I have a stay booked for the end of December and just received an email from the front desk vice manager that it has gone non-smoking! My last time there I had requested non-smoking, so wasn't aware of this change. I do know once before when I checked in the clerk had to get permission to give me a room that had been blocked for smoking. Anyone else know about this? Oh, also says no vapor............

    What a joke, No Vapor???

How would they ever know if Vapor was used?

You know, this has kind of bothered me....I cannot find anywhere that says MGM Grand is a non-smoking hotel....the Signature, yes, but that's not where I booked. If they're out of smoking rooms, fine. But to say every room is non-smoking etc, well, it just sounds fishy????

Well, this may be something fairly new they are phasing in....I know Aria has been a non-smoking hotel, and I just read on Trip Adviser that a couple went to Monte Carlo with no prior notification on a trip they had booked and were told it was all non-smoking as well. That all MGM hotels were going to do it. This may or may not be a good thing as far as attracting people goes.

They cant I was vaping up a storm at Aria when i stayed there a few weeks ago and didnt hear one word. If anything, they should encourage people to vape instead of smoking in the rooms.

I called Monte Carlo and yes - no more smoking rooms. The desk guy told me about the same thing as what you posted, that they're phasing out the smoking rooms in all their casinos. He said they plan on knocking one out every month or two and the Mirage is next.

I know I'm just a faceless low roller, but I think this is a bad idea. You can't keep two floors out of 4000 rooms in a motel for smokers? I told him this and (evidently he is a smoker) he agreed.

My 4th trip will be in March and have stayed at Excalibur every time(This trip I will split between there and Orleans). I'm going to keep tabs on this and if it looks like it's going to happen at Excalibur too, I'll take their free room, freeplay, and resort credit and then say see ya and head for CET casinos.

I love smoking while gambling but Ive never requested a smoking room. I enjoy a non-smokey room while sleeping.

I'm sure some accountant showed Jim how he could save money on air handling costs by going non smoking (like the airlines did) and how by going non-smoking he can lengthen the times between room re-models.

It seems pretty obvious to me that it is to force them to go down to the casino in order to smoke.

All about milking that extra dollar....

Although not good for their bottom line (or is it, especially if they charge a cleaning fee if they find out you smoked in your room or you use the casino to smoke in), as a non-smoker it makes me happy. Nothing worse than checking into a room that smell of smoke or booking a non-smoking room to find out they have none left at check in (although not in Vegas, that has happened to me)

This is something I would think the free market could fix, if smoking was that big of a deal inside rooms for people they could speak with their dollar and stay at a place that would accommodate them. I don't care about smoking anywhere but the room. This is just another slip though, I wouldn't be surprised in a 20 years that entire resorts are non-smoking.

Was that the only reason for the email?

If so, do you mind copying it here? Aria did do it basically with no notice to guests. Maybe MGM Grand is at least trying.

Here's a copy, it was on MGM "stationary" and had the assistant manager's info on it, but this is the crux of it:

    Dear Valued Guest,

We look forward to welcoming you to the MGM Grand for your upcoming trip. We received your request for a smoking room; however all of our guest rooms and floors are non-smoking including vapors. We do have designated smoking areas throughout our casino and outdoor areas. If you need anything else to make your stay more enjoyable please feel free to let us know.

    Best regards,

It will save them money over time because it will keep the rooms cleaner. There probably is demand for smoking rooms but it seems to me not enough to continue to offer them and/or an unwillingness on the part of customers to pay a premium for them.

It doesn't really matter that much to me, as I am comped and feel like I will take what they give me LOL it was just a surprise that they are doing this. There's been alot of times I've gone into smoking rooms and there are burns on the carpet and furniture, so I see the positives. At the same time, I think some people will probably go elsewhere. The MGM is huge, so it would've been nice to at least have the choice....I think that's what some people will think.

I just got a notice from MGM Mirage about Luxor:

I've asked about the other properties and will let you know when I hear back.

That was fast! Luxor is the only property currently scheduled to have all rooms go non-smoking. MGM Grand is next, but they don't have an "official" date yet.
