Wife and I are in Vegas August 2-4...we are looking at the Plaza or the El Cortez. What are some pro's and cons of both properties? Suggestions?

wife and I have stayed at both several times and both are good.

el cortez has nice quiet central air units
parking is good at either if you have a car
both had super comfy beds and clean rooms
plaza has a pretty decent pool el cortez has none
only complaint at el cortez is the tower rooms have real cheap motel quality doors and I was bothered steady by constant slamming doors
as far as food and casino everything is so close downtown I don`t find that a concern

I like the Plaza as the furniture is newer inside the rooms, new carpet in the casinos and there are better food options for on the go. Zaba's,, Hash House (with out a wait) and MC Donalds. It does however have a 10 dollar a day resort fee so that would be a negative.

I tend to drink at the Cal across the street for 2 dollar stella's so it is quite convenient

Not sure about El Cortez and resort fees, but its a nice casino located closer to the Bars on East Fremont Street. Plaza is still my Vote.

    Enjoy your stay

If I was solo, I'd stay at El Co but if I was with my wife I'd stay at Plaza. I like the BJ at El Co but the re-modeled rooms at Plaza are quite nice and you're closer to the action under the canopy.

Never actually stayed at either, but I did double book at the Plaza after the remodel and the new furniture etc was installed. I thought the Plaza rooms were very nice! My negatives... Plaza casino always seems dead, but, after the remodel, they have a good comfy sportsbook.

Elco, no real criticism, just that they are not under the canopy. Well, maybe one criticism, it always seems so smoky in there.

After further review, El Cortez has no resort fee, so that is an advantage to consider. If you can get a good rate at the plaza, it still get's my vote.

Great rate at the Plaza today via Hotels.com . They've got a code for 13% off, and it's fully refundable. Downside is full amount is charged when you book. Rate, including $10 resort fee, is less for when I booked (first week of October) than El Cortez tower room.

I've stayed at the "new" Plaza three times and El Cortez (tower) for a week in January. I agree with a previous poster that with my wife, it's the Plaza. By myself, close call. Rate would be the determining factor.

I actually enjoy table games at ElCo more. More colorful and more people playing. Their cafe is quite decent. The tower rooms are old but well maintained, and the mattress and bedding are good quality. I never had any issue with noise or slamming doors, but I think the average age of the people on our floor was about 110. No matter what people say about the casino, it's pretty much a dive. But if you like that sort of thing and the local character (which I do) it has an appeal that's hard to describe. Since my wife is with me and it'll still be pool weather, it's the Plaza. Not much fun to gamble there, but otherwise a nice deal for the money, even with the resort fee.

I have stayed at The Plaza SEVERAL times since the remodel and in the El Cortez Cabana suites once. I thought the Cabana suites were very nice, mod, cool. But I prefer the Plaza very a number of reasons. While the casino is much livelier at the Elco, the dealers dont speak English and the pit bosses sweat any action above red. They make me VERY uncomfortable. Play blackchips and they try to run you off. The Plaza, at least at the $25 table, dont care how much you bet. My average bet last trip was $445 per hand for 14 hours and I never got so much as a second look. The beds are much more comfortable at the Plaza. Not as many unsavory sort of characters at the Plaza. Both places are fun and you will enjoy them both, I have just gotten very comfortable at the Plaza.

From a room perspective the Plaza rooms are just as good as the El-cortez's better rooms, from the casino perspective there is no comparison. The Plaza is really, really dead, I mean you will walk through there and see almost no players, hundreds of slots being played by maybe 3 or 4 people and table games being played by almost no one. By contrast the el-cortez will be fairly busy all the time, not packed but there will be people around.

I would and have stayed at the el but the choice is yours, the plaza is fine if staying at an uncool place that nobody goes to doesn't bother you...not that the el-cortez is "cool" either, it's just different.

I don't understand why it is any big deal staying somewhere with à nice room at a good price downtown because of the casino when the next casrino is just steps away?

Enjoy the room and gamble next door

Elco is my favorite. Great mix of gambling, service, price, and honestly the staff is like a family. Low ceilings make it smokey but the VP makes it worth it. Rooms are decent in tower but the door criticism is accurate. Plus you'll get a discount at the flame and a free bottle of wine. Free parking, best coffee and great Thai food right across the street. I'd stay in the cabanas if you're with your wife. Plus no resort fee.
Plaza has nicer rooms, less smokey, never won anything there ever. Best chicken and waffles I've ever had at hash house ,and I can go to Roscoes whenever I want. I don't drink so I can't help u with that but at elco the drink lady comes around enough to start getting on my nerves.

El Cortez by a mile. Especially if you get a cabana suite.

I have stayed at both and will never stay at the Plaza again. The customer service was terrible. We kept finding (by stepping on) broken off nail heads in the carpet and when I took a handful down to the front desk, the guy just said "yeah, we are collecting a lot of those." Perhaps they should have been offering free tetanus shots with each stay. *shudder*

But I digress - If your two choices are only the El Co or the Plaza, then go with the El Co.

I just stayed at the El on Wed. and it was nice. It had plenty of people. My son had their Hamburger and beer for $5 and enjoyed it. It does have 8/5 BP and some 9/6 MS JOB. The Plaza has 9/5 JOB and 7/5 BP.

I've stayed at Plaza since remodel and also at each room category at the Elco. Both have been downtown home bases for me.
Considering the pros and cons of each, this is a tough call.
If you're going by room quality alone, do the Plaza. Like survivor said, how important is the casino anyway.
Another plus for the Plaza compared to the Cabana Suites, is that you take an elevator up to your room from the casino versus crossing a street from a casino.
