Ok, so here is my question.
My wife and I have a long weekend planned in Vegas to see Reba and Brooks & Dunn.
We can get a 1 Bedroom Penthouse at the Mirage with Limo to and from the airport and VIP lounge access or a 1 Bedroom Terrace Suite with no Limo at the Cosmo.
Both hotels are pretty close in cost. (Cosmo is like 75.00 more) Which should we choose and why ?

Can you provide more details like what else are you folks planning to do? Preferences like pool, food choices, gambling, age, etc. I've never stayed at Mirage but I have at Cosmo. From the site it looks like the 1bdrm Penthouse is about 350 sq ft larger than the Terrace Suite, which is around 910 sq ft. If it's just you and you wife, it should be more than enough space. Don't know if you're planning to stay in the room a lot, but the terrace makes it's extra enjoyable. But properties are fairly close to the center where you can pretty much walk to any other spots on the strip.

These are my two favorite hotels. The only reason I would pick Cosmo Over Mirage is the balcony, but if that isn't important to you then you mighty Make a different decision. Have fun!

Mirage Penthouse is a larger more comfortable room.Mirage pool is also nicer than either pool at Cosmo.
Your age is probably a factor as Cosmo demographics are usually people in their 20s on weekends.

I enjoyed the balcony at Cosmo but did not spend nearly the time there to make it a priority.

The Cosmo is all around a much nicer and cooler hotel than the Mirage is. They're not even in the same league. I'd go with Cosmo.

Op what room are you staying in at Cosmo? The terrace suite or the 1bedroom? There is a big difference but if you are in the terrace suite (910 sqf+balcony overlooking fountain) i would go with that without hesitation. Otherwise i guess it comes down to whats more important to you, the 1 bedroom penthouse is a true suit while the 1 bedroom at Cosmo is about half the size. On the other hand Cosmo over Mirage as a property any day of the week.

Do you have an existing relationship with the Mirage or MLIFE? The upside to Mirage is it's linked to the other MGM owned casinos and you can do room charges across properties.

The Cosmo balcony is awesome to have and I personally enjoy having the smaller property footprint along with being upscale. But having the limo airport transfer and VIP lounge is a nice incentive as well. I personally prefer the Cosmo but I have to disclose that I've never stayed at the Mirage and have only gone for shows like Love or Daniel Tosh and the occasional drink at Rhum Bar.

Over Easter we had a one bedroom penthouse suite at the Mirage and loved it. I also really like the Mirage, but the included limo, and VIP lounge access would probably seal the deal for me.

No argument with "Cooler" but saying nicer and not in the same league is simply disingenuous.
The third party booking sites have them rated virtually identical and TA actually has the Mirage higher rated.

I am not promoting either property just trying to be objective to help the OP.
Stayed at both properties numerous times and both have some positives and negatives.

The hotel issues at Cosmo with housekeeping, service and other issues are well documented.
I think the new owners are working to address the issues but they are not 100% yet.

I've stayed at both and much prefer Cosmo. To me The Mirage seemed old and crowded...not of people but like too much stuff is packed into the Casino area. Very hard to navigate.
Cosmo is new, easy to navigate and the rooms are amazing. The balcony itself trumps most anything at other hotels. I'm an MGM Gold Level but still stay at the Cosmo frequently even though I get no points.

TA and other rating sites can be a great tool when comparing properties and restaurants etc. But it can also be totally worthless if you don't use them correctly, you always have to compare it the same price category/tier level and even then it has some flaws but will be a lot more accurate. People staying in a luxury resort will most likely have higher expectations and demands on the property then people staying at a mid level resort. This is why you can see Mirage rated higher then Cosmo, Wynn, Skyloft etc. The same goes for restaurants, TA has such a ordinary place like Cheesecake Factory rated as number 3 in all of Vegas. Well it still can't hold a candle to Joel Robuchon even though the ratings says differently.

Also as others have mentioned Cosmo and Mirage are playing in different leagues..

    Agree 100%
I only cited TA in addition to others based on the "not in the same league" comment.

TA is the worst in terms of objectivity and simply counts how many rate something.
Clearly a lot more people eat at Cheesecake Factory than Robuchon or Picasso.

I think the point Nittany was trying to make is a good one though: the recommendation is somewhat based on the demographics and preferences of the target audience. If the OP is mid-20's I would recommend Cosmo. If mid-30's or higher, I would recommend the Mirage. Just saying that one is way better than the other without taking into account the demographic of the OP is not as helpful IMO. I would have different hotel recommendations for my parents than I would for my friends.

This is certainly true but its hard to make a recommendation without knowing much about OP. A recommendation based on age alone is not much better, sure Mirage draws an much older crowd while Cosmo is much more hip and modern. Still today a lot of people even in their 50´s would fit right in to Cosmo, they might not be into nightclubs anymore but the appeal of a nice and modern room along with some nice restaurants, bars etc can be enjoyed with a wide variety of age groups. Also some people don't like fine dining and upscale resorts and vice versa, doesn't necessarily has anything to do with how old or young a person is.

I stand by my "not in the same league" comment. :) It's a pretty new luxury hotel vs a 3 1/2 star outdated hotel. I'm not saying it's horrible, but they're just not in the same league. I'm not basing it on Internet info, that's just my humble opinion (though I am sure many will agree).

Age-wise, I'm in my 30's and all my friends in 40's and even early 50's and all feel perfectly comfortable at the Cosmo (not feeling too old) - there are a broad range of ages that stay at the hotel. I don't see all 20 year olds unless I'm walking past the line for Marquee.

A limo is what, $50-100? And abundantly available outside every hotel? If that's the determining factor of which hotel to stay at, well...

I agree with Kdiamond's comment. Mirage was a 5-star hotel 20 years ago before Venetian, Bellagio, Aria and Cosmo. But it's 3.5 stars like Bally's. They need to spend $$$ to renovate like Caesars Palace did.

We are both mid 50s, I like being by the pool during the day, Wife loves to do spas, I gamble but not real heavy, We will be there 4 days and by gambling budget is $3,000.00
We are not into night clubs, But like siting and listening to live music and having a few drinks. We have stayed at Mirage last 5 or 6 years and have always had a 1 bedroom penthouse. w/ Limo and vip lounge.
The only reason were even thinking about the Cosmo is the Balcony's.

I appreciate the scene at both, but the older I get the more I gravitate to Mirage and similar resorts.

Ballys and Mirage should not be in the same sentence.......lol. I personally don't think you will be disappointed with either property. I don't have any first hand info, but have seen enough about Cosmo to know that it ain't my cup of tea. I'm all about gambling, not a trendy and swank atmosphere. To each their own......have a great trip.

The balcony at the Cosmo is definitely a selling point. It's one of the main reasons we love to stay at the Cosmo when it's warm. There's really nothing like sitting out on the balcony sipping an adult beverage while watching the lights of Vegas come on; or, watching the Bellagio fountains. I, too, have stayed in a one bedroom penthouse at the Mirage and have enjoyed everything that went with it. When we stay at the Cosmo it's in a wraparound because we like the space and we get a fountain view. If you can get a fountain view I would do it.
