I am hardly considered a tree hugger, but all this extra plastic garbage makes me sad.

Also while you can always bump someone with a can or bottle and get some spillage, the wider cups are going to make getting spilled upon a distinct possibility while moving through the crowd. :drunk:

    Thanks Mayor ,.,.,.,

Packaged liquor has to be put in a closed bag, and Mayor .,.,. ',',..,.. was insistent liquor must be put in a liquor only bag with a receipt attached, to prohibit someone from opening a liquor bag to reach in and grab something else. That language is expected to be introduced in a future liquor ordinance.

Here is a article that rules --

The Las Vegas City Council unanimously approved a watered-down liquor ordinance Wednesday that bans liquor in open glass and aluminum containers on the Fremont Street Experience.

Looks like we should all buy plastic bottles and make em do their work by telling us hey please dump that bottle and us answering oh but it's plastic

    Fricking city....What a shame.....

Fun has just been dampened by .....

No, the article is just not going in to minute details. The actual law covers bottles or cans made of either plastic, metal or glass.

couldnt agree more. Can't wait to see if they actually enforce this or are just using it to keep bums out of the area.

These Einsteins aren't done. Apparently they figured out they left a loophole.

    From Fox 5 Vegas:

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) - After last week banning alcohol in glass and metal containers under the Fremont Street Experience canopy, Las Vegas City Council is looking at another measure to curb drinking there.

You can only consume alcohol from plastic cups at Fremont, but a quick stroll through the area on Friday quickly revealed many are ignoring that ban.

Now, City Council is considering another restriction. Under it, you wouldn't be allowed to remove alcohol from the bag it was wrapped in at purchase at Fremont Street Experience. The same rule would apply to packaged liquor.

The idea is to keep alcohol from being consumed on the street.

Council members fear the area's reputation as being out of control. Councilman Bob Beers said that if your aim is to consume as much alcohol as possible, you should go elsewhere.

"Don't go down to Fremont Street if your goal is to consume a lot of alcohol," he said.

Isn't the easy answer to place a few more officers in the area? Put some signage about public intoxication and have a low tolerance level for trouble makers. Like most laws, it seems like it's really only going to hurt the people the were willing to obey the law in the first place.

It's pretty clear the purpose of the law has nothing to do with restricting drinking, it's to stop people from buying beer in the ABC shops , which typically charge maybe $2 for a big can and then not having to go into the casinos at all. So pouring a casino bought beverage into a plastic cup is perfectly ok, but pouring a store bought one into the same container is illegal(since it's illegal to open the bag you are given).
The casino's sponsor the concerts, which want to attract hundreds of people to hang out and yes, drink right smack dab on the street, but god forbid you buy that drink cheaper from a small local business.

I would say be careful what you wish for, because if they lose a certain % of people it will seem less "fun", which means less people will come, which means they will lose more people, etc, etc, until the whole thing fails, including the precious casinos.

Yep. If this is the new rule, I will not stay or gamble downtown anymore. What a waste...

there are actually some pretty quality wines in boxes now :evillaugh

and I don't think this is actually anything to do with the casinos desire to sell you more liquor because many are getting it FREE as it is for gambling

it is just the inability for the "leaders" of Las Vegas to foresee or deal with the consequences of the loser attracting attractions they have created downtown and the trashy behavior of those that come to them

on the other hand the "bars" in the "bar district" to the east of Fremont surely do want you in there listening to their crappy bands and buying their expensive alcohol, but those are not casino bars and generally not casino affiliated

and if correctly pointed out by the OP if the police would actually just enforce existing laws against long term losers and their trashy behaviors they would not have to make more of these stupid rules

all you are going to see now is young scumbags with backpacks on filled with liquor not visible walking into allies and side streets and filling up their plastic cups and or water bottles or other "approved" containers and then walking right back into the crowd

I would give it less than a week before most of these liquor stores are selling backpacks that are insulated or with pour spouts or any combination of something that can't be searched without probable cause, but that keeps liquor readily available and easy to access and beers and wine cooler ect cold

this rule is like a 90yo that still uses a dial phone trying to write a rule to stop internet porno

Me too. Along with the changes being done to Downtown, seems a whole new set of problems arise. I commend the effort to provide a more diverse image of downtown; bars, clubs, and social hang-outs instead of the usual gambling that Downtown was known for.

A small (but growing?) group of rubbish loser idiots are ruining the overall Downtown experience. The majority of Downtown visitors are responsible drinkers. Now, one aspect of Downtown they enjoy is ruined by these ass-holes.

One thing about plastic cups is that the drink gets warm fast. I don't think I'll have this problem since I guzzle my beers fast because I don't like warm beers.

I used to enjoy cruising Fremont. Not anymore. There was a time you could wander unbothered, but now you can't walk 10 feet before someone asks you for money. Between the costumed characters, mental institute escapees, and the beggars, it seems you are running a gauntlet. Now you gotta add the obnoxious drunks who have no intention of visiting casinos or bars but exist solely for getting drunk and making trouble.

I might start heading for the local casinos soon, places like Orleans, GVR, Red Rock, M, etc.

I think Someone is right and they don't actually want to fix the problem. They just want to drive the liquor stores out under the guise of fixing the problem. Just more politics...
