR the Casino is standing room only but not one Cowboy hat in the poker room the entire week. These locals playing there are the worst of the worst as far as poker goes. i could go on and on about it but I'll just say this about the state of the room and why it is what it is. The guy who "runs the room" is pretty good but change is out of his control. The dealers and waitresses for the most part are all good.

Heres whats really really bad. The guy in charge of the room probably hasn't walked into the poker room in years. They take a promo drop and the promos they run haven't changed since I moved here and they are simply terrible. If you look at room traffic other than the top 3 rooms it is all driven by promos. The horrible promos, the way the stupid short sighted inbred regulars make tourists feel like outsiders in the first 10 minutes. They drove tourists out long ago and the few that make the mistake of walking in there are gone in 2 orbits. And the Casino is always full. The room should have 12+ tables going 5 nights a week. The guy in charge should have been fired for gross incompetence years ago. But that will never happen at the South Point. If your juiced in and from New York you have a job in upper managment for life. It's amazing the rest of the Casino isn't as screwed up as the poker room is.

Seriously?!? Not even 3x-4x-5x on a $10 table? Maybe 2x some of the time and 3x-4x-5x at other times of day?

Nope. It's a weak spot of South Point. And I've read they really sweat card counting too. But nearly every VP machine at quarters is 99%+, so I don't really get the reason behind the low odds with craps since they deal with the high variance of VP with small house edge.

What's the best poker room NEAR the South Point that lays 2-4, 3-6 or 4-8 limit games? In case I don't want to deal with the "scroungers and dirt bags" that Sinatraatthesands was warning me about. Green Valley Ranch? Mandalay Bay?

Thanks for the info. This is good news because, while I've not played much VP in the past, I have been practicing lately. I am planning to spend lots of time on the VP bartops, drinking while I score multiple 4oak, and maybe a royal!

Most in my group will appreciate the $5 BJ tables. I'm sure I will find my way to the craps table at some point. Ideally, $5 BJ and craps tables in the March Madness ballroom would be ideal...

You can find 2-4 or 3-6 at Flamingo which has an in house bad beat which is pretty high now if it didn't hit yet. 4-8 at Ventetian and Bellagio has 4-8 with a half kill. Mandalay bay doesn't offer limit only NL. Excalibur has a decent 2-6 spead limit game. GVR is too far from Southpoint.
