My wife and I are getting away to Vegas this July Mon-Thurs.

I am picking the MGM because we will spend most of our morning and day by the pool. Any thoughts on newer hotels with better pools? My thought is that the Lazy river and optional lounge pools give the MGM a serious edge over every other hotel on the strip. I did look at Mandalay Bay..but the YouTube videos made it look like very overcrowded with children compared to the MGM Grand.

Oh MGM is just as crowded.

Not children as much as college kids with their yard long drinks standing in the lazy river blocking the entire path.

"Best pool" is very subjective. Most of the "best pools" are packed in the summer. Whichever one you choose plan to get there early unless you are renting a cabana or daybed.

If your getting a cabana, MGM is hard to beat because the cost is a food and beverage minimum. But overall pool experience at Mandalay Bay is hard to beat - regular pools, wave pool, lazy river, sandy beach, adults only (Moorea Beach Club), party pool (Daylight).

good point. hopefully midweek is less crowded.

Does anyone wake up early and "save" pool chairs with towels?

If you're looking to save a couple chairs you should be fine, if you're looking to save a bunch it could get dicey. But Mon-Thurs will certainly be less crowded than Fri-Sun

Thanks. 2 Chairs will be all! I would prefer the MGM to set aside some chairs and charge for them. I would feel less guilty about "saving" chairs at 7a.m. Plus I wouldn't have to worry about leaving my chair mid-day to donate money to the MGM.

I really enjoyed the pool in the mornings, I also stayed there last year because of the pool. However it gets really crowded in the afternoon. The lazy river is nuts in the afternoon, the only time you can enjoy it is when it opens. The lazy river opens later near 10-11 am I think. The other sections open at 8am or so but I remember being out there earlier. I would grab breakfast and enjoy it on the chairs by the pool in the mornings.

Wow! Great info! That will give more time for the Tylenol and pedialyte to kick in!

I think the pool area at MGM is outstanding and it's very popular... you'll enjoy it.

Personally, (SURPRISE) I enjoy the pool complex at the Hard Rock, but of course the first thing most folks scream is NO REHAB!!!! The Nirvana pool (closest to the HRH Tower) is not even close to the ReHab experience, which is in two-(2) other pools on the other side of the complex. It's the first picture on the link (below). Good music, swim-up gaming, bar-area under a covered-area that looks up into a plunge pool above, and a good mix of people (very, very few children).

I like the Mgm pool area and its very good for a 4 star hotel but its hardly the best on the strip imo. I find the Wynncore pool complex very hard to beat in terms of luxury and atmosphere. Their euro section is just outstanding at both properties even though EncoreĀ“s side is my personal favourite. If you are going with kids however i agree that MB or Mgm would be better.

Not a recommendation because I have not stayed at Delano so I have no opinion.

Delano(mandalay Bay) is to have its OWN private pool set to open in 2015.

Under The Sun. Delano Las Vegas will feature its own private pool just steps from the sand and surf of Mandalay Bay Beach and wave pool. Embracing the laid-back South Beach lifestyle, Delano Beach Club will offer guests an exclusive locale to relax in the sun and is scheduled to open in 2015.

Maybe I don't quite understand this, but I would think this would cut down on a lot of kids and since it is a NEW hotel maybe the party crowd has not found it yet.

Back in my days at MGM, I hated the pools because the brat kids would be out in force and their parents or guardians were non-existent. The brats ran wild. That was when Vegas was trying to be family friendly though. Then, Vegas switched back to Sin City which is my kind of Vegas.

Did this change recently? Admittedly it's been two years since I've been at MGM but in years past there was always one pool open at 7, the others at 9, and the Lazy River at 10 (there'd be a line queued at the LR entrance by 9:45).

I can't say it's the best on the strip, but I can say I love the MGM pool area. In particular the lazy river. Always a great time there!

I wonder if they changed their hours. I've always found the Lazy River to be open at 10am. And while the adult pool didn't open until 9am, some of the others were open before 8am.

I've found the pool complex to be one of the better ones on the strip.

How does the mandalay Bay lazy river compare to the MGM Grand? In photos it seems smaller.

My favourite Vegas pool isn't at one of the new hotels....I may be in the minority here but I love the Tropicana pool. I enjoy the music they play, cabana and day bed rentals don't break the bank, and the landscaping and grounds are beautiful. I feel like I'm at a Caribbean resort at the Trop pool vs a pool in Vegas. Love the poolside villas for a "resort getaway". Feels like two vacations - Vegas casino holiday and when poolside tropical resort vacation.

The change in hours is good news if you want to use the lazy river. It did open at 10 last year and it was totally packed by 12-1. Now you got a good 3 hours to enjoy it before everyone makes there way down to the pool area.
