I was just wondering if anyone had done their free cruise yet - and what your feedback was. I am taking my cruise in 3 weeks.

One question I had is where you get your free drinks. Is this only in the casino - how exactly does it work. Do they give you drink tickets - or do you just order 10 drinks and they take them off the bill.

Any other tips/feedback would be appreciated.

I would call them and ask about the drinks. whatever info you get here is going to be secondhand and less reliable.

Assuming this is Royal Caribbean you are talking about, my guess would be its drink tickets, which are only good at the casino bar (but its not like you couldn't get one and take it with you to your room/pool/show).

At least thats how it works with Club Royale (RCCL's VIP program, which i got into on my last cruise in May).

Yup. Went on mine in May out of Tampa on the Jewel of the Seas 5 night. Nice cruise and ship, but more geared to an older crowd. First time on RCI so I'm glad I tried it. They have their loyal followers, but I much prefer NCL. Better system for gaming. Craps are one time odds, so unplayable. VP had to get a manual pay for anything CASHED OUT $250 or over. This got old fast and gave up on VP as I usually play $1 and up. No bac on the ship. Had some 3 card and crazy and roulette, all of which I don't play. Of course, they had 3 or 4 tables of BJ. Ships will be somewhat different in variety. Not sure which you are going on.

They give you drink cards, which the bartenders / servers will punch a hole in when you order one. I played a good amount and spent a lot of time chatting with the host. If you play a lot, you can ask for another one, or if you tend to tip the bartenders well (some don't tip at all), they will remember you and tend to either not punch a hole or simply say "this is on me". However, that said, it does depend on what type of drink you get. I did find it was harder for the bar staff to ignore the premium drinks.

Comps on the RCI ships are null for current cruise. My GF and I spent lots of time and money in the casino and got NOTHING off the final bill. This was unheard of for us as we always get our $500-$1k room bill comped on the NCL ships. Our play was similar. Anyways, not rushing to go back to RCI, but have two penthouse suites fully comped on NCL in the next 8 months which I'm looking forward to.

Anything else you'd like to know just ask.

I love linking to an article in Harper's any time I see the word cruise on internet forums.

If you have a spare hour (or two, I'm a slow reader), David Foster Wallace's A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again - released by Harpers as "Shipping Out" is one of the funniest things I've ever read.

I want to go on a cruise but I get seasick. The last time I went on a fishing trip with my friends, I puked in the toilet that wouldn't flush... the horror I left behind. :(
