Wouldn't you know it, we grab a cab last Friday morning from Cosmo and get long hauled TO the airport. I know enough that when I get a cab from the airport to my hotel, I tell them my requested route. I've never given a second thought about doing so from the casino to the airport. Live and learn, I guess. The cabbie was a mile a minute talker. She immediately asked how many times I've been to Vegas, and I answered 50. She asks if she should take the strip, and I was like, well yeah of course. Then, when she didn't make the left turn at Mgm /Excalibur corner (tropicana?) I had to interrupt her and ask what she was doing. Still talking a mile a minute, "oh, I'm taking you down the strip like you said, we can take the highway for $35 or this way for $26" I was like, WHAT?? Turn around and go back to Tropicana and directly to the airport. Good lord, I haven't seen the "Welcome To Vegas" sign in many years. She tells me she's only been driving a cab for three months. Get to the airport, fare is $19 something. Gave her a twenty and told her she had learned some very bad habits and she was lucky I didn't call the Taxi authority and have her license revoked. Guess we have to be careful on the way home now too..........big sigh.

Actually, I might call this "semi long hauled". She did not take the freeway and tunnel, but did take the long way.

This happened to us this last trip also. I didn't think about telling the driver not to go on the strip because they never did before from Paris, but before I knew it we were waiting for the light to change and down the strip we go! I told him I don't know what you are doing but you better get us to the airport fast and get out of this traffic. I was just waiting for him to say that I was cheap when I paid him!

My first experience with this happened a couple of years ago. From Ballys, Cabbie says Flamingo and Paradise are very backed up and we should take the highway. I said NO and we aren't in that much of a rush. He did take my route (no traffic to speak of) and drove VERY erratically and fast. He got a speeding ticket entering the airport hahah...Karma!

Many times leaving the Rio (Always pre-dawn) the driver takes the freeway..Sometimes I just want to get to the airport asap,so I never speak up.
Last trip with a lot of time to spare I see the driver is ready to enter the freeway and I speak up..I ended up with a Strip ride..Never saw Aria Cosmo before from there..but not the right time...You really can't win.
At that point @ 5am after a week in LV,I'm usually too beat up to argue.Just get me to LAS in one piece..

I may have been long-hauled going to the airport from Gold Coast on my last trip.
Wasn't paying much attention, but I know we took the freeway to Tropicana...drove by the trop & MGM, etc & turned right (on Paradise?)...after that? who knows?
It was my first time taking a cab to terminal 3, so maybe it's just an honestly "longer haul".
But my fare was $20, which seems high from Gold Coast.

Perhaps someone can help me figure this one out.

Seems like forever from now, but the flights are booked, so it counts!

I know that's t bunch of bovine doodoo, especially since a taxi driver showed me the fast way to get from Bally's to the airport, which is Flamingo-Koval-Harmon-Paradise. I'm sure your driver knew that route too, which bypasses Flamingo and Paradise.

Happened to me once before.. Had to go to the int'l terminal and told the cabbie once I got in the car. He decided to go to Terminal 1 (?) and I told him it was the wrong terminal. Once we got the the correct terminal, he had the balls to charge me the full fare. I told him to go f' himself and just gave him a $5 then left. Fortunately, I only had my backpack with me.

I've surrendered, for the past few years my wife and I have used Presidential, and although it costs $100 more round trip, the lack of aggravation, no taxi lines to wait in, especially at the Bellagio on a Sunday morning, and the general awesome experience of cruising in a limo makes it all worth while. Pulling into the B in the limo always gets the attention of the bellman etc. great service right from the start. Been to Vegas maybe 20 times, know my way around so other taxi rides I'll mention to the cabbie if I feel I'm being long hauled. If so not tip and move on.

I can't recall ever being long hauled to the airport but then again I always tell them which way to go. The only time I didn't the guy asked me if we minded if we took the highway. I told him no thanks and he was disappointed. He was a nice guy though - he told me that he always asks and then described how much pressure is put on them by management to run the meters up.

Wow, $100 for limo rides. Inflation! Buddy and I used to go every year and grab a limo ride from and back to the airport for $7 each.

I got taken on the freeway at least once when we stayed at the Stratosphere . Didn't know any better at the time and didn't know the street layout. I'd probably strangle the guy if he tried that on me now.

You were not long hauled from Gold Coast. Just because you get on the freeway doesn't mean your long hauled. He took you the quickest route and probably saved you a couple dollars.

I've taken cabs from both Gold Coast & Rio in the past... the route taken every other time was Flamingo, across the freeway, all the way to Paradise... and the fares have always been less than $20... $13 to $15, if I'm remembering correctly...always ended up tipping up to $20 even. This time, the meter was just over $20.
Perhaps it was higher because it was terminal 3...this was my first time flying out of 3.

Paradise is a big time fare saver going to and from the airport, especially for going to the north strip and downtown.
