    My Trip Report

Note: This Trip report includes multiple destinations. You can skip past the non-Vegas info by scrolling down to the section dated July 2nd, *Drive to Las Vegas.

June 29th - We flew out of Orlando on SWA on our way to Phoenix with a plane change in Houston. This trip was planned over 150 days in advance. In our early planning we had no idea that the temperatures would practically be in the same digits! Once we landed in Phoenix we rented a car to drive to Sedona. The problem was that our rental car was Black with Black interior and those door handles got very hot!

Our first stop on the way to Sedona was to see the Montezuma Castle National Monument. This was our first time out of the car since Phoenix and it was so hot out that after only 20 minutes my face was beet red and my gal-pal ended up with heat stroke and was feeling ill so we high-tailed it over to the Cliff Castle Casino for some water and air conditioning. She won $100 and I lost $40. Back on the road our next stop was to see the little Mining Town of Jerome then finally we arrived in Sedona and checked into The Hilton Sedona Resort where we did some sightseeing that evening and the following day.

June 30th - We checked out of the Hilton and drove through the National Park to snap some pictures of the mountains and we visited the Chapel of the Holy Cross which was very cool and also drove through some nice communities with the Adobe style homes. Sedona was beautiful. I only wish it hadn’t been 120 degrees out! Our next stop was a short visit to Flagstaff then we were on our way to Williams where we checked into the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel.

July 1st - We boarded the Grand Canyon Railway and rode in style in the Luxury Parlor Class Caboose with the landing platform on the back that you could walk out onto while the train was in motion. Great for videos and photos! After a few hours we arrived at the Grand Canyon National Park which included a bus tour of the South Rim and some walking. But as expected it was very hot outside. After a long 10 hour day of “Riding the Rail” and sightseeing we were back in our hotel room and fell asleep very early.

July 2nd - On our way to Vegas baby!!! But first we had one more stop to make… The Grand Canyon Skywalk. There has been a lot of discussion on this board concerning the rough ride to get to the Skywalk and what I can report is they are currently in the process of paving the road. But for now it is still gravel with lots of construction going on. Once you get there and to the secondary spot on the tour you will have a much better view of the Grand Canyon so if I had to choose one location personally I’d choose the Skywalk over the South Rim - National Park. But I wanted to ride that train! I guess I should mention that the entire mountain top surrounding the Skywalk was on fire with helicopters and firemen all over the place. The smoke was getting thick and the fire was so intense that you felt the heat driving past it. But they kept the attraction open the whole time! The drive on the dirt road to the Skywalk had our rental car totally covered in dirt!

*Drive to Las Vegas - While we had seen the new Hoover Dam Bypass being built this was our first time driving over it. For this trip we decided to keep the rental car because it was too hot to walk anywhere so the first thing we did when we hit the Las Vegas city limits was to go through a car wash. There was no way we were going to drive through Wynn’s Valet looking like a couple of Desert Rats!

Wynn Check –in - Wynn gave me a great offer of 3 nights comp’d, a Buffet for 2 and $300 in Freeplay. Check in was quick and easy and we were given room 1244. It was close to the elevators which was perfect! We freshened up and went down to ZooZa Crackers for dinner. Afterwards we stopped by the Players Desk for my Freeplay and then we hit the slots. I guess in all the excitement, the long day of driving, us being tired and not in our right minds we proceeded to blow a $1K in about an hour! To make matters worse we were both playing the new video version of Double Jackpot when I decided to go try my luck on the old school mechanical 3 reel version. My gal-pal told me later that after I left a girl sat at my machine and immediately hit $800 on her first spin! I hate that! Oh well it was getting late anyway so we went to bed.

July 3rd – Being an early riser I got up and went to the gym and to the Spa. By the time I got back to the room my gal-pal was already up (which was a surprise to me) so we hit the Wynn Buffet. Afterwards we went up to the room, grabbed our belongings and headed off to M Resort where we played the NASCAR and WOF Slots for a few hours and left up a few hundred dollars each for the day. Next we went to Luxor and had lunch at T & T’s. It had been over a year since we set foot in Luxor so after looking around we played a giant Green Machine and the Monsters slots and later we both ended up on the video version of Double Jackpot again and we were holding our own until a talkative gal sat next to us and proceeded to tell us how much she had pulled out of the machine the day before. You know the type. We cashed out to go play the CSI slots and just a few minutes later that chatty girl moved down to the machine my gal-pal had been playing and damn it - she frigg’in hit for $800! THAT’s 2X this has happened! By now it was 5:30pm so we drove back to the Wynn to freshen up and then headed over to The Mirage to see Terry Fator. He put on a great show and we were very impressed! We played a little bit at the Mirage but nothing to write about so we drove back to Wynn ate a couple of Chocolate Éclairs and went to bed around 11:00pm.

July 4th – We had breakfast at Wynn’s Terrace Pointe Café and the syrup on the Belgian Waffle put my gal-pal in a sugar coma so she ended up crashing in the room for about 45 minutes haha. After she came-to we drove over to the Bellagio where she found a Batman machine to play. She was betting on the Joker and I was wandering around the casino pounding sand. When I went back to check on her she was up over $500 with no intentions of stopping. So I sat down and played Batman and lost so I guess crime really does pay.

Afterwards I left and kept wandering around not feeling any love from Bellagio and so I wanted to leave but by now she was playing a Spin & Win machine and was up close to $800.00! I sat down at a $5 Spin and Win and lost $100 in 20 seconds and was getting pissy. So, on my insistence we headed over to Aria. Needless to say this is the part of the trip where we started to get on each other’s nerves haha. Neither of us was in a very good mood at this point. When we got to Aria the air quality was so bad that her eyes started burning and watering so after playing a few games we went to Monte Carlo. Did they ever cleared up that SARS problem at Aria?

When we got to Monte Carlo we were both miserable and I admit I made a mistake leaving in the first place so we turned around and went back to Bellagio without even playing. Plus it had that damp construction smell in the air and my throat was feeling sore. We arrived back at Bellagio and decided to have lunch at Café Bellagio where I realized I hadn’t had my lucky grilled Cheese Sandwich on Rye w/ French Fries yet so I ordered that and she had a Tuna Salad Sandwich. After lunch she returned to her Spin and Win machine and I decided to play the Return of The Sphinx which was close by and something I had never played before. Soon I was up over $600 and she was up over $1,600 and was attracting a crowd of spectators so I guess my lucky Grilled Cheese Sandwich paid off for the two of us! No wonder we both missed out on those (2) $800 Double Jackpot wins! That kills me!

It was after 8:00pm and we were both feeling good about our wins and still on speaking terms haha but it was time to walk over to Caesars for the fireworks. Caesars as you can imagine was a mad-house and trying to get on a decent machine was practically impossible and most of the $1 machines were old and busted! She lost $300 and I lost $200 which is no surprise because neither of us really like the casino anyway. A little before 9:00pm we went outside and found a spot to watch the fireworks and I looked at the weather app on my phone and it was 108 degrees out. Good thing there was a breeze! The fireworks show was pretty good but there’s no comparison to New Years so ok now we’ve done the 4th Of July in Vegas and can say; Been there done that but never again… Especially in that heat!

Walking back to Bellagio was like herding cattle - noisy, unruly and slow moving. I’d say it took close to 30 minutes just to cross one skywalk. Back inside Bellagio someone had taken my gal-pals machine so I talked her into playing the Return of The Sphinx with me but she lost and decided to move back over to a different Spin and Win to be close to “her” machine until it became available again. By now I was hitting the $50 progressives left and right and was starting to get the Pyramid Bonuses and I saw her get up from her bank of machines to go play Double Jackpot which she lost on again. Funny, because Double Jackpot has always been good to us in the past…

By the time she returned her Spin and Win was free and I decided to cash out and see how she was doing. Next I sat down at an old Cleopatra machine with busted speakers that made it sound like a robot. I hit $300 on it and decided to go back over to the Return of The Sphinx where I hit a progressive for $500. I texted a picture to my gal-pal and she turned around from her chair to give me the OMG look haha! Later she came over to me and said she was going to cash all her tickets and I figured I’d stop when I got to $800 which only took a few more spins.

Happy Ending - So we cashed out her tickets and sat down at some newer looking slant top Cleopatra machines. While playing the machines I noticed she was on Cleopatra and I was on Cleopatra II and I was more interested in her machine commenting on how I like the music, voice and graphics better all the while mindlessly hitting my buttons when my gal-pal says look what did you win??? And I look and the points were racking up. By the time I did the math in my head a Hand-pay banner came across the screen and said I had won over $2,000.00! Damn! I knew I should have eaten that Grilled Cheese Sandwich sooner haha! This was officially my first W2G form so I gladly gave my info and SS number along with a tip to the attendant! It was getting late and we had and early flight so we called it quits. This was a fun, hot and slightly different Vegas trip with a unexpected “Happy Ending” and best of all... We came home winners!

Thanks for the trip report. I enjoyed it.

(I think Aria had a bout of Legionnaires, not SARS, and its all good now.)

Very nice trip report. I'm glad you finally hit! Your 2 $800 misses are exactly why I don't hang around any machine I've put money into:) It's bad enough when I walk by and it is still showing what someone hit on it after I left.
