The "we" mentioned in the heading happen to be a couple of 82 year old Las Vegas lovers from Edmonton, Alberta. We have been married for 57 years and are both still in pretty decent health. We are driving down next month, and have 10 nights booked at the Orleans--arriving on Sept.25.
We have been down to Vegas many times since retiring, and nearly always during January. We stopped winter driving to Vegas 2 years ago, and this will likely be our last non-winter motor trip. But we fully intend to come down by West-Jet once or twice a year for as long as we are able to.
We love the Orleans. Decent sized rooms, (at affordable prices), good restaurants, and lots of low denomination slots to have fun with. The pool area, and the shuttle bus to the Gold Coast & the strip are added features that we enjoy.
We think that our upcoming 10 days together with the week we were down in January will put us both in the Emerald status of Boyd's B connected system, which should give us quite a bit of leverage when we book for our January stay, And I guess it will pay for a few meals on this trip as well.
In recent months there has been mention in the message board that the higher floors at the Orleans have new plasma TV's. When I made my reservation the other day I was told that nearly all rooms have them or will have them by the end of Sept. When I check in, I will do my best to get one anyhow, pleading sympathy for our decrepit old ages, and also suggesting that a 10 day reservation should be worthy of it under any circumstances.
As I said earlier-----------ORLEANS, HERE WE COME !!!!

Have a great time! Sounds like you really know how to enjoy it and wow, 10 days! That size of a trip in itself might make the driving worth it.

My family & I stayed for a week in late July and our 3 rooms on the 6th floor still had the old tube tvs. I should have asked when checking in but was more concerned with getting 3 rooms near each other.

Sounds like you are very excited and it will be a great trip! Enjoy!!

We'll be at the Orleans for 2 nights in mid September. We'll be there celebrating my mom's 90th birthday. She still loves Vegas and we stay at the Orleans for at least part of our trip every time we go.

You and the missus are an inspiration to me Walt. Some people half your ages have already lost their zest for life. DH and I will just miss you - we are staying at the Orleans for four nights, but leaving on the 24th. Think of us while you're (hopefully) collecting your winnings. Chances are we will have made a donation!

Now THAT's how we want to be when we grow up! (We're only in our early 60s) We stayed at the Orleans in April during Rockabilly weekend and really loved the place ~ we'll be back there mid-September for a couple of nights.

Have fun, you two! and Good luck!!

    Orleans--Here we come!

My wife, Kay, (yes, she DOES have a name) and I are now one week away from our arrival at the Orleans. We intend to drive in early from Mesquite and partake in the Orlean's Tuesday goodies that are available from the Young at Heart program including 2 for one breakfast (or maybe lunch if we are not as early as we now think we will be). We will also be able check in early and make our eloquent plea for a room with the new-fangled TV.
Having a car will enable us to drive to the Suncoast once or twice over the 10 days. It is a Boyd property we have always liked, but it wasn't easily accessible from the Orleans on our past two visits when we flew down. The Gold Coast will also get some visits--some by shuttle. All of this will enable us to reach the B Connected Sapphire status, not the Emerald as I mentioned in my original blurb. Heavens, it would be a real challenge to reach Emarald status even if we were locals with our level of play.
We are grateful for all the nice, encouraging comments. We hope to be able to continue our visits to Vegas and the Orleans, although this will likely be our last time driving down, at least by ourselves.

Doubt if we will do any gambling at the bars. And we now prefer most of our Happy Hours to be in our room prior to dinner.
On the other hand, for this trip we are thinking about at least one HH at the TGIF bar, and may even try a marguerita or two at the Coasta Cantina bar. If we do the latter it will be my first marguerita since 1983 in Mazatlan. I have successfully sworn off them since then. Mind you, those were the days of my misspent youth (I was 53 at the time).
