    My Trip Report

    Day 1

Welcome to the latest installation on my quest for glory and the royal. The purpose of the trip was for rest and relaxation, maybe some spa time, a show or two. Oh come on, the real purpose was to drink enough to not remember how many drinks we had and to win so much that we had to use that metal thing that they put in the closet with all those number thingys on it. I think it might be a phone. Oh yeah, and to hit a royal. My wife and bro in law are joining me on this quest. Off we go 8am flight out of...... who cares, we get there and rent a car and arrive at our French home away from home for the next 4 nights. We were comped for the stay for a regular room, but, the ole $20 dollar trick worked like a charm and we got a fancy red room. Up to the rooms and back down to the casino in a heartbeat.

I saw the idea of Slot golf somewhere on this board and thought it was an excellent way to start the trip. We may have revised the rules a bit $10 per person per hole, max 10 spins. Apologies to the originator of the game, if you are reading this please feel free to correct and/or take credit. For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, here's the general idea. Object of the game is to get the lowest score, just like golf. Your score is established once you win anything on a slot pull. You start by inserting 10 bucks. If you spin 10 times with no win then you're done. We called this "$hi!!ing the bed" or STB. Any funds left on the machine goes into the pot. The pot is spilt at the end into percentages, in our game it was 50/30/20. For this game we played 3 holes at Paris , then moved to pHo, then MGM. We sprinkled in other random individual gaming in between it all. Well, I suck at slot golf. I STB, all over myself, and everything around me. Bro in law won, wife, then me. The pot only barely breached the startup costs as no big wins were hit. It was pretty good fun and it was nice to know that you would at least get some of the pot at the end.

For dinner we hit Gonzalez y Gonzalez at NYNY. This is the second trip in a row with the wife where we ate there on the first night. It was beyond good, a little pricey, but who cares if it was that good. I had chicken quesadilla, which had a spectacular tangy seasoning. Couple coronas, chips and salsa, etc. and we're back on our quest. From NYNY went to the Monte Carlo and then took the tram to Bellagio. As we had started drinking early I was well over the beer limit to play craps. I find that my desire to play craps increases by about 10% with each beer. Once I get past 50%, I start thinking about playing. Over 70% and I need to play. Anything over 100% and I'll play in a dark alley with a bunch of fingerless bums. At this point in the night I was well over the bums stage. We roll up to a Ballys $10 table and off we go. I'm holding on at first, a bit up, a bit down, then dice are passed to probably the most normal looking couple you would ever see. Just picture a dude in his 40s and his wife. No fancy clothes, no fancy bling, collared shirt and jeans. The husband starts with a couple #s here and there and then a point hit on 10. He hit a couple more points before sevening out and my chip stack looks pretty substantial at this point. Dice get passed to his wife and she starts hitting #s also. At some point she hit a couple 6's and the point was a 6. I've always wanted to be that guy so I say "25 dollar hard 6" and try to throw my greenie right where it needs to be. Boxman catches it before I could determine the accuracy of my toss. A couple rolls later, 3 and 3, hard 6. Sweet. Girl keeps rolling and establishes 6 again as the point. No way this can hit again, but, only thing I can say is "two way hard 6" as I throw another green and its good friend Mr. Red. A couple more rolls,10,4,5,10, then another 3 and 3. Wow, and dealers are in on the fun as well now. The girl finally sevens out and the table provides the obligatory applause. I, of course, stay about 3 people after I should but still left the table with a good chunk of change. Feeling the full force of at least 56 beers, and the east coast time, I decided to retire for the night. I somehow remember two numbers - 2866 and 2:23. I'm hoping one is the room number and one is the current time. Not a bad start to the trip, 4 OAK count = 6, royal flush count = 0. Up overall

    More to come.....

    Sounds like fun.

    Day 2 Saturday

Wake up around 7:30 and not feeling as bad as I thought I would. It may have been the adrenaline kicking in from just being in Vegas less than 24 hours. It may have been the constant dreams that I had of all the royals I would hit this day. It may have been that craps run from last night. Not sure and don't care. I could've easily started drinking for breakfast, but, I decided to go for the marathon and not the sprint. The plan for the day was to hit Claim Jumper for lunch and hit Green Valley Ranch and a couple other locals along the way. We also wanted to get back to the Strip relatively early as we expected quite a show on the strip for the Saturday Halloween festivities. We decided to hit the Ranch first as it was only about 10am once we got moving. I felt obligated to go back to the Ranch because of the great debacle of last year's trip where I made the wife leave a hot craps table there because I thought I lost my money somewhere. Turns out the cash was back in the hotel room and I have yet to be fully forgiven for this. So we roll in to the ranch around 10:30ish and its as I remembered it. Sort of like a strip property except for the better vp odds, lower table limits, and higher percentage of chain smoking grandmas. In other words this was heaven.

We really liked the Ranch and proceeded to play our second round of slot golf. This one would only be for $5 per hole so it was properly named mini-golf. We found a nice grouping of dollar slots that worked just fine for this. Literally after the first spin, Dorothy, the friendly slot attendant appeared out of no where. "If you sign up for a players card, it's 72x normal point accumulation for today and you get a free $3 and you get a discount at the restaurants and you get a.... I had to cut her off as I thought she was going to explode. "Ok, I'll get one" I replied. She took my license and literally ran away. As I saw her running away to the distant land of card making I thought to myself. I just gave my license to someone I just met 2 minutes ago and before I could ask a question she ran away with it. She was wearing a GVR employee outfit right? I struck up a conversation with Irv who was nearby and definitely looked like he worked there, or he just liked cleaning out ashtrays and wiping down the machines for fun. I asked Irv if he knew that woman Dorothy that took my license. His reply was "I've never seen her before in my life." And he let out a chuckle. I took the chuckle as a positive sign. About 5 minutes go by and no sign of Dorothy, 10 minutes and now I was starting to question myself. Luckily, I wasn't going insane and Dorothy finally appeared after like 15 minutes. There was a problem with the something or other that took longer than usual. i was thinking maybe it was the engraver that had to engrave my name on the card manually like they do with the Stanley Cup.

Anyways, mini golf was working much better this time for the pot, but, not so much for me. I continued to STB all over the place to finish 3rd once again. 3rd place sounds better than last, right? With golf done we decided that we were having too much fun to leave the Ranch so we decided to just hit the food court for lunch. Per usual I hit the pizza joint there. Bro hit the Fatburger and proceeded to take down a XXL burger which was made of 2 oversized patties and was probably enough to feed a small family in insert your favorite third world nation here. After lunch we hit some tables until I had to take another run at a royal. No luck of course, but, was able to hit a couple more 4oak for fun.

Everyone started hitting the tired wall around 2pm so we headed back to Le hotel du vp odds terrible. The wife chose to relax down at the pool while I took a quick rest in the room. After regrouping we started traveling north up the strip. It didn't take long for us to start seeing the barrage of costumes. Zombies everywhere, saw the teenage mutant ninja turtles, and of course a lot of the "I'm a little too large for this slutty outfit" costumes. We played a little everywhere and settled in for a couple hours at Harrahs. More pounding away for the royal and even more pounding at the coronas. Ate dinner at the crazy combined Chipotle Chinese Pizzeria between Harrah's and casino royale. The place was like 200 degrees in there. The chipotle line was literally through the door and not moving so we had the pizza. It wasn't that good, but, everything tastes better with a bunch of coronas. After dinner we meandered back down towards home and was doing my best to pay for the Linq, depositing my money at all the hot spots along the way. Finally, get back to BallysParis and I remember that I'm doing pretty well at Ballys so far so I head to the VP pit over by keno. The machines were moved around a bit, but, I did fairly well there making a bit off of a quad aces. Carpal tunnel was setting in and per usual my craps meter was well oiled at this point, so over to Paris for some dice. Only played for about 1 hour, but was holding my own. A little in to the session a dude joins the table with literally a posse and he proceeds to throw 7 hundreds down. Now I'm not usually one to gawk at another man's stack, but, this guy had a bundle of 100's like I've never seen. He won a bit, lost a bit then threw some more hundreds down. I finally lost my buy in and decided it was best to call it a night, especially with the football games coming up tomorrow. 4 OAK count = 10, royal flush count = 0. Up overall, barely.

    Up next, Sunday, SUNDAY!!!

Sunday 10/24 Football Americain ....and spa

Sunday started with an awakening around 6am. Not feeling too bad either, actually better then Saturday. The plan for the day was for the wife to hit the spa for her noon appointment and me and bro to watch the games. I already had bets on the Giants, Falcons, and a 4 team parlay - Pats, Colts, Hawks, and Steelers. Had a quick bite to eat, lost $20 on the never ending dream, then started to head over to the bar. For some reason on my way over i walked past the craps table from last night. the dude with the posse that was throwing hundreds around was still there.... he looked like he was doing ok to with a chunk of black in the trays. I decided it was too early to join him so I cozied up to the bar du sport to get comfortable. Picked a sweet spot at le bar away from the walker ups and facing the sports book. Inserted my first "football" 20 into the vp whore and off we go, happened to notice it was 9:32am..... What kind of loser starts drinking at 9:32 am. Well, it wasn't me, but there was a couple, obviously from Chicago, that just cozied up also and did just that. They had full Bears regalia on and were raring to go. As the bar wasn't quite full yet the ever attentive barkeep asked me what game I wanted on and I replied the Falcons please. Bro came down to join me around 9:55. Takes him about 20 minutes to start drinking. Well, what was I supposed to do, let him drink alone? What kind of person would I be? Corona no lime please.

Now in case you haven't figured it out by now I always ask for no lime. It is purely for sanitary reasons. In my backwards thinking mind, someone had to cut those limes, and that is probably the same person that is the bartender, or the bar-back, either way there is no way their hands are clean when they're cutting them. Or when they are forcing it into the tiny hole at the top of the bottle. Or that the limes stay clean when they're sitting out all day/night behind the bar. I know what you're thinking....why not just order another beer idiot? Well, let me tell you Corona is a finely crafted brew, and for some reason I don't feel as bad after having 15 of them as I do with other brews.

*** I had to insert this note upon re-reading this - Did you happen to notice that I used there, their, and they're correctly in one of the sentences above. It's the little things in life that get me through....

Ok so back to the grind. It's now 10:20am and two things become very clear very quickly. First, the Falcons are a real good team and them getting +2.5 points is absolutely ridiculous. Second, this could be a marathon session of debauchery.

It's now almost 11:30, I've hit my first 4oak already and the beers are attacking me from all fronts. VP is the perfect game for watching football, you play a few hands, watch a football play, play a few more vp hands, watch a play, pound the hold/draw, take a drink, celebrate touchdown, not get a royal, watch Philly self destruct, rack up total rewards loser points, switch to deuces wild, another Corona please. Rinse and repeat and then before you know it, the time is like 12:30. Holy crap, the steelers and pats have commanding leads, the Seahawks are looking good, and the colts are at least in the game. Couple more minutes roll by and all but the Colts hit. Doesn't this always happen with parlays, I always hit all but one game. The good news is that this was the only football bets I lost all trip.

Sometime during the first game we noticed the couple wearing the Bears jerseys have the attendant come over. Looks like she had a hand pay and the drinks continued to flow. Also noticed that the husband was a bit of a one man show, every couple minutes shouting out random songs....have I ever told you that I love you followed by some ACDC. This dude was on fire. Then all the sudden he starts cheering for apparently no reason, but wait, so were all the Packers fans. WTF, a Bears fan cheering the Pack? He shouts out that he has Rodgers in his fantasy league. C'mon that would be like a bills fan taking Brady.....oh wait the Bills suck so it doesn't matter. Probably about 2pm now and the slot attendant is over talking to these two again. I can't believe it's another hand pay. It wasn't, it was something completely different. The Bears wife hit 4 aces on a dollar machine and accidentally hit the double button. She was freaking out because she didn't want to do it. The slot attendant had no idea what to do so over comes another management looking lackey. He jokes around a bit with them, then calls someone else. Comes back and they're pointing to the screen and such. After some reconnaissance we see she had a 6 for the double opportunity. Turns out the management lackey just agreed to null the double attempt and pay her the $400. I'm wondering if this trick would work when I double " by accident" and get an ace.

Got a text from the wife around 2:30ish she was finishing up so we went up to the room. It was hard to hide the fact we had been drinking since 10ish. She was on to us, and she wasn't happy. More with the not being drunk herself, then with us. She packs a roadie and off we go to the Cosmo. We wanted to play some high dollar slots and take chance at some big $$$. We got the wife a card and told the dude behind the counter that we'll see home in like 2 minutes after we lose the $100. We decided to split the play 3 ways with each person playing through their piece. The wife started with $1 slots and lost, I went into high limit and played the $5 slots, bro did the same.... Total time to lose $100 was 8 minutes. The good news was that we got drinks while in the high limit area. Back to get the $$ reloaded and then back to play this free play off. I started with the ultra conservative approach of playing video roulette red and black at the same time for like $2 each. Wife went back to slots and ended up actually playing through the free play and making more money.

We wandered around the strip a bit more and ended up back at ParBallys. I go over to Ballys as this seems to be the only place I can win. I quickly squirrel over to the vp machines over near the keno korner. It's probably about 8 or 9 at this point and I had stopped drinking from the earlier binge. But of course there was this magical lady that kept coming around asking me if I wanted anything....hmmm what was I supposed to say. I proceed to pound away for the next 3 or 4 hours, looking for that elusive royal and wondering how all these corona no limes were going down so smoothly. I was able to hit a couple quads including a premium Aces for $100. Dead tired hit around midnight when my eyes couldn't stay open any more - In bed by 12:30. Somehow I remember that was happy with myself for basically getting trashed twice in one day, not really losing any money today, and getting carpal tunnel for the estimated 10,000 hands of vp I played. Funny how 10 drinks alter your state of mind. I was really only happy about one of those things and I'll let you decide which one. 4 OAK count = 15, royal flush count = 0. Up overall, barely still.

Monday - living it up with the locals

The more I visit the local joints the more I think that I'm crazy for spending any time on the strip. First stop today was South Point. Guess what? They have video poker there too. And it's a 8/5 bonus vs 7/5 at Ballys vs ultra low crappy 6/5 at Paris . South point also had $3 craps and $5 bj. No surprise I start with vp and for fun I start counting full houses to see what the differential would be if I were playing back at the Frenchy.

As I'm pounding away I hear a mini scream and look over to see the wife has hit $100 4 aces. She couldn't be happier and proceeds to tell me what I'm doing wrong with my play and why I've never hit a royal..... All I hear is the teacher from the Peanuts cartoons "wha wha whaaaaa, whaa, whaaa, aces, whaa wha". She, unlike me, has hit a royal before and she wasn't even trying. It was on one of her girlfriend trips to Aruba or Puerto Rico or some other place that isn't Vegas. What makes it even worse is that she only had 3 coins in. This doesn't count in my book, but, I have no leverage here because I've never had one. I played a bunch more vp while the others moved to craps. We weren't there that long and according to my south pointer loser card I played 695 hands. During that play I hit 16 full houses which equates to 160 more quarters that I won there vs if I was playing at Paris. That's 40 freakin dollars. Maybe I was just lucky to get that many full houses.

Done with south point and onto the Orleans. This was another great joint. The buffet was hit for $8.99 which included drink. Bonus deuces wild was played, a few beers were consumed, and a good time was had by most. If they could just get everyone to stop smoking I would set up a cot and live in the food court. I know folks have the right to smoke, and I know that I'm going to encounter it more than a bit when we hit a casino. My real problem other than the second hand smoke is the people that light a cigarette and just let it burn. Take some tugs on that thing and get rid of it. Don't prolong the agony, turn your attention away from Kitty Glitter for 30 seconds and take it down. Then take a break for a couple minutes. Where was I, oh yeah, the Orleans was great and we decided to play another round of mini-golf $5/hole/person. Big surprise that I did not win.

Back to the strip after dinner and over to Bill's for some more low stakes gambling. I'm done with that soon enough and Ballys is beckoning. Back to the vp/ keno korner and a pounding we go. I usually don't drink too much on the last night because its not usually a fun plane ride hungover. Sorry to say, or happy to say that this philosophy didn't last long. Corona no lime, corona no lime, then start playing the triple play deuces wild just for fun. Couple hands/beers in, I hit 4 deuces for a sweet $250. I am feeling real good at this point, on top of the world, what could possibly go wrong now?

After another hour we're back at Paris and the beer to craps ratio seemed to be reaching critical mass. On to the felt we go. A couple #s hit, but, after a few more rolls things took a turn for the worse. As it can happen in this beautiful game my initial buy-in was gone in a flash. I should've just gone to bed, but this was my last night so why not try again. And again. Blackjack? And again. yes sir can i have another. Don't remember it all, I am just sure it was a bloodbath. Isn't that why I was here though? To take a shot at greatness. Yes it was, and I fell right on my face.

In at 1:59? Down big for the night, down for the trip but less then budget - who cares the hotel was free. Estimated vp hands played = 16 billion, 4 oak count = 17, royal count = big fat notta.

Day 5 Tuesday - get out of town

No major issues getting out of Paris, our bill $29. Had about 3-4 hours before flight so we voted to headed back to Green Valley Ranch. Played as many VP hands as humanly possible there with no royal.

    Trip recap:

Not so good things: Still No royal!! I must be cursed.

Good things: being able to play whenever I wanted to , only hitting the ATM once during trip, slot golf, and Sundays in Vegas during NFL season

Great things: Coronas no lime - probably had 75 total for the trip, the local joints, almost every worker in the casinos I encountered. Never had a bad conversation with anyone.

We were at Paris the same time as you! Oct 26 - Oct 30.. We were also at the Sports bar at Paris at the same time as you :)

My husband was there in a Raider Jersey watching the game at the bar. I just popped in to say hi every once in awhile.

Great trip report, thank you for writing it.
