And that is just the "legal" overcharges. I can't imagine what the overcharges for long hauls are. Come on Uber!

The credit card thing is the most galling to me. Given the relatively-low fees charged by credit card companies, an extra $3 on every ride is an enormous markup for something that nearly every merchant has figured out how to deal with.

Haven't used uber yet but the last trip from the airport I took has convinced me I should. Told cabbie I was going to the cosmo and he started going towards the freeway. I told him he ways going the wrong way and he took a quick left to get back towards the city streets.

The have abused their market enough, time to go...

The most galling habit these long haulers have is to suddenly "not understand" One moment perfectly fluent in English/American, the next second "no understand"
When these rip off artists are out of work, they will be bleating about how unfair Uber is!

This is what happens when you have a monopoly on all forms of public transportation from the airport.

With Uber and Lyft coming into the picture, along with a rail transport extending to the airport (if it ever actually comes to fruition), the Taxi companies will soon be changing their business model or cease to exist.

More likely they will rip off their remaining customers even more to make up for the smart ones who left.

Here's an idea, how about individual flat rate fares to Hotels. Then I would like to see how quick one could get to their hotel.
    Something's got to change.

DC has a similar system. Charges are flat based on how many zones you traveled.

It sounds like the cab companies are losing power. And I wonder if the fear of money being lost to other parts of the economy will spill over to fees.

Perfect, they should lose power. Having a monopoly got them too comfortable in their practices to rip people off.

Only question, doesn't an uber or lyft driver benefit from long hauling too?

We have the same here in Toronto for airport limos, I bet that they will move passengers as fast as they can to get back for another run.

That actually changed a while back, they're meter-based now. In part because drivers used to play the "How Many Zones Can I Hit?" game whenever possible, and it was awful; the potential for long-hauling was probably even worse than in a metered system. The zone system really only works in an implementation like Miami has coming from the airport, where the only thing that matters is your destination zone (anything other than to/from the airport or the cruise ship port is metered).

I stand corrected, last time I was in DC was like 2002/2003. Interesting about the how many zones hit, figured you go from zone 1-3 that was it.

We've pretty much given up on cabs in Vegas as we don't trust them. We'll probably only use one on our next trip and that'll be to get us back to the airport.
