Whenever I stay at Silver Sevens, I often take advantage of its close proximity to the UNLV track. Back in January, I found myself there one afternoon running laps.
The only other people present were a young woman and what appeared to be an older training mentor of some sort. They were doing drills by the high jump pit.
I spoke with them briefly, but neither were too talkative. They seemed quite intent on their workout.
It wasn't until I watched the Olympics track and field trials today that I realized who the pair were. It was former NFL QB Randall Cunningham and his daughter Vashti, a high school senior at Bishop Gorman.
Vashti eventually became the first high school girl to jump 6-foot-6 and ended making the Olympic team this past week.
While in Vegas, you never know what you're going to run into.

Fond memories of Randall. He gave it all out on the field. His wife and Vashti's mother is a ballerina.
