Yeah I doubt this would've been paid out in Vegas since they would verify the win beforehand. Considering all the slot manufacturers have offices/HQs in the city, it's not an issue for this to get done compared to BC.

Yeah in Nevada this wouldn't have got paid. Glad it did there though!

I also heard this discussion on the radio. It's not difficult to fly experts in to check the problem. The casino knew it was wrong and could have refused to pay, they just chose to do it. I'm sure they didn't do it until Konami agreed. These casinos aren't turning the kind of money that Vegas ones are.

It was supposed to be kept secret until a leak took it to the news.

Our Canada wide lottery once tracked down a multi million dollar winner and paid her even though she didn't realize it or have her ticket anymore.

    All wins are tax free.

For Canadians winnings from gambling (casino, lottery, track betting, etc) are tax free, but for Americans gambling up in Canada they have to pay a withholding tax the same way Canadians pay it in the USA.

Also, in the USA the hand pay target is a straight $1200 no matter what slot or video poker machine you are playing, but in Canada hand pays can occur at lower limits: at my local casino hand pays on penny slots occur as low as $250 and $500 for nickle machines and then $1000 for quarter and dollar machines.

The big difference is: because gambling is a long term losing proposition Canada doesn't see wins as "income" - if you have a big win this trip eventually, in the long term, your losses will offset those wins. But in the USA they don't look at the long term or let you roll over losses from year after year, so they classify short term wins as "income" and then you have to manually offset the wins with losses through your tax return.

    O
Americans are responsible to report the win to their government. Canada doesn't withhold or report the win to the U.S. govt. There a strong chance that the winner might forget to report once back in the US. :ssst:

I guess "MALFUNTION VOIDS ALL PLAYS AND PAYS" don't apply in Canada. Good for them.

That was very good PR to pay the winner. They did not have to .
