    My Trip Report

    Hi All,

My first trip report. I have read so many that decided I must attempt! Booked Paris 4/18-4/25 and one night during the week at Golden Nugget.

This was a trip I had planned based on being out in Vegas last Sept. by staying 3 nights at Paris and getting a $500 voucher towards next airfare. Sorry never wrote a tr for that one, but it was totally lose lose lose.

Late last year my office was told of its' eminent demise the end of this May so I knew I had done a good thing by getting that voucher as who knows when we will be able to return.

My DH and I decided that we would treat ourselves to 1st Class on US Airways out of DFW and I booked in January for our April trip but waited till the day before to request the upgrade for $100 each. When I first called the travel agency affiliated with Harrahs for booking, was concerned I would not be able to book the hotel for comped nights, but was able to get 5 nights comped and paid for 2 at the Paris. Wahoo !!! Better than putting it all on Black!
So anyone wondering about any of the fly back promotions I would say do it!

I would not have minded staying at Bally's which would have been cheaper but this was my husband's second time out there and he felt he would be more comfortable at Paris so no biggy as Friday was $80 and the following Saturday was $90.

Which reminds me, I really want to thank all of you who participate in this forum as I have learned so much and believe me I almost felt like an old-timer this time, only my third time there! I had purchased the POV so between the few coupons we used from that and using our points this trip accumulated with the help of the Total Rewards card. Not counting our gambling budget, tips or the touristy stuff we bought, came to less than $800 for the two of us for a whole week. I think I did good LOL.

Our flight was just fine. As I said we were treating ourselves so I had booked Lucky Limo which I would recommend to anyone and Paul our driver was there waiting for by now the almost tipsy twosome. We had decided ahead of time we would just check our bags and head straight to Gustav's Bar. So we did! Immediately ordered another Bloody Mary and proceeded to pay for it abundantly by feeding the lousy pay VP JOB machine. We knew the pay was lousy but had figured we were going to enjoy ourselves no matter what Harrah's put before us! Within 20 minutes my DH had hit 2 four of a kind. That was the start of at least 25 or more he continued to hit until Thursday when the Gambling Gods decided it was time to take their revenge on him.

Checked in, no long line, this was probably after 6pm and of course no complimentary upgrade so went up to rm 470 smoking with view of Bally's towers and a smidgeon of the fountains. Heck we did not care, we were in Vegas Baby and we got the fountains LOL.

Based on comments from other posters, we had brought our own little coffee maker I purchased at Walgreens for under $10 bucks and we each bought a Paris mug on sale for $8 so I would buy a carton of milk for my coffee and a couple of danish each night before heading up... ah the life! You know it was fun..not doing anything was fun. Just waking up in the room was fun!

Sunday we took a walk over to PH our first time there. Found Gem Tiles and started to play it. I have found a free website and like to play it there. So tried it and although it did not hit like on the free site (isn't that always the way) was not totally disappointed. My twenty bucks lasted awhile and think I came out a buck or two ahead. Also made one of the bonus rounds on the Dean Martin slot. He sang to me, sigh!

One thing I liked about PH was the selection of music. For a couple in our late 50's ( called by our sons, Old Hippies.. what do they know ! ), we enjoyed it. Stayed a few hours then took a short walk through Miracle Miles Shops but must admit, I am not into the shopping scene so soon left and went back to home base to just chill.

Neither of us are real foodies. I had checked out some of the restaurants doing the Price Fix selections and kept Kokomo at Mirage in mind for $39 which is really very reasonable as DH is really a steak and potatoes kind of guy, but we never made it there. Had several breakfasts at the Cafe St. Louis in Paris..all charged to the room and tips in cash thanks to recommendations by some of you which works better when checking out and using your points. One thing I would not recommend ordering there is the Fried Rice..it was simply awful and very greasy, but for eggs and bacon not a bad place. And we were too lazy to walk to Ellis Island so will have to save that for another time.

Mostly concentrated on VP JOB, switching sometimes to Bonus but never did have the tenacity to stick it out with DDB...that just drained me. We also would sit sometimes in the Champagne Slots room to play one credit of $5 bucks a hand because in there it is 9/6...and again he of course did hit at least 3 if not 4 4OAK!...by now I am whining as Saturday evening and all of Sunday I would lose lose lose on the VP then go over to my new most favorite slot and wish I could remember who had mentioned it here they like to play it because White Orchid is my new Goddess! She would give me back most of what I lost on VP so I could try again. Made sacrifices to her repeatedly! It was fun! She mostly smiled upon me the whole time we were there LOL and would allow me to lose my allotted bankroll at least twice. All I ask of anyone else who approaches her is be kind, tell her hello for me and I will never forget her!

Monday we took the shuttle over to the Rio, our first time there. I rather liked the casino and don't think I would mind staying there at all. Found a bar to sit at and once again started on the lousy pay VP. By this time I am getting leery of the prospect of losing my bankroll for the day quickly, so would just play a hand every few minutes while listening to the music and people watching and of course listen to that lousy (not really) guy sitting next to me telling me he got, yes another 4OAK. Alright allready with beating me at this game! I mean I was happy for him and very very grateful that at least one of us was hanging on to their bankroll but jeesh it's not like I came here to just lose you know, it was amazing!

But I digress because about 20 min. later I got 4 to the Royal and Wahoooooo I hit it! Sat there for at least ten minutes in the glory of it all and did not want to hit the button to deal again. Yes, my bankroll was now intact! Take that you old 4OAK loser you! It was great I tell you, my very first!! Sure improved the whining on my part lol.
So we played a little more then I decided to check out some of the other games and actually got something from WOZ for a change, had fun on Monopoly and got the dedicated vp only player to play it awhile as well. Also must admit walked over to an Alien game..stuck a twenty in and hit max bet just before I realized max was the full twenty..oops and OMG, but it hit and gave me a hundy thank you very much!! Cashed that baby out quick!!

We decided to walk over to Gold Coast. He was not that impressed with the casino itself, but we both really enjoyed listening to the live Dixie jazz band that was playing. It is always a pleasure to hear good musicians. That put a plus in my book for the Gold Coast. Can't remember how long we stayed there but we had the coupon for buy one get one at the Palm's buffet so made our way over there. Very strange casino or is it just me. Rather dark and of course all I did was lose on the vp, but found the I Dream of Jeannie slot which immediately hit a couple bonus rounds for me. "Oh Master" , Yes !", ... she suspiciously sounded like she was having way more fun all by herself!

Had lunch at the buffett...not terrible, but not great. Definitely not worth more than what we paid for it and then sat at the bar to finish up our time there playing vp. Where he proceeded to, well you know by now, get several 4OAK. Had a nice conversation with a local woman there who informed me we could use the points we had accumulated to purchase cigarettes so we saved a couple bucks doing that and used up those points.
Left soon after and made the by now long trek back to the Rio. For some reason walking back there was a real hike for me. Being over weight, having had several drinks and cigarettes had nothing to do with it I tell you!!
Make it back to the Rio, by now I am like Mildred Natwick in Barefoot in the Park ..: " I feel like we've died and gone to heaven - only we had to climb up".

He finds the vp and I go on a search for the Goddess. Found her and hit for $57 on an eighty cent bet. Thank you Lady! Bowed to the goddess then we used a 2 for 1 coupon and his points for the dinner buffet there. That was a good meal we both enjoyed. Shuttled back to home base and called it a day!

On Tuesday we decided to take it easy and after breakfast and him getting a couple more 4OAK on vp ( I kid you not), we took a walk over to the Bellagio..although some of the personnel there are rather snobby, the one bartender we had this time comes to mind, last time we were there we spent quite a bit of time sitting at the bar that is close to the small piano lounge and really enjoyed ourselves as well as the lady bartender we had then. She makes very good Bloody Marys.

We strolled around, both checking out the Poker Room as we both play quite a bit online and of course chickened out when we saw the games with open seats. So we sat at a bank of vp machines not too far from the North entrance. I was sitting at the machine closest to the aisle when I hear some guy actually yelling a person's name. Thought how strange someone would feel ok to yell in the Bellagio but did not look to see who was doing the yelling. A short time later this person walks past me and turns around to look behind him. It was Phil Ivey..cool! Not too long after that we saw Paul Wasicka walking through with a couple other guys so figured something was probably going on with them all but never did find out what.
I convinced my DH who is not at all into any type of slot game to sit at an Ebay game with me and guess who came out the winner. Not me. I then got him to sit at a Lobstermania slot for a short while but he never did get the bonus and soon quit. Neither one of us was doing all that well on any game we played. I would switch it up on vp from DW to Bonus and back to JOB but nothing worked so after a few hours just went back to home base so I could worship the Goddess and he could find a few more 4OAK's.

Wednesday was our trip downtown. This was his first time and my second there so we decided to take the Deuce for the scenic route. The bus never got overly crowded and we enjoyed the trip there. I had considered booking at MSS but figured he would get the full force of being downtown by staying on Fremont so I had booked online w/ Golden Nugget.
Now I have read both good and bad about this place so was not sure what to think. I would say it was not worth the extra money spent to stay in the North Tower nor the VIP booking..so lesson learned! Also the girl at the front desk wanted to give me a hard time about the coupon book that came with the pkg we got..she called someone else to confirm and made a snide remark to him about how I had made a change to the booking..Tuff chit lady!! We got it though..also she tried to lecture me about what comes with online pkgs. She was not rude but almost borderline rude, which seemed to coincide with some of the things I have read about this place since Lawry's bought it. Then proceeded to tell me no room was available yet, which was no big deal to us as we had gotten there late morning, but she suddenly found a room on the second floor. I did not care as long as it did not face Fremont so we took it.

So we go up to the room and by now I am in somewhat of a pissy mood. The room was just fine. One thing I will say about the place is the bed linens and towels were first quality. They really were nice, much nicer than what you get at Paris. We are not in the room two minutes when a Maintenance guy knocks on the door saying he was there to change the air filters but he decided he would come back another time. Ok, no problem, then DH goes to open the drapes to see what is out there and the window is open. This leads right out to a an easy place for someone to be walking along the rooftop right outside the window and just pop right into your room. I called maintenance immediately and now because my dander is up and I am getting suspicious almost made them change our room. In the end we did stay in the room, someone came within 5 minutes and screwed the window back shut. We put everything in the safe and as far as I can tell all was fine. But I do not think I would ever stay there again. It just did not feel right.

Took a walk over to the 4Queens and played JOB there a bit. Seemed to me their machines hit a little more frequently than on the strip and I actually got a few 4OAKs... at this point I can't even remember how many my sweet DH has gotten even though I know he has easily doubled mine. But I can't whine anymore he tells me because of my Royal..hmmmpf! Played a bit at Binions then headed back to the Nugget for dinner. Used the POV 2 for 1 coupon for the dinner buffet. The coupon book from the casino is only for breakfast and lunch..lordy! So we felt we had it over the Nugget on that one and the buffet was quite good. After dinner played some Multi Strike and was able to get back most of my bankroll for the day when I hit four sixes at 4x pay. Cool!

Warning inserted here...you know how you have read about sticky buttons..well I knew the one button all the way on the left of the one machine I was playing was sticking and was dealt four tens..can no longer recall what the x pay was but it was pretty decent and you know I could not understand why only the 3 tens showed after I hit deal!!
So yep, I knew it and blew it!!

Once the Fremont Show started took a walk around and listened to a cover band that was playing for awhile. They did a decent job on a Santana and Doobie Brother's song. But after awhile the noise just got to us so we went back to the bar and soon finished the evening with one last drink and off to our dubious room.

Next morning I was up early so played some more Multi-Strike but never got anywhere with it so soon quit once I was finally able to catch a CW for my morning coffee. We then used the Nugget coupon for the breakfast buffet thank you very much!
After we ate we checked out and checked our bags at the desk. Decided to walk over to MSS as I have never been there but have read about it and also knew about the scratch cards and the 9/6 JOB at the bar. Again thanks to the many who post here on the easiest way to get there as well as the other info about the place. I would totally recommend someone checking this place out. It is worth it for the antiques alone! Wow that guy sure knew how to pick out quality stuff. All the old slot machines, the paintings. Real tin ceilings like I remember as a kid in the bars my parents would take me with them to. Bead board in the bathrooms..and seeing the old player pianos with the full band inside was really neat! The bartender was talking to us a bit about the place when I got 4OAK so I was the first to receive a $2 scratch off. Think we accumulated 5 of them total. All worth $2. Still a lot of fun. And I found the Wheel Poker Machine I have read about on one of the sites . I was always curious as to what effect a wheel for a video poker machine would be....oh boy that one is a good one and now that I know, I need to go back there again for those machines alone! DH got at least 3 4OAKs on just one machine..I was happy getting one!

Little did I know that the dear man I married almost 35yrs ago had begun on his losing streak..hehehehehe Ok, I don't really mean the hehehe but being the competitive woman he married, well, almost. He admits to his losing streak beginning while we were still downtown, but that is as far as he will go..he says " why be the bearer of bad news"...my poor sweet man!

Went back to get our bags from the Nugget and cab it back to the strip. But first a stop at the Deli in Binions to bring a sandwich back to the hotel for lunch/dinner. I had read that many of the regulars who go down town say the Deli in Binions is worth a stop. We had the 2fer coupon out of the POV so each bought a sandwich w/ their potato salad and had them bag it up. Oh yeah that place is good!! Like I have read, all fresh ingredients. Well worth the stop! Caught a cab just on the side of Binions back to the strip. Our cab driver told us how Benny Binion used to give all the cab drivers a turkey at Thanksgiving and how his daughter was too scared to do anything decent with the casino and had let it run down. I do recall the short visit I had there about 5yrs ago it seemed very tired looking then but now it seems to be in much better shape.

Back at home base we ate our late lunch and chilled in front of the tube for awhile then walked over to Bally's for some more punishment on VP. My DH admits he lost most of his bankroll there on JOB while I would switch around to BP and of course I did find my goddess there, but she was not in a giving mood. So I gave up. We ended up back at the bar in Paris for awhile when I decided I was going to sit either at a Let it Ride or Tx Bonus Holdem table and got him to sit with me. There was only an opening at the last $5 TX Holdem table so I asked if anyone minded two newbies sitting with them. The other two people were quite nice and we sat for awhile trying to figure out how best to play. Since we both play hold em we know the game, although I suppose that may be presuming a lot! We did hold our own for awhile but both ended up down and watched while one guy hit bonus hands at least three times that I recall and built up a nice chip stack. I left the table before my hubby did and wandered around a bit playing a few slots with no real hits on any of them. Hubby soon found me and we decided to call it a night with one last full day of play left before we got up on Saturday morning to head back home.

Those of you who use the POV may have noticed I have not mentioned using any of the match play coupons while downtown...confession..we were just too chicken. Neither of us have sat at a Black Jack table and I did mention it a few times, but could not get him to go along with me on it to use them. But by Thursday evening I was finally able to get him to realize that what the heck did we have to lose but the bankroll we already had lost and all we had to do was tell the dealer at what ever table we decided to sit at we were virgins! I have since sent the rest of our coupons to my friend as she and her hubby will definitely use them and they will not go to waste!

Friday, our last full day arrives and my DH has turned into "Morbid Moody Man" from losing most of his bankroll the day before. Boy do I know the feeling..you get there, are all excited about playing and the possibilities and win a few then lose lose lose. It can get depressing. So I decided what we needed was a walk. I had something in mind (poker room) so we strolled our way to the Flamingo and used his points for breakfast. Was not bad for the money we spent and I like sitting in their buffet room looking out the window at the gardens and flamingos.

Finished up then strolled up to the casino. He was not quite so Moody Morbid (as I was calling him), but I could tell it was still bothering him. So I headed us to the Poker Room and before he could even say " well maybe", I had us both signed up for a limit table. We sat at a full table and I could tell that at least three of the people there were locals, two had little to no poker experience and the rest of us had at least some small clue lol. I really enjoyed it..was even dealt Aces one hand which were cracked thank you very much by my not so morbidly moody sweety so I picked up a quick hundy on that hand. I played for about an hour and a half quitting after getting a flush on the turn and taking a hand down out of the big blind. I left him to play for probably another hour more while I wandered around sitting at a few machines and keeping the Flamingo in business.

We left not too long after he finished playing and he admitted that even though he ended up down some, it was a lot of fun. Success !! So we headed back to our room to chill and pack up for our leave the next morning.

Once rested up we walked back over to Bally's. You could tell it was a Friday evening..all the boys in their suit coats and sunglasses and all the girls wearing well their "expose their wares" best. Ah to be young again..it was rather cute!

We both played some VP, I found a Multi Strike game but all it did was eat my money and clamor for more. So we decided that since we were "experienced" lol we would sit at another TX Bonus Holdem table. I lasted about eight hands and won two before I turned to him and said I was going to find another table because I just was not feeling the love.

So I strolled around and found an empty seat at a Let It Ride table. Now I have played it for free online but that still does not mean I knew what I was doing..so I promptly put my chips on those three little circles in front of me and put that dollar chip in the dollar thingy but neglected to put a chip in the bonus circle..
You know what's coming right? First hand I am dealt 3 count 'em three Aces! The whole table erupts when everyone realizes I did not play the bonus. Oh well live and learn like the dealer said..Second hand I am dealt two Jacks this time with the bonus played. Third hand I am dealt a flush..Yes thank goodness I played the dang bonus! I quit after that, could not handle anymore LOL and told all at the table that is what happens when you don't know what the hell you are doing!
So I went and sat at one of the bars where hubby found me slowly playing the machine while I nursed a drink and told him my sad tale. Who Knew! Finished up our drinks then walked back to Paris end our last night there. I went to pay respects one last time to the Goddess (and I do mean pay!) then we sat at Gustav's for awhile slowly feeding the machine and drinking in the sights and sounds.
We then went to check out and get a receipt for our stay before heading up to the room.

Saturday morning and Ray Barengo from Lucky Limo right on time to take us to the airport. Would highly recommend him anytime. Wonderful driver and great story teller! Our flight back got us home about twenty minutes quicker due to a nice tail wind and that was that~

Some observations. We always tipped everyone well and the CW's downtown especially seemed to appreciate it.
Would go downtown again anytime we both really enjoyed it.
You could tell that although it seemed pretty busy in the evenings the bar staff were willing to tell you that business overall was down. Harrah's wants to renegotiate their contracts so that is not a good sign.
Maid service was excellent, we even got a thank you note for our thank you note one morning!
This time when I went it was to purposely not try and do everything but take it easy and I think I enjoyed it more that way.
My DH wants to go back and play some more Poker hehehehe Me too!!
On the weekends we fill up the coffee cups we bought there and sit and tell each other we will always have Paris.

Thanks again to all who post here and give their observations. It helped me to feel I knew the place better.

    Sticky buttons

Ah, those sticky buttons. Once was dealt a straight flush on a hundred play penny game playing max. One of those buttons stuck! Figured I lost about $150. Pays to pay attention, and oh yeah, not drink too much.

    HI,
If I recall correctly, stand in front of the cashiers cage and then face directly opposite of it..there was four of them right on the end of the second row walking away from the cage down the big aisle that will also lead to the rest rooms behind the cage.

Hope that was a decent explanation for you

thanks for the trip report, sounds like you had a lot of fun!

If you're ever on a machine that doesn't hold a winner. Stop, call keys, and they can open the machine and see the hand you were dealt. Most of the time they pay you anyway. I've seen this twice, once in Reno and once in Vegas.

In Vegas, it was at Caesars, back by Cleopatra's Barge. They used to have 50 cent single line video poker. I was sitting next to a fellow, with his wife next to him watching his play, and then me. All of a sudden, they start laughing and clapping, I look up to see the machine had dealt him 4 aces with a deuce. It was DDB. $1000 win! Then....I hear them upset, confused, and see the machine paying him off for $200. They're confused at why they didn't get the original $1000. I see what happened, he only saved the 4 aces, and let the deuce go on the draw. So it went from bonus aces ($1000) to regular aces ($200)

I told him not to touch anything, but to hit the change button. I told him to let keys know that he had the deuce, but it wasn't saved (why it wasn't saved didn't seem to be an issue). He did what I said, they backed up and saw the win, and handpayed him the difference. He was grateful to me, and handed me $50. Cool.

Congrats on your first RF. I'm still trying to catch my first. I agree with you about the Palms; for a place that's supposed to be hip I found it dark and a little dreary. I think PH has a better vibe; though the drink service seems to be nonexistant when I'm playing there.
