Looking to stay one night downtown for my MM trip and want to stay at one of these two because of their no resort fee policy. Love playing vp at boars head and like 777. The new sports bar at the Cal seems nice and I'd like to try out the red wood grill there. Any advice on which one to go with? Are rooms nicer at one? Can I charge food to the room at both properties while staying at one? Will play at one count towards the one I'm staying at or should I plan on playing at the one where I'm staying? Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

I understand from the members here that you tell the host when reviewing that you played at both properties or all 3 if you include Fremont That way they access beyond their property alone. Others will chime in I am sure.

I have stayed at MSS twice recently and really enjoy their rooms. They are decent sized, and have 2 easy chairs with a table so that I don't have to sit on the bed. There is a frig. Altho there is traffic and train noise, it did not interfere with sleeping (and I am a light sleeper). Elevators are quick, and everyone is very friendly.
I'm sure you will hear from others re: the Cal rooms

I got for MM pretty much every year. I like MSS. You really can't go wrong with either. It's like one big hotel since they are connected via skywalk.

Yeh. Pretty much about the same. Think of both of them as 1 hotel with 2 casinos. Cal is closer to Fremont street, by a couple minute walk. MSS rooms are a little bigger, but for 1 night, it really doesn't matter. MSS odd rooms are away from interstate. Lower number are farther from tracks. xx01 and xx02 rooms on each floor have new tub length walk in showers (tubs taken out), Cal rooms in west wing are larger, but east wing is closer to Fremont street.all Cal and MSS rooms have fridges. Yes play will count across the downtown casinos. See host.

I like the rooms in the Cal west tower best. The bathrooms are fully enclosed, inside they contain the tub/shower, toilet and vanity. At MSS the bathrooms is split into 2 parts, one "room" contains the tub/shower and toilet and the other area contains the vanity. The standard room at the Cal also has a table with 2 chairs so isn't much different than MSS.

If I had an option I would rather stay at the Cal. Parking lot is connected to the hotel so you don't have to go outside or get wet walking from the parking structure to the hotel. The walk to your room isn't as far as at MSS, especially if you are coming from the FSE. At MSS you have to walk all the way to the back of the hotel, take the elevator and then walk the corridor back to your room. For me I find it easy at the Cal to get to my room. The noise from the trains or freeway isn't as loud at the Cal as at MSS (IMHO). Unlike other posters, if you have a MSS room near the tracks it may bother you if you are a light sleeper.

But I don't think you will go wrong with either hotel, at MSS just ask for a room facing south so you don't encounter the noise from the freeway. In the Cal west tower, ask for a room facing west so you get some view. I wouldn't recommend an inside room at the Cal, you are facing either the east or west tower so no view other than the rooms in the other wing.

For me my first choice for downtown is the Cal and the second choice is MSS so both places aren't much different.

Appreciate all the responses. Someone mentioned some rooms at MSS having updated showers/tub? Is that ongoing and likely to be finished by March? Also, in my BConnected account, MSS is designated my home casino. Does that mean anything? Thanks again for all the info.

If MSS is your home casino, then any offer you receive from the three Boyd properties downtown will come from MSS. Changing it to The Cal or Fremont will move your offers to that casino.

If your home casino is from any other Boyd joint, I am not sure which of the Downtown three will send you a mailer, but I'm pretty sure you'll only get it from one of them.

Last week I was in MSS room #921 and I had a remodeled walk-in shower in place of the tub.

That sounds good. I hope that the shower is completely enclosed or has a shower curtain and not the half glass partition like some of the other hotels. You know the type, water still comes out on the floor because they don't have a door or curtain to keep the splashes inside the shower enclosure.

lol...no. I got it wrong. I had a tub with a 'bowed' shower bar in room 921. The tub that was replaced with a nice walk-in shower was in a Bally's Jubilee room. Geeze, I stay in too many damn hotels when I go to Vegas!

Ha ha, no, maybe getting older and forgetful. :goofy:

The tub with the bowed shower bar is standard at the Cal and MSS. I liked it so much I picked up one for my home.

Only rooms ending in xx01 and xx02 have had the tubs taken out and replaced with full tub length walk in showers with glass sliding doors(big enough for 2). Floors 3-16 or17. Total 28 or 30 rooms. No mention of if they were going to do more.

I was in 1501 at MSS last week... walk in shower with very high shower head... I'm 6' 2" and it was above the top of my head... I would estimate it had room for 4 comfortably?

    That's a vote for MSS.

MSS feels like home for us, but we haven't stayed at Cal. You can charge meals to your MSS room when eating at Red Wood Grill and the coffee shop.

Anyone know if the comps are easier to get at one place vs the other?

bout the same. Depends on your home property which one you get. Many are interchangeable with host. I am MSS but host (I don't have one) said call and she will change to Cal if I want, for rooms. Some of my offers for slot tourneys and VP tourneys are good for either.
