When I was in Vegas last September, my buddy and I decided to wander up to the north strip (we stayed at Bally's). He'd never been to Vegas before, and I wanted to show him a little touch of how the town used to be when I first started going out there (1993 or so).

I have a fondness in my heart for lounge acts. I like that it's free, and I respect that the talent is usually slightly above average. After all, it's not exactly easy to get a temporary or standing gig on the Strip, so even this backing band and female vocalist were pretty decent in the grand scheme of things. We enjoyed fascinating people watching, and an upbeat if not quite hip crowd (hey, it's the Riv).

We only stayed for about 30 minutes, but I have to say we really enjoyed the scene. I know, I know...lounges are cheesy 70's relics. I get it. But it really was a nice escape from what I think is an increasingly upscale and pricey Strip experience. Just a nice laid back night with some unassuming folks.

Do any of you have a soft spot for places like that?

We were staying at the Venetian a few years ago and they had this fabulous Motown band playing in one of the lounges. We walked by the lounge and decided to go in for a couple songs and we ended staying for well over an hour. MB always always has a band playing in the evening. Imagine Dragons was at one time a house band at MB.
