To begin with I was planning to take my wife to Vegas for a nice weekend and see the Eagles. Of course plans never seem to work out the way you want and you have to change them. My wife was unable to make the trip so I call my mother and asked her if she wanted to go. I think she packed that night and we were still 10 days out. Because I wanted to explore the Freemont street area I decided to add a couple days to the trip. Wed. 3/20 : getting mom to vegas I show up at to pick up my mom 9am Wednesday morning, she opens the garage door and says “how about we take my new car”. I laugh, what is a 73 year old woman doing with a new Camaro? I transfer my luggage to her car and we start our 336 mile trek to The D. The drive was uneventful and we arrived in excellent time, (that car corners great at 95). Check in at the D was very smooth and I decided to take a room on the top floor to help dissipate some of the noise from Freemont Street. I was pleasantly surprised with the room. The only complaint I had was they took a shortcut and painted the bathtubs and it was peeling off. We unpacked and headed down to the casino level to check things out. We signed up for our new D Cards and made our first stop at the Long Bar. We slipped 20 in ordered a drink and started punching buttons. Wow the machines at the long bar are tight. I was having trouble even hitting a full house, plenty of 3OK teases though. We spent about 45 minutes at the long bar and decided to explore some more. We worked our way down to the GN so I could show her the gold vending machine and the “big gold nugget”. We walked by the pool and enjoyed all the sights inside the nugget. We stopped and watched Lady GoGo for a few minutes and then headed on down to the MSS for diner. Mom wanted a buffet, so I decided to get it out of the way first thing. On our way to the MMS I witnessed a homeless guy assist a woman in a wheel chair across the street. I stopped and gave him $10.00 as you don’t see gestures like that very often anymore, plus it always helps appease the gambling gods. I have to say the MSS Buffet is one of the best around. Now that I am in a FOOD coma it is time for a drink and to play some serious VP. We found open spots in the center of the Boar’s Head Bar. My machine warmed up quickly and started spitting out quads. I hit 2 in 8 spins (I love bonus deluxe). Mom’s machine was cold, after 30 minutes she was ready to find a new place to try her luck. I cashed out and headed to the cage to cash in my $4.00 in scratchers. We head out and tour through Binion’s and The Freemont and made our way back to the D to visit the vintage casino and the View Bar. We stop at the Wheel of fortune game, we both insert $20.00, I cash out $120 and Mom whiffs again, she is starting to call me names now. We found a couple spots at the bar, insert $$ and more name calling ensues. My gift to the gods was helping with the quads but I just could not find the elusive AAAA. Mom just kept feeding the machine and was just on a bad run so far. About 10:30 we decided to call it a night. Day 2: More Downtown and museums We woke up around 7am, fiddled around for an hour and made it our way down for some coffee. We were not even close to wanting food as we were still recovering from the buffet last night. We had a couple cups of coffee and started our walk to the Pawn Stars shop. We had a nice walk down to the shop and arrived around 9:30. Perfect timing, No line, we walked right in the door and there were less than 25 people inside. We spent about 30 minutes looking around and then there was an announcement that they would be clearing the store for filming. We took a couple more minutes and headed back downtown. On our walk back Mom decided we needed to stop at the BOA so she could get more cash. Next stop El Co so she can play Roulette. We make our way over to the El Co and find a spot at the roulette table. Mom starts scattering chips around the table and I pull from my VMB research and Play 17, 20 plus neighbors. (20, 32, 7, 17, 5) thanks Nate and Beeejay. $2.50 on each number 5 spins, I start calling people names (Nate and Beeejay). Spin # six, Nothing (I hate those F@#%ing guys). Then wait for it, is there redemption, YESSS next three rolls 32, 5, 17. Those guys are my heroes !!! I wait two more spins for the 20 to hit but no luck. Mom is broke again and I color up, leave a nice tip and hit the cage for my $250.00. On the way out the door we decided to hit a couple VP machines and after 10 minutes I found 4 eights to add to my haul. We decide to head for the Mob Museum. We spent over 3-1/2 hours in the mob museum. I really enjoyed the entire experience and would recommend it to anyone. Plus, an old gangster kind of hit on mom so she was flattered. After the mob museum we worked our way back to The D. We had a late lunch at the café, and we went up to the room so mom could rest. I freshened up and headed down to the long bar to watch the Mizzu game. Well neither Muzzu or the VP at the long bar paid off. But I had some laughs and a few drinks. Mom joined me after her rest and we headed over to the 4 Queens for some VP redemption. We find a couple machines at the four queens and I proceed to hit quads, run it down and hit again run it down repeat. Mom finally got on a roll and hit a couple quads to keep her going. We recirculated money for a few hours and hit the room at about midnight. Still to come - Strat, Reo, Luxor check in - Meeting up with the virgins - Steel Panther and bottle service.
