    My Trip Report

I will be doing a TR later in year when we embark on a guy’s trip for the second time, this report is from a couple years back when I joined them for the first time.

    The Players

    Myself

    The Veteran aka The Vet

    Newbie Vegas first timer

    Poker guy No explanation needed

    J.a.d Just add drink

We flew from Manchester on a Saturday morning with AA, we were going via Chicago and after landing in the windy city a little late after the pilot had been given the wrong runway, (yeah I know.) We left the plane and the Vet and J.a.d were walking very quickly, we were near the middle of the plane so there were a few people in front of us, eventually we get to immigration and the Vet and J.a.d are a few people ahead of me, newbie and poker guy. The queue is quite long and it becomes clear after a short time that there aren’t many staff working and it’s not long before we realise that we are not going to make the connecting flight.
Eventually we are all through and we collect our luggage and go through customs before making our way to the AA desk to see what our options are, it is suggested by the Vet that we may not all end up on the same flight, the desk attendant looks and we are offered a route via Texas before we are given a direct flight and all on the same plane, we re-check our luggage and head to the terminal for our next flight. The Vet gets on the phone to the limo company while we drift around the shops before reconvening in a bar for a couple of drinks.

The flight is ok and on time although technically we are 2 hours late and this is why I don’t like going via Chicago although 12 months after this trip I ended up taking the same route. The limo is waiting for us and we make our way towards Downtown while drinking champagne and the Black eyed Peas blasting from the speakers, we reach El Cortez and because I had never been Downtown on my previous visits I didn’t know what to expect and judging by Poker guy’s comment neither had he.

“Look’s a bit dodgy” he remarked

We park up and get our luggage and make our way inside and it is a bit different from the Strip hotels but I realise that this is old style Vegas, we get checked in and agree to meet back in the casino in about 15 minutes, we go to our rooms and I get changed and unpack before heading back down and seeing who was already there. No surprise that J.a,d was already there with drink in hand, he must of opened his hotel door chucked his luggage in and shut the door. Soon the rest of the gang turn up and we head to the café to get something to eat and after that a couple more drinks before we all head to bed as it’s been a long day.

    Sunday

I was awake fairly early and after a shower I was down in the casino for about 9am, the Vet was already about and no surprise J.a.d was also there and with drink in hand. The rest soon turned up and we went to get breakfast before heading out onto Fremont Street for a walk round, newbie had his camera and was taking a photo of anything that moved or didn’t, we slowly made our way round and ended up in the Plaza for a while before eventually settling in Binion’s where the Vet introduces me to Keno, it’s straight forward and is basically bingo and I plod on with it while getting my comp drinks.
We pretty much spend most of the afternoon there before I tell the Vet I’m heading back to get changed as I’m off to watch Rod Stewart that night, we all head off to Cortez and I head to the café for something to eat before getting washed and changed and heading onto the Strip. The Vet decides to head to the Strip with me as he wants to do some gambling there and we catch the Deuce bus to Caesars and I have a drink with the Vet before heading to the show and we agree to meet outside Casino Royale after I get out.

The Rod Stewart show is great and he can still belt out the songs although he never sang Sailing which I thought was a bit strange, after the show I meet up with the Vet and newbie and Poker guy turns up as well, the Strip is busy and it’s decided that we are going to head back Downtown so we grab a cab and head back.
The cab drops us at El Co and the Vet and newbie go to get something to eat while Poker guy joins J.a.d at the blackjack table, I start playing on the Wheel of Fortune and I hit it for about $75 dollars, I then move machines and hit that for about$60 so not a bad few minutes. I get a bit bored and decide to head out for a wander about and I see for the first time the wonder of the FSE, I have a wander in and out of different casinos before ending up in Golden Gate and this my friends is where my love affair with this place started, the beer is good the staff friendly and the view is very nice, so I spend most of the night here before heading back to El Co, there I only find J.a.d at the table and I just head off to bed.

    Monday

I was awake fairly early and went down to see who was about, and yes J.a.d was there with a drink, after a while the rest turned up and went for some breakfast and after that J.a.d returned to that tables while the rest of us sorted out going shooting, we found a leaflet in the hotel for a shooting place and we got a cab and asked the driver to take us there. We pulled up outside the range which was called Machine Guns Vegas and on getting out we heard a few shots ring out, Poker guy jumped as he heard them and asked the most obvious question which was “is that gunfire,” we all replied with “yes.” We made our way inside and was greeted by a very nice lady who was dressed in a Laura Croft type way, we sat at a table while she run through the options we had, I went for navy seal as did Poker guy, the Vet went for gangster packager while newbie who is ex army ordered all sorts of stuff.

We showed the girl the leaflet we had as we were supposed to get a discount and she informed us the leaflet we had was for another company but we would still get a discount. After a while it was our turn and we took turns on the firing range for me it was the first time I had fired a gun, we all enjoyed it and are going to do it again later this year on the next trip. After we had finished and got out t shirts we were offered transport back to the hotel, once there we split up, myself Poker guy and newbie went for a wonder while the vet stayed at El Co. The afternoon was pretty much spent having a drink a gamble and just generally wandering around, after getting back myself the vet and newbie went to get something to eat at the café while Poker guy and J.a.d went out to watch Monday night football on Fremont Street.

After dinner I went and got changed and met up with Vet and Newbie and we headed out and eventually came across Poker Guy and J.a.d in Four Queens, it would appear that J.a.d may have had a few during the course of the day and I think Poker guy was getting a bit fed up with him, me and Vet said we were going Golden Gate and we had hardly got onto Fremont Street before newbie caught us up, J.a.d is a nice guy but can get a little loud and obnoxious when he’s had a few drinks.
We settled in the Golden Gate for a few beers and a look around, I think newbie enjoyed it anyway, we made our way back down Fremont via various casinos before landing back in El Co.

    Tuesday

Was a quiet day as we went separate ways to do our own thing although J.a.d had been doing that since he got in Vegas, apparently he and Poker guy had a few words at the table the previous night, me and Poker guy spent an afternoon on the Strip having a wander about and a drink or two in NYNY before catching the bus back Downtown, we all met up for something to eat in the evening before separating, I ended up in Golden Gate and Poker guy had joined me for a few drinks and then we headed back to El Co for a few more and before we knew it, it was about 3am so time for some sleep.

    Wednesday

Despite my late night I felt ok in the morning and went down for some breakfast, I couldn’t find anyone else so it was a late breakfast alone, I met up with Vet and newbie who said that J.a.d had pretty much blown out and his body had pretty much told his brain sleep was needed and in fact we wouldn’t see him for another 24 hours or so. Me and newbie went out for a walk and eventually ended up in Main Street, where there was plenty of photo opportunities, we went to the bar and I ordered a lager not realising that lager in the U.S is not the same as in the U.K, newbie got the sampler where you get a variety of different beers, I struggle through but drank the lager, we headed back to El Co and met up with Vet and I went to get changed as we planned to go down onto the Strip.

So it was me Vet and newbie as Poker guy was a little delicate from the previous evening and J.a.d was still MIA, we got the Deuce down to Mandalay Bay and vet took us up to the Mix bar where you just get a stunning view of Vegas, after a couple of beers in there we headed back up the Strip via NYNY and eventually ended up in Mirage as Newbie wanted to go to the BB King Blues bar there, although we didn’t go inside because there was a cover charge but did had a drink at the bar outside, Vet ordered the round and probably wish he hadn’t when it came to $25.
We were a bit hungry so headed to Carnegies for something to eat, me and newbie ordered what we thought was just a sandwich, boy how wrong were we, Vet went for an omelette and was laughing when he heard us ordering the sandwiches. What arrived in front of me and newbie was well a bit of a shock, we both attempted to eat them but got to say we failed miserably, I even had a couple of people come over and take a picture of my sandwich, the waitress asked if I wanted a box for the large remains of it, I just told her to take it away I didn’t want to see it again.

After Carnegies we went to catch the bus back but as we got out the rain started coming down so we decided on a cab back to El Co, once back Poker guy was about playing on the machines and I recalled my tale of the sandwich from hell and even showed the picture as evidence, Poker guy remarked that it like Man Vs Food.
Me and newbie went out and went to Henassy’s and called in a couple of places before ending up in Golden Gate for a few before ending the night in El Co.

    Thursday

After breakfast I headed onto the Strip as nobody else was around, I got the bus and got off mid Strip for a walk around, a guy I know had asked if I would get him a Hard Rock T shirt as he collects them, I had no problem with this as he had given me the money but also a list want and not wants. I had look in the café and couldn’t find too much of what he was after, so I thought I would walk down to Hard Rock Hotel, now the weather this day wasn’t great, it had rained overnight and the sky still wasn’t clear. I started my walk down Harmon knowing that if it started raining I was getting soaked as you were pretty much in no man’s land. Thankfully the rain held off and I made it there dry, I hadn’t been here before so I had a chance to have a look around before my walk back to the Strip, I did get him a t shirt but it had to be white based on the design he wanted, he didn’t want white but it’s tough. One thing I did see was the effect of the overnight down pour had on the Vegas drainage system.

After I got back to El Co I went for some food, and then back to the room for a shower rest and change, I headed out and hit Binion’s and Four Queens and as I come out of Four Queens there is the most almighty down pour, it is absolutely bouncing down and I decided to return inside for a beer and wait for it to stop, after a beer I go back out and it had stopped, so I head up to Golden Gate and not long after I’m joined by newbie and Poker guy who had also dodged the rain, we stayed in GG for a while before walking back down to El Co for a beer or two before bed.

    Friday

I woke about 10am and went down although none of the guys were about, I had decided to do the Skyjump at the Strat, so I jumped on the bus and made my way to the Stratosphere , I went in and got signed up and paid my money and waited for my turn. As I sat there an alarm went off and we were all told we had to evacuate the building, the staff led me and another couple of guys through a maze of corridors before we got outside. Not long after we got out we were told it was ok to go back in, After getting back inside it wasn’t long before it was my turn to suit up and make my way to the top of the tower, I was with a young woman who was doing the jump and once we were at the top it was a case of who goes first, personally I would have been happy to go first and get it done but I let her go first as she seemed keen.

After she jumped it was now my turn, I went into the room where the winch is and I had my picture took, I was led to the door which would put me on this small walkway, up until now I was fine and had no nerves but as soon as I stepped onto the platform it was like someone had flicked a switch and my nerves kicked in big time. A safety line was put on and I was checked over and another picture was taken, the main line was put on and the safety line was taken off, well this is it now, I creep to the edge of the platform with a hand gripping the rails either side, the guy shouts 3-2-1 jump and amazingly I jump and once I leave the platform my nerves disappear and I enjoy the thrill of falling to the ground attached to a cable, the cable slows and my feet touch the ground, it’s over quite quick but it is a hell of a thrill.

After that excitement I head over to Macdonalds for some much needed food before a wander around the Strip as this will be the last day in Vegas, I then return to El Co and find Vet, newbie and Poker guy and tell them what I did, they are impressed and after I get changed we go for some dinner, after filling up we hang around Elco for a bit before me Vet and Newbie head out on to Fremont for a final night out, we start in Golden Nugget and have a look around and we seem to lose the Vet somewhere during the evening, we end up in Golden Gate again before heading back to Henasseys for a night cap. But I don’t feel too bad so I head back to GG while newbie goes back to El Co, I have my final drinks at GG before heading back to El Co and look forward to travelling back to the UK the next day.

Think he slept for about 24 hours or so, didn't see too much of him during the trip as he plays BJ a lot so he was always at the table
