    My Trip Report

    Folks,

I've got a lot of work to do in order to bring a decent report to you, and many more pictures to process, but let me just toss you a few shots from my first night at Vegas -- I'll get to work on the TR and more pictures! So, let's dive into the first batch of pictures:

    Mandalay Bay:

    Strip shots:

    Fatburger:

    Polo Towers:

Surf Barfet, the sign in as fine shape as the food:

Monte Carlo, with the CVS Pharmacy in front:

    Harley Davidson Cafe:

I adjusted that one to make the sign relatively straight -- obviously, that made the stuff in the background askew!

Those pics are amazingly crisp...what kind of camera did you use and how did you set it? I can never get mine to look that good.

    Mikey,

Thanks for the kind words! I used a Canon Pro1, the top of Canon's current "Powershot" line. i.e., this is something lesser than their "digital SLR" line. You can read more about it here, amongst many other reviews you could find elsewhere:

    http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canonpro1/

Also, I used a tripod -- indeed, I trudged around with the camera on a tripod for several hours, and that's what really makes "night shots" like these possible. Plus, my previous trip to Vegas (two years ago) really got me interested in "getting serious" about photography, and I've spent the time in between trips finding "the right camera for me," and then really learning how to get the most out of it. I'm quite happy with these shots, and I've got many, many more to work through and show to you folks -- so "stay tuned!"

In the meantime, here's another shot. From atop the Eiffel Tower, someone pried their eyes away from the Strip, turned around, and shouted towards everyone to look over to see the moon rising from the west:

    Hey Thoots...

Thanks for the info... But one thing-

I just checked all the almanacs and encyclopedias I had, and even the NASA website, and the earth didn't rotate backwards anytime during your trip to Vegas....The moon always rises in the east. Just like the sun.

    Awesome pic, though!

    Mikey :D

    Mikey,

Oh, re-reading, I see you asked about camera settings, so let me say a couple of words about that:

My camera will go down to ISO 50, so that's what I used for everything -- below that, and you start getting "noise" quite a bit. This is where a trule DSLR will kick the pants off of my camera -- they can use higher ISO's without such a loss in quality.

Also, most cameras will default to a lower-numbered "f-stop," even on "landscape" type shots like this. So, I used either full manual mode or "aperture priority" mode to keep my camera in a more landscape-friendly "focus to infinity" setting of f/8. At least, I did so as much as possible.

So, those would be the settings I used -- hope this helps!

    Mikey,

Yeah, you're right -- I have a tendency to get turned around on east vs. west on the strip!

Wow those are awsome pictures. I just bought a Canon Powershot S70, it's the first canon that I've owned...I am so excited to play with it.

    Thanks for sharing.

Wow. Just fantastic shots. Publication quality, for sure.

Canon is making better and better equipment. My dad is a professional photographer, and after years of using only Hasselblad and Nikon cameras, he just bought a Canon digital and is very happy with it.

I use a Canon S400, which suits my needs but could never produce the quality of these shots. Thanks for sharing them.

Thanks for the great pics Thoots! Some of the best shots I've seen. Those are real impressive to a point and clicker like me.

I think I need a new camera and a bigger monitor [IMG]
