    My Trip Report

Flew out to Vegas Wed 7/3 on Hawaiian Air. Hawaiian uses the Airbus 330 which has two front doors. The main cabin starts from row 14. Rows 11-13 are in a separate cabin directly behind first class. I try to get these seats as it’s quieter and has a feeling of exclusivity. I have 12B.

While waiting to turn onto the reef runway for take-off, we stop and get to watch 3 F-22 Raptors from the Hawaii National Guard take off for their daily patrol. Wow… the roar of those engines are something.

Now I know that Vegas is still in its heat wave. The blast of heat upon exiting the airport is what I expected. But what I didn’t expect is that it wasn’t dry heat. By Thursday the humidity had gone up. I had condensation on my water glass, water rings on the table, sweat running down my arms, and this is still in 110+ temps.

By Monday 7/8 there was a flash flood warning in parts of Clark County and a dealer said it rained at 8/9 am that morning in downtown. I noticed a couple of small water puddles that didn’t evaporate when I passed them later that day.

Gambling wise nothing much to report. Played a lot of Blackjack. Biggest hand at Golden Nugget was dealt 9,9 with dealers 3. Split the 9s, get a 2 so double up. 2nd 9, get another 9 so split that one. Get a 10 so stand on that hand. 3rd 9, get a 2 so double up that hand. Dealer makes an 18. Turns up the first face down card – a 10! Sweet! Turns up the 2nd face down card – another 10! Got really lucky on that hand. $75 bet (x5) results in $750 on the table, a $375 win.

    Another hand was being dealt 9,9 with dealers 6, splitting them, getting another 9 – splitting that one, then 10, 10 and 10. 19 on 3 hands, dealer turns a 5. Oh-oh 11… then a 3 - 14, then a 2 - 16 then a face card to bust. Won $225 on that hand.

My brother accompanied me the first few days and had driven his car to Vegas. We decided to go to M casino and he wasn’t paying attention and drove past the off ramp. Since we’re going to have to find the next off ramp, we decide to check out the Gold Strike in Jean.

Considering that this hotel/casino is in the middle of nowhere, there a fair number of people playing. One neat thing is that there is a section in the casino where there are billiard tables.

After M, we end up at the MGM Grand. I walk to the Lion Share machine and find that no one is there. This is the first time in 5 attempts to play this slot machine that no one is playing and no one waiting to play! Put my $100 in and first spin is bar – bar – bar. $30. Now if this happens on any other machine, I would immediately cash out and take my win. But as everyone knows, this machine is hand pay only. I’m not going to wait for an attendant so I decided to play on to win that $2,313,336.41. After 20 minutes I am bored. I guess since I am a table player, I do not have the patience to just sit there and press the button, press the button, press the button. I keep getting small wins – up to $130, down to $40, up to $125, down to $50, up to $140… Eventually I play it all out and yes, the Lion Share machine is still safe for you to win.

While at the MGM, I played a little $10 6-deck Blackjack while I wait for my brother to finish his Craps play. Two young guys sit on either side of me. One knows how to play, the other not so much. The one who knows how to play helps his buddy out for a short time then gives him up. I coach him a bit and lucky for him he starts to win some money. Now have a buddy for life – he wants to play wherever I play, he tells me I should go “clubbing” with him and his buddies. I politely decline his offer, I’m old enough to be his father and way past the clubbing scene (actually never did it anyway). He and his buddy are hammered and you know this is the alcohol talking and its only 2pm! I end my session and he is disappointed that I’m leaving. Again asks about “clubbing” and I leave while having a good chuckle.

    More later…

    Hey Joe

Its that progressive slot machine in the MGM grand that's the last one of its kind. Rumor has it that whoever hits it will also win the machine as they all have been retired. Also the word is you get paid all at once, not over xx years.

The existing thread on the progressive: http://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64069&highlight=share

Ever had car trouble while in Vegas?

On Friday my brother’s car decided that it would be a good time to slip the transmission while reversing. :nono: This actually happened Thursday night as he was parking the car but when it happened again Friday, the “Check Engine” light came on and stayed on. Now he’s worried about driving back home to Albuquerque on Saturday so we gotta get this checked out today.

Call the local dealership and it’s a known problem with a factory repair bulletin. How long to repair? A few hours. Good. Actually it takes them until 4pm but at least it’s still the same day. My brother dodges that bullet. :evillaugh

Went to the Plaza to try their $100 loss rebate offer. You get half of the loss rebate the next day then the second half the following day. You gotta watch out on this one. Only certain machines are eligible for using the rebate. :nono: So after you lose your $$, you get to play machines you probably never heard of. I found Cash Wizard – at least I’ve seen that one around and I cashed out just under $50 using the rebate.

I did get a card from Plaza. They match the Tier of other cards so I got the ACE! Not sure what that gets me yet (we’ll see what kinds of offers come in the future)… I did give them some Blackjack play on their $25 table. Decent rules but there is more fun in holding the cards. I really do not enjoy playing the game when it is dealt face-up on the table. And they also deal your double down cards face-up. I enjoy the suspense when you don’t know the cards.

Speaking of which – Red Rocks is testing the face-up play on double deck games. I had the unfortunate luck of being on a table where after a couple of hands, the pit boss reminded the dealer that on this table, the cards should be dealt face-up. Evidently they are testing this on one table to see what kind of numbers they get in hands per minute/hour and if they like it, it will be expanded to all the pitch games. I left and told the pit boss that I don’t like it, why I don’t like it and that he should relay my comments to his higher ups. The 2 other players on the table left as well.

As I reported in another thread, the shortcut through Las Vegas Club is no more. I was a good walk through cool AC during the summer with just a short walk across Ogden to the CAL. But alas, no more. Part of the wall was up Wednesday evening and I still could walk through there. But by Friday evening, the wall was complete. Now have to enter/exit through the center door onto Main Street. It’s still a short cut, but not as convenient as before. (At least for now until they decide to block off that door since it goes through an empty room.)

Did some other things besides gambling. Went to see the movie “The Heat” while we were waiting for the car. Very funny, lots of swearing. :nono:

Went to the America concert at the Cannery as well. They played a lot of their songs from the 70’s and early 80’s. Bad thing though is the location of the concert. At the Cannery Hotel & Casino, their arena is partially indoors, mostly outdoors. It was early evening and the sun was setting so it was a little cooler. The stage and the VIP seating are in the building (and with AC) while the tables and bleacher seats are outdoors. So sitting outside for a couple of hours in 106 degree temps is not exactly my idea of a good time. A very good concert though… I would do it again.

I decided to follow BeeJay’s comp yourself plan. I already had comped rooms for 4 nights at MSS and 2 at Suncoast but I wanted someone to pay for my 2-day car rental, gas, 6 days of food, bottled water, snacks and the concert ticket. So everyday while playing Blackjack, I took $25 from a winning bet and said that pays for the day’s food. I take $25 from another winning bet and that goes into my car fund. While at the Cannery I won $425 from a $100 buy in so that more than paid for my concert ticket (which was only $20).

So I come home with two envelopes with $150 each which pays for the car rental, gas and food. Overall gambling fund is a loss of $600 which is great for 6 days playing $50/$75 hands of Blackjack. So a net loss of $300 – a win in my book.

    $1 Soda.jpg

A rare find. 20oz bottle soda for $1.00. And at a car dealership!

    Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the report. I wonder if you can play pool at Gold Strike or if they're just for display like at MSS.

Whew, glad your brother was able to get his car fixed....would not be pleasant to break down in the desert in July! A small loss is a win in Vegas!
