I've been out of touch for most of July, and tonight I just read about the closure of that annoying zipline at the FSE!! HOORAY!!!!

I was under the impression that a good portion of the current FSE construction was for an extension of the zipline. If this was incorrect and the zipline is gone for good (PLEASE let this be so), then what is the purpose of the recent construction? Is there any official ETA for its completion? Any info would be welcome since I might plan a trip for mid-late August.

    Thanks!

They're building a slot machine themed bigger more obnoxious zip line called "Slotzilla." Lucky you. :evillaugh I hate it too, it's just one of these dumb trends that will eventually fade away, and/or it will be just another tourist attraction that is too expensive and ill attended to keep open ala Neonopolis. They've had seceral delays as far as the opening of this this is concerned, it was supposed to June 2013, now they're just saying "later this Summer or later this year." This thing is really going to fuck up the view of Fremont street. It's a dumb bad move. I bet the Plaza is pissed. Half the reason to eat at Oscars is the view of Fremont - literally destroyed now. Sickening.

OMG. That made me laugh so hard.... Not many people are happy about the Slotzilla. Poor Droyus, seems like it's getting even worse!

The Plaza should have been supporting Freemont Exp. financially all along. They very well might have had something to say about Slotzilla, it's size and the location.

This thing is horrendous and a huge eyesore! Near Fremont East, this thing is so huge, that 2 of us could not walk past each other between slotzilla and the local businesses. It almost forces you right into the Gyro shop and off of Fremont St. Good for them I guess.

Yep. As far as the Plaza goes they have no one to be upset about this blockage than themselves. They got to profit off of something they didn't pay for for several years. That would be like the roof top owners complaining that wrigley field in Chicago is putting up signs on blocking views. :poke:

I drove past it last week coming from MSS. I couldn't believe that put that big piece of shit there boxing out The Golden Gate. What a joke.

Downtown used to be my favorite. Now I visit MSS once and that's about it.

I'm am now officially done with DT.

I haven't been there since shortly after the old zipline opened (May 2010) was my last visit :cry:and I thought back then the idea of that on Fremont royally sucked ass. I was always paranoid that some dunken buffoon was going to yak on me from above as I perused down Fremont St. I love the outdoor bar in front of the Golden Gate, and Oscars Steakhouse - precisely because of the atmosphere and views. The more I see pictures of this thing the more I'm like wtf? It just looks like a proverbial turd in a bowl of milk. As jazzed as I am about my November trip, this is actually kind of putting a damper on my excitement.

I agree about the Plaza, but the Cubs demanded a portion of roof top revenues and signed a contract with roof top owners. The roof top owners pay the Cubs a significant portion of their revenues each season through the life of their contract.

    Say it isn't so. :( :(

Wow. Just...wow. Someone is determined to crap all over the FSE in the eyes of most tourists for the benefit of a meager few who enjoy paying $20-$30 for a 20 second ride on a stupid zipline. What crackhead thought that this was a good idea?!

Just when I was becoming a solid fan of staying downtown after almost 20 years of being a center-strip bum, too. Moving back there isn't really an option until construction for the Linq, the Quad and Gansevoort is finished next year.

Well anyway, thanks for the update. We can only hope that Slotzilla turns into Flopzilla (along with Neonflopolis) and perhaps it'll go away in a few years.

We were just there on Tuesday 7/30 right in the middle of the day and there wasn't a soul in sight working on that thing. As long as it's being delayed makes one wonder if they aren't having finance problems or permit issues?

I Goggled Slotzilla hoping to find some mention of bankruptcy, legal problems, or a host of other deal-breaking difficulties, but so far have come up empty. NUTS!

I just got back, and they are now putting up the skin around the steel skeleton. The one by the Golden Gate isnt that tall, so I dont think it will block the view from Oscars, at least of the light show. They are also opening up the tallest tower so that you can walk under it, and not have to be hearded around it.

Haha....Gotta tell ya, this is the first thing I've actually laughed out loud on the internet recently. The reason I laughed is that I've done this before myself; looking into the background of something I don't like hoping it was coming up against problems and wouldn't be completed.

I'm a huge fan of the changes/additions to Fremont. I'd never ride the zipline, but I will certainly enjoy watching others do it. Most people posting on this thread come across as old and crotchety. I can hear the future posts already about having to walk uphill....both ways....in the snow because of the changes on Fremont. Embrace the changes. They will bring new life to Fremont.

I'm not opposed to the concept of 'zip-lines'.
I just don't like how they've done this particular one.
If they had asked me, I would have strongly urged them to coordinate (and finance) this effort through one of the taller casinos (Plaza would have been perfect, but 'theD' would work too)
Design it in such a way so that the only thing 'over' FSE are the lines. Launch from the top of the Plaza, land on the 4th floor of 'theD'. Launch from the top of 'theD' and land on the third floor or so of the Plaza. Granted - it would've been outside of the canopy, but I think the views would have still been pretty unique - and the ride would be more exciting...and 'FSE' itself would be unaffected.
    Now that would've been cool.
But that's my opinion...I could be wrong.

Edit-to-add: Now, what would really be cool is a zip line from the top of the Strat to the top of 'theD'!!

I wish they would have kept the old one in place. Didn't really take away from anyone's "Fremont Street Experience" and yet was a blast to do it. Now some zipline company from Hawaii has offered up more $$$$ and we end up with this monstrosity.........
