I am looking for an old school steakhouse experience for our next trip to Vegas in April. I have been reading reviews on Hugo's Cellar and Vic and Anthony's. We have dined at Gordon Ramsey Steak and Andiamos and have enjoyed both of them. Price is not so much an issue. There will be three of us, so don't need it to feel like date night with the atmosphere. Are there reasons to select or not select one of the 2 downtown restaurants? I know everyone has their own opinion, just want to hear a few from the experienced diners. Thanks!

The Cortez Room at The Gold Coast is pretty old school and the food is pretty good as well.

The Steakhouse at Circus Circus. Not kidding. Great meal and truly old school and very elegant atmosphere.

Vic & Anthony's is great. Easily as good as any place on the Strip and I've eaten at a lot of them!

Golden Steer has been around decades..Off Sahara..Went there in 1986 and from everything I have read it is still the same..Only reason never been back is basically because never stayed in the area again..(Vegas World/Strat). Their website has some photos and menu.

not sure if hugo's even bills itself as a "steakhouse", but i have thought for many years that it is the most overrated establishment in las vegas that i ever found. there are some lovers of the place here, to the point that i have often thought i should give it another chance, but with so many other solid choices, why?

of the two you mentioned, i would go with vic and anthony's.

    Agree with Golden Steer.

Bpb Taylor's Ranch House is great and a bit less expensive, but it's waaaaayyyyy out in the middle of nowhere.

Another vote for Golden Steer. Crappy exterior - but the interior is a time travel experience back to old Las Vegas and lounge-style steak joints. You can sit in the same booths Dino, Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe sat in. The one by the back door was favored by Tony Spilatro - so he could make a quick exit if the cops came in.

    Another vote for Golden Steer.
We did our 10th anniversary dinner there this past June.
    Excellent.
Sat in the Sammy Davis Jr. booth.

Don't let the exterior setting fool you, It is true old-school inside.

The ex and I sat outside the Golden Steer debating whether or not it was the right place after reading about it online. Figured at the worst, we go in and walk right out if it wasn't what we were expecting. Very glad we went in, one of the best pieces of Prime Rib I've ever enjoyed. Only thing I wasn't prepared for was the waiter placing his hand on the back of my chair when I ordered and asking 'Would you like the ladies cut, sir?" Next thing I know, I have 24 oz men's cut on its way to me. How do you answer 'yes' to that kind of question while sitting across from John Wayne's booth?

doesn't get better than this. You wont find that kind of humor at one of those 'fancy' places!

Stacda ... awesome tale!! It's like a good caddie who despite you making eagle or clattering an el lateral off the hosel can just bring the needle and the humor. :nworthy:

Plenty of airs at so-called "fancy" places. And airs for airs' sake suck. Also a helluva lot of impeccable service often mistaken for airs. But we've had as much dreadful service and dour attitudes at down-market places as 'tudes on the other end. One place -- RIP -- that always brought service and immense personality was Commander's Palace. And Puck's people always seem to nail the hiring practices from our experiences across his empire.
