    My Trip Report

First trip report I've done, so bear with me. Pretty long...

Back in February, I decided to purchase a Saturday based season ticket plan to my Detroit Tigers baseball club. 15 games with 11 being Saturday's. The other 4 on random weekdays I can't make with my work schedule and living two hours from Detroit. Great seats in the right field corner, aisle. Two tickets so I can take a friend or family member along. Been great so far, other than the fact that I'm 1-5 so far (Mike Pelfrey for 4 starts and Anibal Sanchez for 2, for my baseball fans). Out of the 6 games, we've made our way to MGM after 4 times now with various results.

First time was with an old college buddy and some of his friends from the U.P. in Michigan. They screwed around some lowball slots for a few. I played roulette after they were done at a $15 table that eventually bumped up to $20. Lost pretty quickly. Highlight was playing with Reggie Bullock of the Detroit Pistons basketball team.

Second time was with one of my oldest friends from home. I played craps only and ended up turning a $100 buy in into a $273 cash out playing the don't pass exclusively (other than when shooting, of course... and I was a hot shooter! Of course a few ill-advised field bets that I'm a sucker for playing lol). $15 min. here too.

Third time with probably my best friend who got married two years ago, so I don't see as much. Played a little bartop VP. Ended up taking a $20 and turning it into $40 with a few full houses and a straight or two. No quad and definitely no royal! Can't remember the exact game. I'm still a VP newb, especially then, so I just picked a game and played. Then went over to craps ($15 min. again... seems to be the standard for a Saturday night). Started out hot, then just completely when to crap (pun intended). Went through $200 in probably an hour before tucking my tail and leaving vowing to never play again (lol).

    Now to this trip....

Tigers vs. Kansas City Royals at 7:00 pm eastern time. My partner in crime for the day (same guy as in the third short story... we'll call him JJ) showed up about 2:00 so we could hang out a bit and throw the football around like we've done for years. Leave my house around 3:15 and head to grab some money from the ATM before departing for Detroit. We're joking around on the way and talking money and career (he's entering final year of college as an ed. major... his wife just finished her first year as a teacher) and I make a joke about babies and such... for him to only reveal that he and his wife are pregnant! SURPRISE!! Turns out they just found out a few days prior and aren't threw the first trimester, so it's a little dicey and I'm one of two people to know. Her mother is the other. Very honored. But very hush-hush lol (so for the one or two people I know in real life on here, no mentioning this part!). Hard to keep that secret from my parents because JJ is like an extended family member to us all. It was at this time though, as I drew cash out of the ATM, I knew karma had to be on our side.

So we get to the ballpark and grab a chicken strip and seasoned fry basket each. Actually was pretty good for ballpark food. Game sucked though. Tigers lost 8-4 in a game that wasn't even as close as the score showed. Nice night though.

So karma definitely has to be on our side now, right? After the game we drive from our parking spot over to the MGM free self parking garage and get a solid spot on the second level. Gets me thinking... I wonder if I could park there for games and either walk or Uber/Lyft over to the ballpark and back. There's no attendant on duty, so I wonder if I could get away with that and save $10-$20. Anyways, we go in to the casino and head out to the casino valet to wait for an Uber to American Coney Island on Lafayette a mile and a half or so away (didn't know exactly where we were going, and it being like 11:00...). Uber ride was great. Dude named Antonio who was hilarious. Definite 5-star rating. Side note... on the receipt I didn't see a place to tip. Can you not tip on Uber through the app? I wanted to since it was such a short trip. I thought I could when I used Lyft in Vegas. Maybe that's a key difference between the two services. Anywho, couple coney dogs and chili cheese fry each and we are set to test our luck! We decide we are feeling brave enough to walk back as we now knew how to get there. Nervous, as you'd expect walking downtown Detroit at about midnight, midnight thirty on a Saturday night. But uneventful other than a hobo seeing JJ's Michigan shirt and yelling "HARBAUGH!! HARBAUGH!!". That was great. Glad he didn't kill us.

I first head to check out the craps tables as I always do. Checking out min's (all $15's as usual, other than two outside tables being $25) and getting a feel for the tables. Head to the other side of the casino to do a little VP (non-bartop, didn't feel like spending the money on alcohol... Vegas comped drinks have spoiled me). Ended up settling for Jack's or Better $0.25x5 (no bonus poker... and I'm still a newb, so I just chose one that looked safe lol). I put in a $20 and am having rough luck. Always falling down but getting enough jack's or better or two pair's to not die. Thankfully this pays off as I hit my first quad since Vegas!

My reaction was way too excited for a simple quad, but I had had such terrible luck, even playing VP simulators on the computer or phone... never any quads! Felt good to get the monkey off my back. That took me up to $30 and I played a couple risky bets and lost and got it back to my original $20. I was happy enough and cashed out even. I like VP, but enjoy it a hell of a lot more when I'm at a sports bar, getting comped drinks, sweating sports bets and making that $20 last a whole lot longer than the time I was at the machine. Oh, can't wait to see you in October, Vegas.

JJ, who's never gambled before, but watched me last time and this time finally decided to put a $20 in to pop the gambling cherry. Jack's or better also (still $0.25x5). First play is a jack's or better to put him back at $20. Second... QUAD!

Again, I'm probably getting over excited, but "KARMA!!" I said as I slapped him on the back! Took him up to $50, which he played down to $40 after getting a bunch of really terrible opening draws. He cashed out then completely content with doubling that $20!

After cashing the tickets, we head over to the tables so I can get a little dice work in. Buy in and start playing the don't pass exclusively along with some field. I'm doing meh until this certain dude started shooting. Hit his first point quickly taking out my don't. I decide, I'm gonna play with this guy. Good choice. This started my run of mind-reading and instead of being an exclusive pass line/don't pass bettor, playing a combo based on my gut feeling of these people. My gut was good. Did a lot of winning. I get around to shooting and I'm hot as hell! I eventually build enough of a supply where I can take $100 worth of chips (what I bought in for) and move those to the side and play with the profit. I keep shooting and I can't miss. Make enough where I start number betting. My superstitious system for when I have the available funds, only applicable when on the pass line... if the point is set at 5, 6 or 8, I place on the other two. 6 or 8 obviously being high probability (relatively) and 5 is a hot number for me going back to Vegas in January. Worked really well for me as I kept hitting at least two number bets before the point was hit or we seven'ed-out. Built a really nice stash to keep taking some risks.

Here's where it really gets fun. Had a (presumably) high roller step up. Big dude who lives in Colorado but is from Michigan. At least three times he bought in for $2K a piece. It was really something seeing the $500 chip stacks going his way and all the crazy misc. bets he was making across the board. Pass line and a lot of roll combinations. So much fun to watch.

Anyway, dice makes its way back to me. JJ has been standing next to me (thankfully not a packed table, so he could watch and learn as I explained things without him being in anyone's way). The high roller asks me if he's ever shot. I said no, his first real time watching. Dude buys him in for $25 and tells him to shoot. Karma! He sets an 8. Great first number. I'm playing with him and set my 5 and 6. He just has the $25 on the PL. Shoots a few times before seven-out. Bummer. High roller says "hey, we tried!". Still a great first experience for him at dice. I get up to shooting again and keep freaking hitting. I'm so hot that the high roller, without my realizing, put some money on me for a combo (might have been yo-eleven). Ended up hitting it and getting like $125 from him! This dude! I seven-out but the next guy I play with does me very well also. I end up doing getting enough of a stash (probably $300 or so total) going that I take $75 from my slot and give it to JJ and tell him to play. If he loses it, oh well. If he still has some by the time we leave, we split 50/50. 50 for my money, 50 for his playing. He decides that's fair and goes to work. No one said anything, so I assume that's OK to do? We both continue hot as he is mimicking what I do for the most part. I'm helping him remember placing odds behind pass line. We don't place odds on don't pass as I'm not 100% sure how that exactly works..? Play for an hour or two this way, pretty much the same. Still hot and winning but it's 4:00 am and I decide it's time to head out. I'm used to being up until 6:00 am with my hours at work, but he's used to waking up at 6:00, so he's mega tired, I'm getting normal tired. We decide to make one last bet on a random shooter on his gut. One field bet for his unborn child! I put $50 down, he puts $15. 10! Woo for unborn JJ Jr.!!!

Both color up. He's at $170 and I'm at $409. Technically that's all from my $100 buy in. So in total value, I turned $100 into $579. Best. Craps. Adventure. Ever.

We split the $170 evenly, $85 per.

Easy enough two hr ride home. He sleeps most of it. Only trouble was a lot of morning fog on the OH Turnpike. But no biggie. Even heard one of my favorite songs I hadn't heard in a while! Great way to cap off a great Saturday with a great friend.

    FINAL TALLY:

Video poker: Bought in for $20, cashed out $20. EVEN.
Craps: Bought in for $100, cashed out at $409 (technically $579, but not all claimed by me). Add $85 for 50/50 split of the $170. +$494
    Parking: $30
Ballpark chicken, fries and large diet Mountain Dew: $18
Two Coney Dogs, Chili Cheese Fry and water at American Coney Island: $9 (definitely great value)
    Gas: $30

    TOTAL: +$407

    KARMA!!!

Great report! After seeing your ballpark pic, I got to thinking...I would love to do a ballpark tour some summer. I've only been to the old Metrodome and to Target Field.
Congrats to you and JJ for some good times!

I play craps, OH usually does not but if its not a full table and they come up I too sometimes give $ to play. Its fine.

When you play the wrong side, the Dont Pass its called laying odds (opposed to taking odds when playing pass) laying odds against a 4 or 10 pays 1 to 2, against a 5 or 9 pays 2 to 3, and against a 6 or 8 pays 5 to 6. The amount you are allowed is the same mulitplier used on taking odds, ie 5x odds you can bet up to an amount that would win no more then 5x your Dont bet.

James... about $12-1300 for 15 games, two tickets.

Great seats. I made sure they were aisle seats. I'm a bit of a bigger dude, so having the extra leg room is such a great way for me to feel more comfortable. Cramming in to a small space with people on either side is just unpleasant for me and can ruin the experience.

I'm the same. Would love to do that. Thought about doing that before I bought my Tigers plan. Thought about taking a week off work and trying to hit Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and the Chicago's. Would love to tour the east coast stadiums sometime. Wrigley is a must though before I die.

Nice report, I used to live in the Detroit area and really miss seeing the Tigers live 10-20 times a year as well as easy access to the 4 casinos (Greektown, MGM, Motorcity & Caesars over in Windsor). As far as parking is concerned at MGM, it was never an issue for me several years ago, used to do it all the time and just walk to Comerica Park.
