    My Trip Report

I’ve been going to Vegas for 40 years now and I know I’ve had more losing trips than winners, but this trip was just a total beat down. The pain started on Saturday and didn’t end until we left on Wednesday afternoon. I usually, play dollar, DDB, video poker these days. We started out around 5 PM Saturday and I finally quit at 2 AM, which is 4 AM back in the Central Time Zone. ONE FOUR OF KIND THAT ENTIRE TIME!!!

Sunday, Monday & Tuesday just continued on that way. My wife did a little better on VP, but still had a losing trip. For the entire trip, I had nine; yes that’s right, nine four of a kind and one straight flush. Just brutal! One of the 4oak was when I switched from DDB to JOB and you guessed it-3 aces dealt and the 4th one and the kicker on the draw.

When I’m losing at VP, I’ll try and change it up and go back to the crap table. Just another $1,000 beat down over two days. I really wanted to join Beeejay and his crew on Tuesday night at the Golden Gate, but I just couldn’t justify hitting my line of credit for a third time on this trip. Me, being a very weak willed individual, knew if I walked over, I’d be hitting the ATM, because I just can’t stand and watch someone play craps without jumping in the game.

So what did I do when we got home…booked a trip for May 24th.:evillaugh

My wife did hit four straight flushes this trip. I don’t know all the math, but I think it should pay more than 250 credits.

On either Sunday or Monday, someone got a $5,000 scratch card at MSS. I’ve had aces with the kicker a few times in the last several years, but it is now over 3 years since I hit a royal.

That’s about it for the gambling report. The rest is just some misc notes.

We’re not foodies. We had a very nice meal at the Redwood on Monday and also a nice meal at Pasta Pirate on Tuesday. Our normal host was off on Tuesday, so I went to the host desk just to make a reservation for that night for 5 people. Two of my brothers and one sister in law were supposed to join us, but bro & SIL didn’t show. Anywho, the host gave us an additional $150 comp besides our Gold Cards. At the end of the meal our waiter brings over a bottle of wine and says take it along since you didn’t use most of your comp! One breakfast buffet at MSS and a couple of meals at the 777 Brew Pub.

The plan originally was to go to Mon Ami Gabi for lunch on Tuesday and eat out on the patio, but it was in the mid 60s and the wind was blowing 20-30 mph. We passed and just stayed downtown.

Free WiFi: My brother was on the 16th floor with a south facing room (toward the Plaza) and was able to get the new free WiFi in his room. We were in a suite, also on the 16th and all of the suites face north, not even a hint of a signal in our room.

The Vegas Club tore out the front of their casino and put in a gift shop, right on the corner of Fremont and Main St.

I hope it’s worth it because the construction on Fremont St for the new zip line sure is a mess. Henneseys must hate it because right now it has completely blocked the view from their patio.

Our normal routine is to walk from MSS to ElCo, just to stretch the legs. One morning we decided to treat ourselves and have a hot dog at Coney Island Dogs in the front of the D. Waste of money-dogs were grilled, charred and tasted like they had been on the grill for hours. We decided to go inside the D and check out the Long Bar. 9:30 AM and the music was so loud, we just left. Not my kind of music either!

Someone posted lines for NFL week 1 games, so I was trying to find a book that had them. Nothing at the Nugget, Fremont, Cal, ElCo or Plaza. Speaking of the Plaza. The remodeled sports book looks really nice, but the perfume odor in there is overwhelming. My wife thought it smelled like the stuff you sprinkle on the carpets before vacuuming to remove odors.

There have been some comments lately about the panhandlers being more aggressive on Fremont. We walked every morning and never had a problem.

Two board members looked me up at MSS. Morpheus7222 and oldschoolvegas. Old school was staying at MSS so we chatted almost every day. I always enjoy meeting people from VMB.

I guess this is no surprise but the selection of N/A beers in Vegas is really limited. My one brother doesn’t drink and so mostly he was stuck drinking O’douls. He did find Becks & St Pauli at The Cal, but the bartender said they are getting rid of them.

I mentioned the Vegas Club not taking room reservations to a bartender friend at The Cal. She says they did the same thing last summer, then restarted in the fall.

Before retiring, we both worked in the media and know better than to believe the hype, but we fell for it this time. All the talk of TSA & Air Traffic Controller’s furloughs on TV, we got to the airport 3 hours ahead of our return flight. No delay!:poke:

Here is a big THANKS to whoever posted the info about using the alternative route to the C gates!!! There were two people ahead of us at the TSA checkpoint. The trouble is that meant we had almost 3 hours to sit in an airport bar and drink “cheap” drinks.

Never saw this before…a couple brought their dog on the SWA plane w/o a crate and the dog sat in her lap the entire flight. It never made a sound.

I realize the report is a little disjointed, but this trip I didn’t bring the laptop to take notes because thanks to Buddha, I knew I wouldn’t get wifi in my north facing room at MSS without paying $9.99. Screw that!

Thanks for the detailed report, but sorry to hear about the lousy results. At least you'll soon be getting back on the horse that threw ya – I'd be discouraged as hell! See you next month.

Sorry about the loss. But if the gambler's fallacy has taught us anything, your next trip is sure to be a winner!

I loved all of the info!

Can relate to every bit -- including the quad drought (unfortunately!)

Thanks for taking the time to keep us informed!

Those beatings stink, man! But, you obviously aren't letting it bring you down, if you are heading back in a month!!

I will be there on a solo trip myself May 23-28. Maybe we'll bump into each other, and get beat up together?

    Hey Joe ...
Sorry to read about your bad run at DDB. That's the very reason that we stick to 9/6 JOB and 8/5 Bonus, as DDB can be very volatile when those quads don't show up. I was hoping you would hit that $5000 scratch card, since it was still available when we left MSS on the 16th.

Yeah, Fremont St. is a mess with those construction tarps around the Zip-Line, and also between the LVC and the GG. Looked like they were going to put some type of fountain in there ???? I'm with you on "The D" property ... we walked through it once, and walked back out. The sound level was waaaayyy beyond our tolerances. AND, I for one am upset that the Zip-Line was ever allowed to be installed on Fremont St. It's been a big nuisance to many of the people just walking around, trying to see the good parts of the FSE.

If you have a word processor program in your laptop, you could still take trip notes without the internet. I'm also against paying the $9.99/day for the MSS signal ... BUT, you are popping $5 a hand into that $1 - DDB, and using your Gold Card for meals ... you could certainly just buy into the wi-fi on an "every-other-day" buy-in, so you could check email and the VMB site. :poke:

    Hey Joe!

Sorry we didn't get to meet you but totally understand and I've been there. I've been playing a lot of $1 DDB at Aria this trip and that thing is a cruel mistress. It's so easy to blow through $1,000 without hitting shit.

Glad your climbing back on in May. I'm big on the bonus deluxe these days as a compromise between JOB and DDB. I mean if your not hitting quads your still screwed, but it is halfway in between the extremes on variance.

Once you state playing that its hard to go back to DDB. For example at the VMB meet at Mirage I hit two quads in about 10 hands for $250 each and all I could think about was I just lost $300 by not playing Bonus Deluxe.

I believe Bonus Poker is probably the best game, but I'm sure thats too boring for you as it is for me. Royal Flusher got me started on that Boner Deluxe.

I hear you on the royals, I haven't hit a royal or aces w/kicker since 2011. meanwhile these other jokers are hitting them in droves. Sooooo f'ing frustrating. And like you said mixing in table games doesn't seem to help.

Kudos to you for pulling back and not hitting the ATM, may as well save that for May when your luck may have switched!

Lol, yes I have Office on my laptop, but honestly then it would feel like I was back at WORK!:nono:

Last year on black Friday I picked up a 9" display, DVD player for $50, so that's all we need on the plane for movies and it weighs about a 3rd of the laptop.

Today I'm expecting delivery of an Android 2.3 OS tablet. A 7 inch refurbished unit for $40. I'm just testing to see if it is something I might like.

As I posted before, we are both retired and there is no email that important it can't wait for 5 days and everybody has the number for my dumb phone!:poke:

Granted if the room had free wifi, I'd lug the laptop around, but maybe this tablet might be the answer. Crap, I know nothing about apps, I have a dumb phone, so another education process is upcoming. It is a $40 experiment.

Anybody feel free to suggest some Android apps I should download. After this last trip, preferably free if there is such a thing for useful ones.

there's endless free apps on the Play Store. I've only bought one app in my life and it was for at work (has the calculation of how to measure threads and thread pitch with thread wires. well worth the $2 so I don't have to drag out books and formulas and do it myself)

Tune-In Radio - I found a good classic rock station out of Atlanta. There are the regular commercials though.

MBL At-bat - A good way to follow the daily MBL games. Bovada Mobile has betting lines it's not really an app that you download though.

That's very interesting. I'd like to hear more about this. Did the crew see this and not say anything? We are thinking about traveling with our 4.5# dog in the future and I've ready that having him out of the carrier at any point once on the plane is a HUGE no-no. I'd never travel without a carrier but I know he'd be much less likely to fuss if he was on our lap.

Plus he's such an AWESOME chick magnet :evillaugh! I know the girl dressed like the one that got kicked off the southwest plane would sit with us in a heartbeat if I had him out!

The dog was in plain sight and they didn't have a carrier. I saw them sitting earlier in the concourse. No crate.

    Joe,
I was in town last weekend. Went over to the MSS a couple times and asked a couple of folks at the Boars Head bar if they were named "Joe". None of them were. I did play blackjack late Friday night/Saturday morning there for a couple hours. You bet $150-$200 hand in there and they roll out the red carpet. I enjoyed my time there for sure!

Enjoyed your report, even though a little sad about the gambling. We probably passed you and Mrs. Joe at McCarran, you coming and us leaving. I know this will sound silly, but do you use a fuschia suitcase? If the answer is "no", don't ask me why. If yes, then I saw you! LOL
