Is there a nice place in the area for a picnic? I know that doesn't sound very Vegas ish, but I'm looking for a change of pace.

There is a rest area right outside Red Rock Canyon - has bathrooms & picnic tables. We ate lunch there after a morning drive & some short hikes in Red Rock. Of course Red Rock has some picnic tables too. (we had brought lunch in a cooler with us)

Spring Mtn Preserve might be another choice.

Red Rock or Spring Mtn Ranch nearby. Further out is Floyd Lamb Park or Mt Charleston, on the east side there is Valley of Fire, the Wetlands Park, or parks like Sunset or Hemenway Valley Park outside Boulder.

We are thinking about doing this same thing on our upcomming trip (if we don't have to cancel it  ). We've been to Red Rock Canyon and Mt Charelston before but haven't picniced at either. We are thinking about doing some hiking as well as a picnic at Mt Charleston. I'll let you know if we do and how it went.

I would go with Mt Charlston

Cooler up there because of the elevation.
