During a February trip to Las Vegas, I gathered my own data when it comes to long hauling. I drove between McCarran & a few select points that would indicate fares to popular areas.

The difference in fares shown uses the Las Vegas cab rates of $2.80 per mile, once all the fees for flag drops and McCarran surcharge are paid.

One variable to consider: I don’t know when waiting time kicks in. The waiting rate is quoted as $30.00 per hour. I’m guessing the waiting time starts when the cab has been idle for a certain amount of time, I just don’t know what that time is. The reason I mention it is that on a couple of routes in the city, I did sit at a couple of lights for quite a while which may cause a couple of the city routes to be slightly higher

McCarran to south strip @ Las Vegas Blvd. & Tropicana
    (MGM, NYNY, Excalibur, Tropicana)
Via Tunnel to 215 to 15 to Tropicana exit to LVB: 6.1 miles in 9 minutes
Via McCarran exit up Swenson to Tropicana to LVB: 3.2 miles in 9 minutes
Tunnel adds 2.9 miles and $8.10 to the fare w/ no time saving

McCarran to Flamingo & Valley View area (Rio, Gold Coast, Palms)
Via Tunnel to 215 to 15 to Flamingo exit to Valley View: 7.4 miles in 9 minutes
Via McCarran exit up Swenson to Paradise crossover to Flamingo to Valley View: 4.6 miles in 19 mins.
Via McCarran exit up Swenson to Tropicana to Dean Martin to Hotel Rio Drive to Flamingo to Valley View: 4.4 miles in 13 minutes
Tunnel adds 2.8 miles & $7.80 to the fare on Flamingo route w/ 10 minute time saving
Tunnel adds 3 miles & $8.40 to Dean Martin route w/ 6 minute time saving

McCarran to north strip @ Las Vegas Blvd. & Spring Mountain
(TI, V/P, Wynn, Fashion Show Mall)
Via Tunnel to 215 to 15 to Spring Mountain exit to LVB: 8.2 miles in 10 minutes
Via McCarran exit up Swenson to Paradise crossover to Sands to LVB: 3.4 miles in 10 minutes
Tunnel adds 4.8 miles & $13.50 to the fare w/ no time saving

McCarran to Downtown @ Fremont & Casino Center
(Golden Nugget, Four Queens, Binions, Fremont)
Via Tunnel to 215 to 14 to 95 to Casino Center exit: 12.4 miles in 16 minutes
Via McCarran exit up Swenson to Paradise crossover to Main to Bridger to Casino Center: 6.8 miles in 23 minutes
Tunnel adds 5.6 miles & $15.70 to the fare w/ 7 minute time saving.

There’s the data. It’s up to anyone to figure out if the extra expense is worth the alleged time saving.

Holly crap, that is a lot of information.

I know I have seen what kicks in as idle time. It has something to do with speed being below a certain MPH for a certain number of seconds.

I just spent 15 minutes looking for it, can't find it, sorry.

Found it but it may be dated for it lists $2.40 instead of the current $2.40 + 0.20 fuel surcharge for a total of $2.60 per mile.

20c waiting fee charged every 24 seconds when the cab is moving less than 8-12 MPH.

do most ppl not take the interstate when they cab it to downtown? I don't think i'd want to even bother with regulars streets... an extra $15 dollars, what time of day was the downtown test?

Well, now we know why they want to take the tunnel.

Most of the trips were taken between 12 noon and 2pm on various weekdays. The only exception being the trip from the airport to downtown via the tunnel and freeways was at 6pm. Traffic on I-215 & I-15 at that time was very congested, but moving.

This brings up the fallacy that taking the tunnel is faster. Not necessarily so. Certain parts of the day, I-215 can get very congested and crawl along. The ramp between I-215 & I-15 can be stop & go, as can I-15. On one of my trips up I-15, the Tropicana ramp was backed up for at least half a mile. I think this would've made a trip from the airport to LVB & Tropicana via the tunnel even longer, and more expensive, than to take Swenson up to Tropicana and head west.

Thanks for adding the information about waiting time. I thought the cab had to be at a complete standstill for a certain amount of time before the meter registers any waiting time.

I take the interstate but I still say no tunnel.

Tropicana to I15 to downtown. It might be a few minutes extra but saves ~$8-9.
