I'm already thinking about my next trip and really want to plan to stay DT. I am a solo female traveling don't know if that should make a difference. I always feel comfortable on the strip alone.

Other than going to FSE for a few hours, a couple of times, for some gaming I am unfamiliar with the properties.

Based on what I have read I feel GN might be a good choice but just don't know. Also, does anyone know if any play at the GN in NJ will carry over to LV comps etc? Only thing I want for sure is a pool to plop at and just relax.

I plan to poke around DT next week for a litle bit and go to 777 for lunch. I am wondering if I asked would any of the hotels let me see a room or two?

    Thanks:peace:

Golden Nugget is the closest you will get to the Strip downtown. Since you are just dipping your toe in the pool, sounds like a good choice for you.

You also might want to check out the Downtown Grand, opening later this month. Its just off of the FSE, and is supposed to be high-end (comparable to GN) from what I have read.

The Golden Nugget is the only hotel with a nice pool.

Plus, the GN is in a very "safe" location.

To me, downtown Las Vegas is a bit like the French Quarter of New Orleans -- you are safe on one street, but not safe two or three streets over.

    Besides, GN is very nice!

As long as you are under the canopy you'll be fine.

At night you don't want to be wandering off from under the canopy... its not really that bad, but you probably won't feel as safe as you would under the canopy.

Staying at Golden Nugget will have the most feel like one of the resorts on The Strip, plus its pretty nice overall and has nice rooms. The big lure for Downtown and the other properties is their rooms can usually be had super cheap (some as low as $15-20 a night) but you do get what you pay for.

As for comps: The Golden Nugget is pretty stingy overall with the comps. Its not hard to get free food comps out of them, but getting rooms up front can be pretty difficult so I would be thinking even if you gave them a lot of play in New Jersey it probably won't help in Las Vegas.

I'll be doing my first DT trip next Friday at GN. I'll try to post a trip report as far as the rooms go. When I've walked through the GN casino, and around the restaurants, I felt very at home as a Strip property person.

Happygirl - GN is what I would suggest as well, since you specified that a pool was important. You will pay about double there versus most of the other downtown properties, so bear that in mind.

If you're planning on doing your stroll to MSS to eat at 777 at night, I'd suggest tagging along with another group of folks walking there...or, do the Binions cut-through to the Cal, and walk across the walkway-bridge to MSS.
Ogden and both sides of Main on that stretch can be a bit sketchy at night (I would think) for a solo female.
Walk a few steps behind another group and I think you'll be fine.

As for previewing the rooms - if it's a weekday & they're not full, I don't see any reason why they wouldn't let you take a look. I'd call the front desk of the applicable hotels, in advance, just to be sure.

As posted by others earlier, I don't think you'll have any trouble at all under the canopy. Probably less than you would on the Strip at night.

I frequently go to Vegas alone (F late 30's) and my last trip I stayed Downtown at MSS. I didn't feel uncomfortable at all going from MSS to Fremont (I took the Binions/Cal route that others have told you about) at night - walked out of Cal, crossed the crosswalk, and was at the Binions door in minutes. I would definitely stay under the canopy at night though - while Downtown is fine, out of the bright lights it can be a little unsettling. :peace:

Definitely stay under the canopy at night. Even if areas outside of it are safe, they certainly feel sketchy. If you walk slightly away from the canopy even during the day time, you will see what I mean.

If you want a pool, the best is Golden Nugget. Their pool concept is one of the best in Vegas (though I have not witnessed it for myself).

However I find GN just a tad stuck-up for downtown. Generally I prefer the strip to DT though. But nothing beats the gaming in DT for me. Good comps are to be had at Boyd properties, Four Queens and Golden Gate.

Another very good hotel DT is the El Cortez Cabana Suites. I have stayed there on two separate trips, and would keep staying there. Love the boutique style hotel and it isn't but a very short walk to the canopy. I have never felt unsafe making that walk.

I agree Golden Nugget is very nice and since you want a nice pool, I think that's the place for you. Main Street is also very comfortable and safe-feeling but if you have to walk back there at night, it's a bit more challenging than GN. And I'm not sure what they have as far as a pool.

I just stayed at GN in one of the Rush rooms. It was very nice. I'd say a notch above Mirage. The room had a modern feel, nice bathroom. One night I hung out by the pool and had drinks, that was a great vibe, very relaxed.

For gaming I got into MSS. I really find it to be comfortable. But a woman by herself may not want to do that walk from Fremont late at night. It was safe but desolate.
