I had a Samsonite (not spinner). After a few years the wheels split and the zipper and seams started to break. I probably used the suitcase for about 18 trips to japan, vegas, san fran and florida (had it for about 8 years) so I think I got my money's worth on it, esp when I picked it up at Ross for $45. After that one I picked up a spinner (Samsonite) but the suitcase and seams started splitting after 1 year. The suitcase was a little heavy, probably over 11 lbs so I just went to Ross again and picked up another suitcase for around $50 (donated the suitcase to goodwill for the tax break). This one weighed only 7.5 lbs so I could carry a little more in it. Unfortunately since it was a lightweight suitcase it doesn't hold up to wear and tear that well but I already used it for 3 trips last year and I expect it to last about 5 years.

I can do all that with my $100 carry on or checked baggage. Even after treating it rather badly for a couple of years. I used to think I needed expensive luggage but my mind has changed.

Yeh, cheap stuff is never going to last but I can't see any need to spend more than $100 a piece on luggage, unless it's to make sure other people know you have.

I think you would be hard pressed to find well functioning spinner luggage for $100. It may not make much difference for carry on size since the max weight would be 20lbs. For a larger piece for extended travel where luggage can max out at 50 lbs, for me, noting beats a Tumi bag. Would I pay $1000 for it......not likely. I was happy to buy it with points I had accumulated at GGWU.
As far as making sure other people know you have it.....that may be true for those travelling with Louis Vuitton luggage. For me, it's about functionality.

I have an older version of this one (as well as a small and large). Never let me down once, despite taking a few kickings.

Weighs about 6 pounds but the lightest is only 3 pounds and that little difference doesn't bother me. They glide perfectly when rammed full as well.

I have no problem with brand loyalty and if I traveled as much now as I used to I would probably have splurged for Tumi because they are indeed awesome.

There are a couple things I am blindly loyal to when it comes to brands...Nike, Oakley and Ford

I just bought a really nice Tumi rolling garment bag with the spinner wheels... my first time with these wheels. They seem light-weight, but plenty heavy duty enough to last. Damn bag has a mind of its own with rolling though. I have a helluva time keeping it going straight! I need lessons!

Since OP is checking his luggage it doesn't matter about size. I gave up my spinner carry-on because the wheels were included in the length. It was a small Delsey that moved easily. It ran fine on the four spinners, I just pulled it on two. You'll see lots of folks doing this at the airport.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Still not sold on the durability of the spinners vs. the inline rollers but I decided to ante up and get a big Tumi spinner.

Add me to the Samsonite team. I've bought a large and smaller one at Costco a few years back for around $300 (I think) and never had an issue with it. An idea of the use, I've done about 90 flights since I got them; short haul and long haul.
Usually my bags crap out much sooner than this so hopefully I haven't jinxed it.

I've never had a spinner wheel break off on me but I have seen others dragging their bags through the airport without a busted off wheel... The issue I have more commonly is a zipper seam will slip or the zipper does that annoying thing where it opens on both sides and you can't get it lined up again properly...

I find that a heavy bag on a rough surface puts much less wrist strain on me when pulled on two than glided on four wheels. I tend to alternate between 2 and 4 wheel use and haven't had any problems.

Sorry I wasn't clear but I agree with you. The new Travelpro we bought at Macy's was originally $520 but we purchased it on sale and they allow you to stack discounts so it ended up costing us around $130. It makes you wonder what the markup is allowing us to walk out paying that little.

i have the TUMI and a samsonite, both gifts from harrahs, I use the tumi for long trips as its nice size, the samsonite is good for a 2-3 day trip...as far as sticking out, i guess if someone can see the 1"x3" "tumi" by the handle or knows what the circle T means then yea

I sure agree with this... the Reno/Tahoe Parking garage has a seriously rough paved surface and it's by far easier to just pull the bag!

heres mine, nothing fancy to stick out and the hard case makes it nice for anything fragile when the airlines are litterally throwing your stuff around

I have spinners from Vera Bradley. Solid Black (so my husband doesn't have to carry a flowery bag) and mine is purple paisley. It holds up well

Good choice. I have a Tumi hard side I bought in 2010. Lots of scuff marks but in perfect condition. I also have many of their other travel pieces; tote, shoe bags, cosmetics bag, packing cubes, etc. They seem to last forever. I also know of someone who had a crack in theirs years after purchase and they repaired it free. The Tumi website has good sales of you take last years styles or colors. My carry on is a Delsey. I chose that due to a padded area for my pc/iPad. I had a few problems with it, but it's still rolling.

Spinners are great, I make fun of my friends who do not have them lol. I am more worried about my handle breaking than the wheels. But I bought a cheapo on black friday.
